To answer several of your questions, as a general rule, make-up, hair and costume test footage didn't have sound, which made them cheaper to do, since you wasn't paying a sound guy to be holding a boom mike and a sound mixer, not to mention having to sync them in post production.
The object of these clips were to see how the wardrobe and hair/make-up did with the studio lighting and the camera angles. What may look great in person may not look so good on celluloid!
I'm trying to remember this as best I can... I recall that neither Marlo nor Elizabeth Montgomery, who had big ABC hits on Thursday nights, neither ever got an Emmy as best actress in a comedy series. And the way I heard it, either Marlo told Elizabeth, or the other way around, "If we were the only two nominees, they'd (the Emmy board) would announce there's no winner this year."
You can see how sweet Marlo was in these tests, which are really boring to do but there she is smiling and having a good time anyway. Her sweetness really comes through in these tests.
Most of these are wiglets and hairpieces which were common at the time.
Wow, some of that hair is bigger than Fran Fine's on the Nanny! Anyway, they got it right with the 'flip' and bangs she wore for several years. Loved that!
True, she did always have either her boyfriend or Dad around, but I think when people say that she wasn't truly a "single girl", people have to remember that this was WAY before Carrie Bradshaw, Murphy Brown and even Mary Tyler Moore. I mean, this show was the first to truly feature in its storyline a young woman leaving the security of her parents home and her small town life for the sake of her own independence and career. At the time, that was unheard of.
Anybody who researches That Show soon realizes that she had more than nepotism going for her. She was the backbone of that show and made it work with her ideals, chutzpah and sheer energy.
I could never imagine Marlos Thomas w/o "THAT HAIR!" It was truly a signature part of the show was her hair do and those great clothes. Her dresses always had matching coats and and hats and shoes and jewerly... I mean for a single girl, on her own, she did pretty darn good. Well there was always DON and DADDY on each side of her, also.
They always talk about how she was like the first "single girl," and all that? Well in a way she really wasn't. She ALWAYS had "THAT MAN!" Don Hollinger, (Ted Bessell) as her boyfriend from episode one where they meet, and there was always her, "DADDY," to help her out also. It was always a given that Ann and Donald were going steady and to be engaged, and eventually get married! She was never truly single, if you think about it.
If my Father produced a lot of TV shows I'd get my own show also. Without Daddy she would have never gone anywhere. Who can blame her I'd do the same thing!
No general comment on Marlo vs. Barbara or Elizabeth. But this test puts across the FIERCE pressure on actresses in these circumstances. How anyone survives, I don't know...and I say this as a community actor who, as a guy, rarely has to worry about this crap.
there used to be a promo for this show where marlo jumped into a folding bed that closed up on her and as she struggled to get out it jerked back and forth - as a child I had a recurring nightmare that this walking bed was coming to eat me - it would chase me through the house but it moves slow so in horror i would just watch it approach but kept far enough away to avoid being eaten...
I know!!! This was the first girl I had a crush on! But in real life she is satanic! Mean to everyone! Mean to interviewers, mean to household staff, mean to Phil!!!
Very beautiful, and a bit offbeat for the time. She and Mary Tyler Moore were so attractive, but not in the bottle-blonde way, like so many other girls of the time. Later, Cher did it too, in her unique way.
@rachelazw I completely disagree. The nose job diminished her. She was more beautiful with her original nose. You can have all your barbie dolls with tinkerbell pug-noses. This woman had a stunning natural beauty that hollywood and Barbie ideals could NEVER manufacture. Her beauty was true to her middle-eastern and Italian heritage. IMO those two cultures have produced some of the most gorgeous women in history.
Though the Bubble or Flip became her trademark for the show. The other hairstyles looked quite nicely on her. Those were the hairstyles during that time. Now the women don't comb or style their hair to come to the office like before. Today it's a mess.
@kurtywurty85 I don't know maybe because I see her MOVING HER LIPS and I kind of like to HEAR WHAT SHE'S SAYING PERHAPS...That's just my take on it. How about you?
man, it's hard to believe that this beautiful girl came from the loins of Danny Thomas. Anybody remember the mug on that guy? dont get me wrong he was a good guy .
Let's see... beautiful, sexy, great hair, great smile....and, oh yeah....who did you say your daddy was? We'll get back to you.
