Still one of the best tributes to the man on YT, I cry every time I watch it. Happy 75th, Jim, wherever you are. I grieve for the untold joys this world lost when we lost you in 1980.
What moron decided that this video is unsuitable for childern? There is nothing
dirty or obscene about it ! Yes,its sad-but what a wonderful tribute to a man who
gave us some childhood friends we will always remember. That line,"but who else could make them believe?" is so true. No one(before or since)has been able to make us believe. patybear
Why is this video flagged as "Age Restricted" based on community guidelines, with a red exclamtion mark ?? Do they just take peoples word for it when they flag the video or is it intended as a joke >>
I got to tour the Sesame Street set when I was about 6. Met Frank Oz (Jim wasn't there that day). Jim died when I was 8, and I remember crying THEN. Such an outstanding person and amazing inspiration.
I grew up with the Muppets. Watched Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock every day, and I owned all the tapes (still do). I had a Big Bird doll I carried around. Despite having grown up with Henson's creations, he died a month after I was born. I actually didn't know he was dead until Wikipedia launched when I was ten and his name was the first thing I looked up. I was actually sick to my stomach, ten years later. It's so beautiful that his name lives on in his company and still makes so many happy.
For those of you who don't know, September 24th of this year will mark Jim Henson's 75th birthday. I wonder if people should put a compilation of some of Jim's best works together on YouTube. Perhaps one person puts something, and then another person adds to it, or we add to a video such as this "Happy 75th Birthday Jim Henson".
*sigh* I was born a year after he died, never knew til I was in middle school. my mom showed this to me and we cried together. I always wished I could be half the artist he was. his characters were so outragous but a small part of you always believed they were real </3
So incredibly hard to believe he's been gone for 20 years now, wow. Wherever he is, I know he's smiling at this glorious tribute. Thanks again, and Happy Birthday, Jim, we're all better having "known" you.
umm...someone may have said that it should be "inappropriate" because it has clips which give the impression that kermit and the others aren't real...which isn't true! "wink wink"
awww how sweet....truly an American great....miss you Jim! What a gift.... does anyone know where that statue of him and kermit is, that photo toward the end of the video?
He died before I was even born... Just under 2 months before I was born, actually. His work was the basis of my earliest education... He shall be missed. :(
I was only about two when he died. I wasn't even aware of the fact that he was dead till a few years ago. It was kinda like finding out that family member you love is ghost and you just spent the last few years chatting with them when they'd come to visit.
This song always makes me tear up. I love it. If I ever find that statue in the video, I'll sit on the bench, play this on my ipod, and bawl like a kid.
WOW! absolutely beautiful! not ashamed to say it made me cry. jim henson was, is, and always WILL be a true legend! thanks for all the memories... from a lifelong fan!
what a tear jerker.. i hope that the people who are touched by this take solace in the fact that all of us watching, wishing, and being inspired keep jim's memory alive, and perhaps some of us will learn a few lessons from his philosophies on love, life, and work so that we all make this world a little better for having been here.
Thank you so much for posting this - a friend of mine told me about it. I had never heard the song before, didn't even know it existed. But it's beautiful, wonderful & perfect - & now I have to stop.
I think this is the first YouTube video that has actually made me cry. Watching this montage and hearing this song exactly 20 years after Jim Henson's death makes it all the more poignant. And yes, Mr. Henson would have loved the song if he had been alive to hear it. This is a wonderful video, and I thank you for putting it up.
I think this video was flagged because if children listen to this song and understand its meaning, they will cry for the rest of their childhoods. T_T
" 'Anyone could do that.' Well, that's true, I suppose, but who else could make them believe?"
That casual brilliance, the Bing Crosby style one might call it, is a great part of the unfettered genius and untrammelled imagination that still burns inside those of us touched by it, two decades after the passing of the torchbearer.
"He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again."
ok let me get this straight. this video of jim henson is NOT appropriate for children? that's a bunch of crap. BULL CRAP BULL CRAP BULL CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jim Henson's world made my childhood such a wonderful time. I was 11 when he died and I still remember how sad I was. To this day I will watch one of Henson's productions when I feel down and although they take me back to the joy I had when I first saw them, when they finish I'm even sadder, knowing that he's not around to make such gems anymore. RIP, a fantastic human being .
I'm glad that you included the University of Maryland statue. I was there at the dedication as part of a Farscape contingency, and met Brian Henson. He was honored to be carrying on his father's legacy.
I am a huge Jim Henson fan; I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, when TV was dominated by the Muppets (Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, etc), and sadly didn't know he had passed until I was 20 (I was 5 when he did). This song is the most beautiful tribute to a wonderful man who did so much for the world. I count him among the greatest men of the world, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon, and Ghandi. Jim's approach was so unique; a child's heart of innocence.
Also, TimeMachine, you did Mr. Henson and the song justice. Believe me. This video is why I break down earlier than I would just listening to the song.
I have never cried so much in my life! he was a great man and will surely be missed. Its brilliant minds like his that are keeping the creativeness and the joy in this world going. He will never be forgotten.
Thank you man for making this video. I didn't realize how much Jim Henson meant to me and the development of my childhood until I saw this video. So sad he died and such a blessing that you have put a perfect seamless video together in Jim's honor. I think everyone who sees this will shed at least one tear. Jim is smiling on you now.
