Equinox was followed up by another great album "Crystal Ball". But, I think Equinox is my all time favorite. This is totally unique form of rock and roll. I used to play this LP on my dad's old console stereo. I would crank the volume all the way up. The sound was so pure and melodic, like the sound of pure crystal hanging in cold air on a snowy day.
I miss the 70s. Good and bad - but overall it was exciting to be alive. Things were really happening in so many ways.
@mymyharlow I love this album. Do you remember the sleeve on the inside with all the pictures of different albums by albums recording with A and M records? I do. I wish I could find that album again. I have this on tape cassette but it's interesting to see the sleeve.
I LOVE the opening of this song, as well as the rest of it for that matter. It is the most unique intro of any song ever. I liked this album, but if I was pressured into picking a favorite, I would have to choose The Grand Illusion.
@eldato333 I would expect a critique like that from someone like YOU who wouldn't know a good song if it came up and kicked him in the nuts! Oh, well. You know what they say, opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one.
Having been a major Styx fan I have to say that "Equinox" without a doubt is my most favorite LP. I have everything from the first LP to "Edge of the Century" on vinyl(including the numerous radio promo Lp's) and the rest on disc. I love this band. Have since I was 7 years old and I'm 43 now.
I am a fan of all rock & roll music..love The Beatles..love anything from the 80's..having said that let me say I have always loved Styx..thought I knew all of their songs but this is one I have never heard before..it is a really good song! I guess if I had to pick an all time fav it would be "Loreli" but there are so many others so hard to say for sure LOL! I actually saw Styx in concert back in 2006 at Chastain Park in Atlanta, GA. They were great & still have most of the original members!
@borgduck I think Dennis may have written this about his first days with his wife, when they started dating. Back then, they were indeed children - both teenagers. Now they've been married for over 40 years!
Nah, Dennis is amazing and all and is essential but Tommy Shaw was the man! Compare Tommys songs to Dennis Deyoungs on the albums Cornerstone, Crystal Ball, and Grand Illusion.
Tommy Shaw is not on this album...not till Grand Illusion did he appear....but they're both great albums....."Equinox" and "Grand Illusion'...John Curulewski was the guitarist on ""Equinox" but quit/left just before they started touring....Tommy shaw joined/was hired at the last minute before the "Equinox" tour. In those days, albums were released and then bands would tour on the strength of said album...NOWADAYS, bands tour prior to the release of a new album...hope that was informative.
@Cheops2112 They still make and sell albums? And tour? I thought they just did talking (rap) soundbytes for Twitter, iTunes and Entertainment Tonight.
I grew up listening to Styx back in the 1980s and am still a big fan of them, but I cannot believe that I have not heard of this song until now. This song is one of the best I've ever heard from them. In my opinion, Styx and Rush are the two most talented bands I have ever heard perform.
this is one of the great Styx songs . Tommy Shaw took a great rock band and added to it . I remember seeing them in New Orleans at the Warehouse backing up Wishbone Ash and Styx with newly Tommy shaw was much better .
Wow! I thought I was the only one out there that thought this way! Couldn't agree more. The old Wooden Nickel albums had some of their best work on them, and most people (even Styx fans) don't even know they exist! I grew up not too far from Chicago's Roseland neighborhood, (where all the original members were from) and first saw them in (I think) 1972. What an incredibly great band they were then! I saw the remainder of Styx a few years ago. Still a good show, but nothing like the old days!
I actually must say I am in agreement with you. When I posted that comment, I was more referring to the classic era of Styx, but I too have not been nearly as interested as the post-DeYoung Styx as I am in the Wooden Nickel and Classic era of Styx. However, I'm not saying the 'new' band is bad, I am simply saying I feel that Dennis DeYoung was the leader of Styx, and without him Styx just isn't Styx.
I am an ENORMOUS Styx fan myself, they were the first band I ever got into and still are my favourite 7 years later. Id say they do have one lowsy song though, in my opinion its Shoes on the Crystal Ball album. Just really doesnt stand out, you know?
My favorite song on this (my favorite) Styx album. I think that it shows some of the range of styles - gentle in the beginning and then the build to the end - of the band. Chuck's - bassline steady but moving. Thanks so much for posting, StyxFan93!
I am absolutely thrilled that you liked it! That is the exact reason I made this account - to remind people like you of the great memories that this music brings back!
@Ladyeglantine This is also my favorite Styx album. This was a time when it seemed like almost everyone was so much more relaxed, laid backed. There was a little more trust, and a lot less stress, and tension, and the music that Styx created reflected the mood at that time.
I have a playlist of this whole album if you, or anyone else, wanted to check it out. I also have a Crystal Ball, Pieces Of Eight, and Grand Illusion playlist.
Oh Thank You I am a HUGE Styx,Journey,Rush,REO Nazareth Fan ,My Fav Guitarest are Neal Schon and Tommy Shaw, Even tho he wasnt on Equinox or how ever ya spell it..First time I saw them was Pieces of Eight Tour..AWESOME Was in Kansas City,Dont remember who opened up,But Thay brought the House down...
This was the first album (vinyl album ) that I bought. I was about 7 or 8 years old at the time. My brother originally had it and I listened to this all the time. I still have the album and now the CD. This brings back great memories. Listening to it now, I still remember all the fills and riffs - Thanks for the STYX fix!
No Problem at all, pjslugz67, in fact, that is exactly what I aim for with these videos... To bring back forgotten memories of the greatest rock band ever!
Just found Mother Dear. Thank you. You are appreciated. Did you know they had a concert where those songs were played. It was in 1976. I saw it somewhere on the internet but cant remember where. These songs make me think of the Vietnam war just ending in April 1975. I was only a young child then.
Excellent song! In fact the best of the album besides Lorelei. Great album from Styx! Full of quality!

One of Dennis' best vocal performances.

One day I decided to make a medley CD of my favorites from the '70s rock groups I like and grew up with, so of course Styx was on the short list.
There were so many that I had enough material for 5 CDs so I decided to allow only the top 4 from each group.
When finished I noticed all 4 Styx cuts all began with the letter L:
Lorelei, Lady, Light Up & Lonely Child.
That probably has no significant meaning at all, but I thought it interestingly odd
Lovingly Listening,

Light Up
Lorelei

How spooky, they all begin with the letter 'L'.
