  • I've been going to live shows and collecting recordings of them for 25 years now and this show stands as one of my alltime favorites by any band ever. A groove deeper than the abyss and guitar wilder than the gales of a storm at sea. Most art that was cutting edge in its day seems relatively tame decades later, but a masterpiece like this still seems completely fresh to my eyes and ears. Amazing and superb!

  • a great band! cutting edge even now! Adrian a creative force! Check out his work with King Crimson on the Discipline, Beat and 3 of a Perfect pair era. Theres live stuff too. But the Heads are great! David Byrne!

  • I now have two favorite bands that I now adore equally... DEVO AND THE TALKING HEADS!!! Once in a lifetime, you've got to ask yourself... are we not men?

  • This is literally the best thing I have ever seen.

  • I saw Belew with the bears in Boston twice he did a lot of Jimi, it was great!!!

  • One of my top five favourite bands of all times. NO DOUBT. And the footage from this concert is a total trip. To have been born in another decade..... sigh.

  • Two different houses surround you, around you!

  • Their best song! I fucking love the chorus, it cuts right through my spine.

  • WoW!

  • damn this was one great live band, saw this incarnation at a hall in Rhode Island, best show I have EVER seen.

  • Busta Jones, Bernie Worrell-- Funky as you WANNA be!

  • perfect famous song - great

  • Was just looking for a vid to match up with the song on my Ipod. Christ on a crutch! Adrien Belew with the heads in the 80's? Just like on the original release? My face has been rocked off.......

  • thats too much! i'm in super awe!

  • Pretty sure that's Nona Hendryx, not Dolette MacDonald.

  • @vinvanveen Sorry, that's Dolette, not Nona. Dolette is very easy to look at, but I remember Nona. Ms. Hendrix had a body that could make a preacher fuck up.

  • @doozerace As it turns out, you are right. I guess I got confused because it's Nona Hendryx on the album.

  • @vinvanveen An easy mix-up, considering both were amazing vocalists that were in mad demand during that period. Man, I loved em' both.

  • fuck kids who try and relate Radiohead to Talking heads, if anything mention sonic youth. Fuckin hate when kids always bring up radiohead and nirvana and bands like that.

  • Awesome!

  • Most of the suggestive lyrics of Talking Heads will remain for ever: "Tell us a little bit but not to much"

    Marvellous performance!!'

  • 'Remain in Light' never seems to date..

  • Born in 1972... Momentary had this love for TH.. And now... Again BIG eyeopener... This band is just ROCKING-swinging----> everything in this... I like to dance!! ;)

  • The chorus in this performance sounds so goddamn epic. The sneering guitar... I totally love this. Too bad I wasn't born earlier. I will always blame the fucking stork for it

  • I first heard Adrian Belew when he was with David Bowie on the "Stage" live album, and was absolutely stunned by what he could do with an electric guitar. He was a perfect fit for the Heads' expanded line-up as well as with King Crimson later.

  • art in motion

  • W O W...I saw this band play & I'm still blown away...better than stop making sense

  • Scary good

  • and drums

  • Actually Adrian started out as a studio musician as far as my recollection goes. The first time I ever heard of him was with Frank Zappa. Crush all boxes tour 1979. But he did play these leads between 82-84 with David, Tina, Jerry and Chris. I love the Twang bar king. I also saw him with King Crimson. Tony Levin was slapping the bass. Bill Buford and Robert Fripp accompanied with the guitar.

  • SIMPLY GENIUS!!!!!!

  • 'psychedafro ultra funk punk' ...how the fuck do you label a sound like this????

  • Comment removed

  • There is no one comparable

  • I remember listening to this crap when I was like 13. I'm not over it now and I will never be over it. David Byrne is my poet. I want to be at this show.

  • wish I was there!!!(but this is also great!!!! thanks for putting it,you make a big fan very happy!!!!

  • wish I was there!!!

  • wicked!!!

  • 90%people are dump,TALKING HEADS 100.000visitors,PIXIES 100.000visitors, LADY GAGA 5MIL

  • @TheOpuzenac AND.....

  • LOVE THIS RECORD

  • Although you endorse 9/11 conspiracy. I love you helplessly for posting this. :D

  • @joveismad - Jove! golly... I love youtube comments. Although you endorse complacency, sloth, ignorance of geopolitics, and a complete and utter lack of even the most miniscule understanding of physics, I love you helplessly for commenting on and listening to the best incarnation of the Talking Heads of all time : D

why even waste the space on the server to comment on how you think 19 guys with boxcutters taking orders from a dude in a cave brought down the twin towers? Cheers.

  • never turned pop? where have you been, thom yorke recording with Bjork? No suprises? stuff it anyway , this is a talking heads video. More art inclined than an agit pop band, albeit the similarities with gang of four (being robert fripp's backing band and all)

  • You are forgetting Ednah Holt on back up vocals.

  • BTW, it's AdriAn not AdriEn.

  • @lippyduck Care?

  • Great video. Just wish it had that final killer funk-out of the "The Name Of This Band..." version.

  • damn this is good footag3. They seeem like they would ahve been amazing live

  • this is a fantastic version of this song.

  • amazing!!!!!

  • I just remind you of the producer of this album. got it?

  • Smokey:

That, sir, is called inspiration: the ability to seize the day by fucking up.

  • I LOVE THIS BAND

  • With two bassists and *four* guitarists this could so easily be total nonsense but in fact it's just sublime. I wish I'd seen them live.

  • @SmokeyTheFatCat and don't forget a keyboardist and 2 1/2 *adrian sometimes plays percussion* percussionists haha

  • awesome !!!!!!!!!

  • they should have performed once in a lifetime

  • David Byrne is a musical genius

  • God damn...this is just amazing. Talking Heads live is something that is probably never going to be replicated. The percussion is like a heartbeat. You can just see it flowing through all the musicians. Stunning music.

  • I have been completely overtaken by Talking Heads' awesomeness so many times now that I officially need a t-shirt.

  • Tight musicianship, can't go wrong with the Talking Heads.

  • Are those seagulls I hear at 5:10? belew is crazy.

  • aw c'mon. david Gilmour was doing that in 1969. However, belew is fucking awesome either way

  • True. Gilmour is one of the best.

  • Not to this extent....Belew invented this style!!

  • 2:45; Adrian Belew just takes this song over...fucking awesome

  • GREAT SONG i LOVED

  • radiohead and the talking heads are BOTH incredible! talking heads were just incredible FIRST!

  • a great gig, but i wouldnt compare it to the album version

    ougk

  • I knew muy heart, wuz in the right place

  • chris frantz is so hot! ahh!! <3

  • divide and dissolve

  • most underrated concert band of all time

    they just soared in person

  • i love these older concerts, but i always can't help but get annoyed by dolette macdonald's voice.

  • 4:24 are you crazy, all the back up musicians Mr. Byrne picks are truly amazing.

  • she can sing i'll give her that, but her mic is way too loud

  • David Byrne had all the levels how he wanted them, I can all but guarantee that.

  • this absolutely kills.

    why no embed? :(

  • Genius. And that backup singer is fantastically hot.

  • I agree completely. I saw both of those tours live at Red Rocks in Colorado and THIS band and concert was MUCH better musically than Stop Making Sense. The latter was more caught up with the visuals and Alex Weir is no Adrian Belew. And, in the Remain in Light concert I saw, Nona Hendryx joined Dolette McDonald on back-up vocals. THAT was super-charged.

  • No doubt! As much as I love Stop Making Sense, in my opinion, the definitive polyrhythmic Talking Heads "live" album is the "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads". I'm talking about the Central Park Show. I emphatically state that you must also listen to "the Great Curve" from "Remain In Light" . I assure you, there are no words to describe awesome power and beauty of the Adrian Belew solo coda . Check it out.

  • I saw the Red rocks shows, as well and agree completely.

  • i think i like this concert more than the stop making sense film. it's more raw and feels less synthetic.... i love the sound with adrian belew and 2! bassists...

  • Best band ever! I miss that feeling today.

  • go ahead

  • DB and his voice.

  • This is as good as it can get!

  • i was at the concert in bologna 3 days before..the best concert i ever seen..really..i was out of my mind for days...

  • If anyone out there has 5.1 surround (with full-sized surround speakers, ideally), the dual-disc version of this song is absolutely incredible, and I HIGHLY recommend getting it. Best surround mix I've ever heard (surpasses even the Flaming Lips' surround mixes, and in my books, that's something! :)

  • Hey Mikey, what's the title of the disk?

  • it's on the Remain In Light DualDisc - one side is a CD of the original album (plus bonus tracks) and the flip side is a DVD of the album in 5.1 surround. I can't say enough good things about the 5.1 mixes - they add a whole new dimension to the songs, and Houses In Motion is a standout in particular. Hope you can pick it up!

  • Thanks very much. I have just invested in a decent souround sound so I'll see if I can locate the Dual Disk.

  • A close COUSIN? Radiohead didn't even start to exist until 4 years after Talking Heads ended. They may have been influenced but I really don't hear it at all. Radiohead is Green Day by comparison to talking heads

  • Hey man- uncalled for! Don't get me wrong- NOTHING can touch this- just Radiohead is rather beautiful, too, in a very different way- give them another listen. (AND, they never (yet) turned pop, broke up, or the likes, unlike certain others. Dammit, DB! Why?)

  • i know this is a 3 month old comment, but as incredible as they are, radiohead got fucking PREACHY AS SHIT at their live shows.

  • @BabyWetsAllNight Uh, Radiohead is a great band, one of my favorites of all time. So is Talking Heads, but comparing the two is a bit silly, because they sound nothing alike. Thom Yorke is obviously a huge TH fan, but I agree with you that there is hardly any TH influence to be heard in their music.

They both have/had a very unique sound.

  • @kucharek01 disagree tremendously, no point in debating it here

  • @kucharek01 i agree, both great bands, but even if he didn't influence him, Belew definitely anticipated A LOT of Johnny Greenwood's approach to the guitar, particularly in it's relationship to the arrangement.

  • @BabyWetsAllNight

Kid A disagrees with you...so do Ok Computer...

  • @DideeKawaii

Ahh but Remain in Light, Talking Heads 77 and More Songs About Buildings and Foods disagrees with you!

P.S Kid A is a subpar Radiohead album imo The Bends is their true masterpiece!!

  • @gideonblackman

i dont know why Remain in light would disagree with me, ive never compared the work of Talking head with the work of Radiohead. Buildings and foods and 77 arent better than Ok Computer, and i think that Fear of Music is better than those two TH albums youve just mentioned. I agree that the Bends is a great album but Ok computer is much better, the best album of the 90s in my opinion. And its rather harsh to call kid a a subpar album...

  • @BabyWetsAllNight Talking Heads is awesome but Radiohead deserves the same merit. You cannot compare Green Day with Radiohead, it is a terrible insult.

  • @BabyWetsAllNight oh come on man, i may be young but i have an unimaginable respect for the talking heads while acknowledging that radiohead is genius. Its just a different generation... thats all.

No matter what generation we are speaking of, we must always remember to remain in light...

  • Man these guys were crazy. I just wish I could have gotten a chance to see them live.

  • No one has caught up with this band. Radiohead is named after a TH song, and they get credit for being a close cousin. To this day, this music remains unrivaled.

  • appearantly this was during the bra burning era, hah a.

  • Belew was "just" a sideman for the tour (and the record), although he clearly has more presence than most of the official band members. great jam.

  • Tina Weymouth rules!

  • Tina rules.

  • the vocals are *outstanding in this one

  • wow

  • I was there! One of the most beautiful concerts I've ever seen. I was sixteen, and came from Naples to see the show. By the way, the opening set was performed by the Selecters (a british ska band). But the TH played wonderfully. The whole audience danced all the time, mesmerised by the energy coming from the stage...

  • I can't seem to hear this enough.

  • Timeless artists.

90 years from now, this will still be the shit!

  • esto es reggae, aprendan los cafres.

  • this is the best stuff i've ever seen. i've never seen this before, i love youtube.

    crap.

  • Sometime in 75 or 76 my friend saw them at CBGB before they were famous and couldn't stop talking about them. She said they'd be famous one day...she was right! Amazing band, really powerful, unique music.

  • this concert footage is some of my favorite shit ever! shout out to youtube

  • did the b-52s open?

  • Can't believe I never saw this before. Absolutely made my day. This is rock history. What I would give to see Byrne & Belew on tour together again.

  • but not TOO much

  • late entry, obviously...just wanna say that whoever mixed this was/were geniuses! and just think, i still get weird looks when i say t-heads are one of my faves! this is spiritual music!!!

  • geil !

  • Una delle più belle canzoni dei TALKING 1980 anni di grande musica e di grandi cambiamenti...

  • si ma in peggio

  • This is the high point of the show for me, everything comes together perfectly and the pacing is incredible. That's Dolette McDonald singing & banging the cowbell, I believe Nona Hendryx did participate in this tour, she's also on Jerry's solo album which he was working on with a portable recorder while on the road. Lynn Mabry & Edna Holt did not appear with the band before the 1983 Stop Making Sense tour. At some point someone should really write a book just about this era of the band.

  • I did too at one time, but they are indeed very different people both of whom just happened to play the baddest basses ever, have the last name of Jones, and having worked with Brian Eno.

  • Kommentar: Einfach nur der reinste Wahnsinn. Man stelle sich vor, das war vor 28 Jahren !!

  • genau!

  • Except it's not Nona Hendrix. It's Lynn Mabry. Nona didn't tour with them, but was on the LP. Too bad. She's incredible. Mabry is a doll, though. I like her.

  • Lynn Mabry appears on Stop Making Sense live concert, but it's not her in Rome. Byrne introduced the Band on one of the other tracks. Enjoying this one too much to go look.

  • Jolette McDonald(?) He introduces her at 0:37 of Track04 I Zimbra.

  • Dolette McDonald.

  • GOED GEANTWOORD!

  • I could have sworn Nona was with them at Radio City on this tour.....??

  • that's not grace jones

  • that's not grace jones

  • where did you come up with those names? do you know what Grace Jones looks or sounds like? This is an amazing clip though..

  • dude....you don't really 'get' music then. that's too bad. she's a great singer and beautiful to match. also, remember, this is not a mastered studio recording, so, if anything you should be upset with the engineers running the boards who, i'll admit, could have been a little more on point

  • Seriously, any mp3's of this concert? It's completely awesome.

  • @Spyritus Yes, I want them too. This completely blows Stop Making Sense out of the water.

  • sorry that it affects your experience that way. i love the dissonance.

  • I Ask Myself?Where the FUCKis MOJIQUE (Remain In Light).Love David Byrne and Talking Heads ,great sound ,it speaks with my soul.

  • This is beyond belief. I've probably listened to this video more than 100 times in the last year. It's hynoptic and addictive. So many layers to the music. I've loved the heads for years, but I had no idea they could be this good. Tpat, thanks for posting.

  • Buy Stop Making Sense on DVD. Its amazing.

  • That's an understatement. It's the greatest live concert DVD I have ever seen.

  • i have a 48 minute concert dvd of the talking heads with this line up from germany 1980 that is great. video quality blows this away. if you have an interest please send me a message via you tube for information on this and many other hard to get cool concert dvd's

  • What was the name of the backing vocalist please? She's got a fine voice too.

  • dollette mcdonald nona hendryx also sang on some songs

  • This clip is beyond fantasic. It defines the 80´s. I am amazed how early in the decade it was recorded. It´s funky, brainy, knowing, ironic and hypnotic. It is probably my favourite YouTube clip. long live The Talking Heads legacy!!!!

  • The TH were certainly breaking new ground the entire time they were out there making new music. I saw the original lineup about 6 times in the 70's, but never got to see these lineups where they expanded to include the latin rhythms that Byrne really got into later, and Belew's guitar really changed the sound a lot. Nothing sounded like this then, nothing like it now. It's sad the Tina is voicing the Gorilla's now!, but we all gotta' eat and I hope they are having fun.

  • This is stunning stuff. Love it. This sound is timeless so why not bring it back?

God knows today's music is empty - no one would miss it if it was gone.

  • Yeah the Heads should reform and do the Remain in Light tour again. Travel the world with it.

Now that would be an experience you wouldn't forget.

  • YEAH!!!!Let Me Know When The Time Is There!Adore Byrne and his attitude, great performer!

  • It sounds that way - but Byrne picked up much of the lyric from a Southern Baptist preacher...
