@groov539 Very easily. While I'm not here to call it's owner abusive, I do understand holding one by it's tail isn't very safe for the animal. [Not abusive, just not safe] A sugar glider has a semi-prehensile tail, meaning it can't fully support itself [it's weak] and is mostly used for balance. Sure, you could hold it by the tail, just as you could a cat or dog... but the tail isn't meant for that and very well could cause harm to the animal.

It's OK to hold them from their tail, I have a sugar glider of my own and know quite a bit more from experience. I don't know about yours but to you people who don't own a sugar glider, they have tails related to the opossums, who have strong tails. If they are nestled in a place where you can't get them and only their tail is hanging out, that is the best thing to reach for. If you aim for their body, they crab and basically try to maul your hand with their sharp teeth. So cool it, guys.
