Ha ha, yeah I occasionally go on spotify and have a 'favorite jazz musican' session. And when I came (again) to Pat I was like 'what was that song? That ONE song, you know - how does it go - what was the name? And I had to search again and again and then I found it - Half Life of Absolution - motherfucker, how elegant is that melody?! And then both Pat and Lyle solo the shit out of it (Pat does in the 'road to you' ablum version) - sick!!!!
Critically one of their best. Need to pump this through a decent sound system to get the best out of it. Dont play on a full moon night outside with headphones - lol
Why has this video got over 3500 plays? Because I personally played it 3000 times - and everytime I hear it - I get chills. One of the best of all the songbook.
Thanks so much for posting this. I have an old VHS tape of this performance that I'm afraid to play too much! One of my PMG favorites - the way they bring in the chord progression for the final chorus makes the tune just soar. It's mysterious and atmospheric in a way similar to some of Sting's most powerful work. By the way, for MF maxx, there's a lead sheet/chart of it in the Pat Metheny Songbook. It's not a transcription, but it's very accurate and it'll get you started.
Such an emotional rush, this song, but I always wished they'd stuck a horn solo in there around 2:40, rather than reprising the free-form ambiance of the intro.
@dkendzior zero tolerance for silence album... i don't know whether it's rock or trash metal... but as far as i know it's one of the 'worst' albums in music history
@stove6 I would constantly listen to the piano solo for inspiration in my own playing! Great, GREAT ideas and just amazing!.... Definitely telling a story!
And also, way much more up-beat I like 'police people' and 'facing west'

This is sadder than blues, this tels a story in a language that connects you to the feeling in ways no other music that I've heard can.

From 4:22 - 4:40, probably the best piano chords
ever played in recorded history. Dynamic tension galore
