I happened to come across this song and I had never heard of Cyndi Thomson before. She is really amazing and has a great voice. I think this song is really great! I also came across a young 15 year old artist, Brittany Kwasnik and her songs Liar, This Thing and Breathe. She has a really great and unique voice and is a brilliant songwriter! I can't believe she is so talented at 15! Anyway, I really enjoy finding great talent and I am so happy I found this song and video today!

I don't know why listeners are dedicating it to their boyfriends (unless they want to break up and be love sick). However I bet they weren't listening closely and didn't notice the use of past tense (which I thought was very obvious) or her talking about missing him now that he is gone at the very end (about 2:30 min into the song).
