Actually, in my work blogging I find quite a few who think socialism & communism are the same thing, and they are not 12. I'm glad you are not an idiot and understand that socialism is a form of governing that merges private & public collective ownership of large industry so as to benefit the citizenry first. Communism allows no private ownership. This is critical in understanding X's reaction to Reaganism in the 80s & it's drive to total privatization & the dangers of Fascist/Corporatism.
I thought a lot people are just scared socialism will lead to communism. It does seem similar except the people will have the power i guess not the government or person.

^ [ When Exene was writing poetry, and when she & John were writing lyrics, a basic high school education was a lot better than it is today. People get on the internet & start reading all kinds of twisted stuff. They actually mean well. They just don't know the basics.] Thanks for the comment BLKSUN
Um, okay, the song wasn't really about the New Deal. "The New World" refers more to the original experiment of America, how it was supposed to be this attempt to put these very theoretical ideas of democracy into practice. I've always taken this song to be about how America has fallen short of the original ideals it was founded on.
Pulling a "New Deal" meaning out of this is a bit of a stretch.
If you listen to the lyrics on the rest of this album they use a lot of 1930s and 40s images. These songs mention "The Grapes Of Wrath" in a few instances. This was not about the revolutionary war, they saw a new "great depression" coming under Reagan and wrote about it.
America was not "an attempt to put ideals of democracy into practice." If that was true, then America would have split from GB much sooner than they did. In actuality, no one gave a shit about democracy until it became an excuse to not pay taxes. Another thing, if our infallible ancestors cared so much about democracy, how the fuck did we go until the 1960s before we even gave black people their right? And we still deny rights to gay people. People care about their own wellbeing, not democracy
I guess you read that phrase too fast. Think about the words "attempt" & "ideal",instead of "democracy". We struggle to form a more perfect union yet are a long way from Utopia to be sure. When this song came out, we were taking huge steps BACKWARDS as a nation.Sure Nixon was a criminal, but our society rejected him. The Reagan revolution was about ERASING gains for Gays, non-whites, the poor&middle classes. This song is a wake up call: We're losing the small gains we'd fought for! TheNew World!
question....how do you expect a ustopia with a socialist or marxcist controll -forced controll of the people? so if i read you correctly -your saying that gov controll of evryones property to 'empower' the poor is the solution...and special rights for perversion is "gain" ? wow....i am speachless...what a utopia!
is democracy THE PEOPLE HAVING A SAY IN WHAT ARE GOVERNMENT DOES so yeah the majority do not want to give gays rights..... how is that not still democracy and im not agianst gay people if i was old enough to voted to give all of them equal rights marriage whatever im just saying the majority of the PEOPLE VOTED AGIASNT IT and thats what democracy is all about right the people haivng a say
jc4jcjcjc20jc, I respect how you use your mind. That's a logical point. Jefferson wanted our system to be a republic first, but a republic that was governed by democracy. The majority wanted to preserve SLAVERY too, but our system obeys the constitution first - the people cannot vote to remove rights. Soon the GLBT community will be vindicated. It is the American way. We are subject to the words of our founders. We are free.We have unalienable rights. X reminds us to share freedom even w/the poor
No this wasn't a song that Electra felt was "an AM hit" or whatever those douchebags were "thinking" when they picked the 1 or 2 songs to promote. whoa...just a minute... whats that crtap about reagan? are you serious? reagan stopped the'cold war" and validated much of what "they" had fought for as u put it...and i would add that he had wide support from rep's AND DEMOCRATS with a democrat run congress! the new deal was a 'raw deal' on the us people.... socialist ,at best which is why we have money problems..can u say irs,can u say ssi can u say incom tax!...look, you really need to get your facts is all im saying
Better not let Exene hear u talkin like that. If I was as misinformed as you, I'd agree. I can tell your heart is in the right place- but if you look a little deeper you'll see what reagan's administration did to us. The real "socialism" is coming from post-reagan Corporate Welfare. They are giving our tax dollars to "bail out" billionares.. and letting people lose their houses. That's the worst kind of "socialism". Social Security is civilized. Their economic royalism is barbaric.
well exene is exene...that doesnt change facts. its not socialism so much as it is 'facism' ,i think thats what your getting at. reagan did a lot of good acyually . he even ordere an audit on where the income tax money we paid was going to. the survey or study done ,showed that over 90 % of income tax we pay goes to pay the fed reserve bank. the people who are loosing thier homes should have done thier homework and noyt overloaded themselves.
I agree with you on the tax changes he wanted to make. Did you notice he got shot right when he was getting into that... and stopped all of his activity on that front? Probably just a coincidence. ;-) - But Fascism is when corporations run the government... we also practice corporate socialism. We socialize the risks of business but privatize the rewards. Greedy scum find amazing new ways to screw us. The Reagan deregulation sucked! All of "More fun in the new world" has many New Deal lyrics.
fox news ? im not quoting fox news or msnbc for that matter. just the facts here. reagan was /is a good president. roosevelt really screwed the us with is socialist bs programs..but it really started all snowballing with pres. wilson.. that guy was a traitor DELUXE! did you know that there is not a law that says we /u.s. citizens...have to pay income tax? thats a fact. theirs and the fed reserve are the new world order incarnate.
Ah. Hi Ron Paul Fan. Ok... no debating with you. You see things through a special set of specs. Just know that X was interested in the New Deal, the Great depression and how homelessness increased in L.A. under Reagan. They felt "trickle down" was "alms for the poor" - I heard Exene rant back then, and I agreed with her then as I do now. These corporatists are letting the salt of the earth suffer and die. This was supposed to be the new world.
i do NOT like ron paul!i know bz-i dont think he would agree although i think excene would, maybe john as well.but most people who 'like' the new deal..dont know what the'new deal' was.example..fanny may -the gov. entity responsible for the current economic meltdown -created by the new deal. of course u agreed with excene..i used to agree with lennon and trotsky- but then when i became informed enuff to know that if you kill the cow..you wont have any milk!
one more thing.... you and every dem i know love to blame reagan..it was carter who left the mess for reagan-or did you like getting a loan at 21% and paying VERY high gas prices..if you could find gas! yeah..carter. & what do dems do whwn they want to get elected? blame the reps..sure!i was always taught by my folks to look at the issue and candidates objectively and my father and i were union. but it was carter.NOT reagan who fucked up!
prove it. You can't- because that's a fantasy. Reagan was the living push back to FDR buy those who would rule us via their money and power. Facts are facts. Your fantasies, no matter how much sean hannity shouts them, are not reality. Reagan's legacy is in the financial melt down. Greed kills. I hope we get our new world now.
yes, and unions enabling Japanese to flood market with cheap cars. Unions serve a valuable purpose but the combination of what you said and the unions sunk Detroit and as Detroit goes, so goes the country. And I agree with your Carter assessment. A disaster. Had a golden opportunity after Nixon/Ford, with the country ready for real "change" if you pardon the use of that word and he was a disaster in 4 short years domestically and with foreign policy.
That's it. Blame the unions. Americans. Using a democratic tool of organizing to stand up to corporations (aka modern kingdoms). Fox news pushes that organized labor is harming "the nation"... it only harms their greed. What is sad is that you fall for that message. You shout for King George and Against 1776... and you don't even know it.
Organizing is the greatest power the people have. We couldnt have ended segregation & Jim Crow had the meekest, poorest persons not organized& stood their ground. The difference is thatToday Fox News nearly says that civil rights activists were radicals 2 blame. GM didn't like having to pay decent wages, so they helped create a corporate media 2lie2 all of us, & in govt. to undo the fairness of our society & keep their $ power.*GM will break the US economy to get their way. UNIONS R DEMOCRACY.

i do NOT like ron paul!i know bz-i dont think he would agree although i think excene would, maybe john as well.but most people who 'like' the new deal..dont know what the'new deal' was.example..fanny may -the gov. entity responsible for the current economic meltdown -created by the new deal. of course u agreed with excene..i used to agree with lennon and trotsky- but then when i became informed enuff to know that if you kill the cow..you wont have any milk!

one more thing.... you and every dem i know love to blame reagan..it was carter who left the mess for reagan-or did you like getting a loan at 21% and paying VERY high gas prices..if you could find gas! yeah..carter.

I hope we get our new world now.

p.s. this is still a great song! as far as the demise of detroit...it was high taxes and liberal gov that screwed that city into the grave!

yes, and unions enabling Japanese to flood market with cheap cars.
