  • I used to love that show.

  • this music reminds me of wednesday nights in the 1970s, staying up late in a vain attempt to catch sum highlights of the football.

one match in particular i recall was a FA cup replay with everton and aston villa,in the rain on a mud soaked pitch. my dad was also so engrossed as he didnt notice the time, wel past bed time!!! then as you say sky tv hit the overkill button and now football overload reigns supremem

Normal punters cant afford it and the suits rake in the corporate prawn sarnies

  • Great programme. A typical mid-70s line-up would go something like: FA Cup tie (quarter final replay), boxing (John H Stracy, Charlie Magri, Dave "Boy" Green), ice skating (John Curry making the rest look like elephants in hobnails); then highlights of stuff like tennis (Evonne or Chrissie thumping some Brit at the Australian Open), or motorsport (James Hunt in practice) or squash or indoor athletics.

It was on so late it was a treat to be allowed to stay up and watch it (usually in your pjs).

  • @custardaghost brilliant memories mate, we must be the same age as thats how i call it. I remember a boxer, Alan Minter , as i recall he used to always fight Dave Boy-Green....

    btw im 45!!

  • arrg the greyhopund final from wembley

    ohh happy days

when the eastern scum were all behing the wall

  • Great Programme and Great Theme, used to love staying up late to watch it!

  • being allowed to stay up late if man u where on as long as i had cleaned teeth and got pyjamas on

  • Remember always had a very "rushed" feel to it. The football highlights always seemed brief.

  • Superb!

  • Epic. Just f****** epic!!!

  • i always remembered bbc tv greyhound trophy from wimbledon. only time apart from even mightier world of sport youd see the dogs on tv - excellent programme...

  • I would love to know were i can find the BBC's boxing theme from the 80's...it was just awesome...i can't find on youtube....

  • God this is an anthem from the 80's...

  • Epic hahaha

  • when i think of this i just think how great liverpool were back then :(

  • There was a remix of this piece of music which I heard on a jukebox in a Sheffield pub. It was very jazzy and absolutely brilliant, but I've been searching for it for so long it seems as if I must have dreamt it. But it really exists - somewhere !

  • Aaaaah - another classic Tony Hatch recording - love it!

  • lol...I used to force myself to stay awake just to see the football highlights in my bedroom....pre Sky sports & all that Live football. Then strugggle to get up for school the next morning. memories indeed!!

  • Simply one of the best themes ever, & evoking many cosy memories...

  • Brilliant post... BUT came across this while looking for WORLD IN ACTION or was it PANORAMA late 70's intro theme. It was a rock track with wicked drumming on it. 70-80's theme tunes seem to be the best ones.

Bring this back any day... SKY SPORTS IS A RIP OFF over inflated overrated bullshit.

  • You're surely thinking of the Weekend World intro (AKA Nantucket Sleigh Ride)

  • insut07, the track I think that you mean is Nantucket Sleighride by Mountain. The track was used as the theme for a Sunday political show called Weekend World....of course I'm sure you'll have found it by now.

  • Yes, i've found out, thanks though!

  • @insut07 You may well have found what you were looking for after such a time....but in case you have not you need to type in 'Nantucket Sleigh Ride' By Mountain.....then you will be able to remember it all.....sunday afternoons....Brian Waldren....politics....

Where I lived it was squished in between Farming Diary and The Big Match.....

  • David Vine R.I.P.

  • LOL, skiing, boxing, swimming but never the one sport everyone wanted which was football.

  • you and the guy that posted this intro obliviously never watched Sportsnight as it showed lots of football european, internationals, league cup,f a cup, replays etc some boxing but hardly any swimming nevermind skiing!!!!

  • There was football. Definatly remember Cantona jumping in the crowd was on sportsnight, If there was any midweek premiership or FA Cup game on then hightlights would be shown from at least 2 games.

  • Great theme. Brings me back to being allowed stay up on Wednesday schoolnights just to watch it. Remember watching a 4-4 draw between Liverpool and Everton in the Cup, sometime in the late 80s or so, when Liverpool went ahead four times and Everton drew level four times. Great stuff. Steve Rider presenting. Previews of the Grand National. Or the Ryder Cup. Ah well...

  • Yeah, me too.

  • A classic theme, although it perhaps starts fairly normally and then ramps up half way through to a great crescendo at the end (the brass kicking in is what makes this theme truly memorable). Nowadays, the onscreen graphics would be laughed at, but this was the eighties. BTW, weren't there other graphics for Sportsnight at various points (I seem to remember floodlights being prominent in one)?

  • Real sports tv, then sky came along and fucked it up!

  • greyhound racing on a wednesday night, things just aint the same as they used to be

  • Terrific theme had me going at the time

  • classic stuff.
