Michigans upper peninsula, as far west as you can go! Ironwood is my dads home town so ive been to copperpeak many times...its allways a thrill. the center colum is an elevator and after that you have to walk up the expanded steel stairways up to the ski launch area...you can see straight down and its a huge rush to reach the top...you feel like you summited a mountain! SISU baby!!!
FIS official was at hill late 2010 to look at what it would take to make hill FIS compatible for competition. Unfortunately, MI tax policy is anti-business so I cannot tell if this can be a go again. It closed for reason, no? I wish them the best as it is an awesome sight.
for sure this will be renovated, and almost sure it will be open in june 2010 for summer grand. This will be the 1st ski flying in summer. And all the best jumpers will be there. It will allow jumps to 200 m.
@sportomanokin Im not surprised. Knowing Ironwood, they will have the natural snow on the ground! HAHAHA. Back in 96, we got 17 inches of snow on july 4th!
that krasnojarsk hill and that other hill in slovakia are also interesting, now i'm from finland and we are the only big ski jumping country without a flyinghill but the works for a k195-k200 hill have started somewhere near rovaniemi or aavasaksa thats all i know
@manhattanrocket the ski flying hill in my country (kulm) will be converted up to a hillsize about 250m and the new hill will allow jumps about 270m but i am not sure yet
I'm sad that it's not in use. That would be awesome if it were. Imagine having all the pro's from like the olympics and stuff come to jump there! It would be really neat. Michigan needs the tourism from it too.
hello, are you big fans of ski (flying) jumping? is this structure (inrun) still standing today? are there ay plans to renovate or to enlarge this hill? there are five other skiy flying objects in the world, what do you think of PLANICA, because it's really huge hill, WR = 784 feet =239 m?
I'm definitely a huge fan! My favorite jumper is Simon Ammann.
Yes this jump is still standing, and they have plans to make it up to FIS standards. Unfortuantely there is a lack of funding to get the project done. Planica is awesome, I'd love to go there and watch their competitions sometime! It's the largest in the world.
Im from Ironwood, used to jump for the wolverine ski club, which now the jumps are overgrown. It is sad that it doesnt see much more use than an occasional snowmobile hill climb to raise money for future events. They are just so expensive to hold. I never jumped copper peak, but my old coach, John Kusz has...
Wow that's really cool! Yeah I wish they could gather the funds to make it usable again but money is so tight right now. It's a pity. The sport is truly great to watch.
In my later high school years, some friends and I actually climbed up one night and slept up there...it swayed all night. Coupla beers...truly a yooper high school moment. There are several way to get up to the base of the jump if you have ever been there...one way is gated and locked...the others require four wheel drive. You from up there? I reside in Appleton Wi now. Dont jump anymore, retired in 94. Now I snowboard...rode Copper Peaks landing a few times in sick powder!
no, I'm from land of PLANICA. but i'm very interested in copper peak, what is going on there, will they enlarge this hill, any plans in the future? because it is the only flying hill in western hemishfere an outside of europe (5 fly. hills).
Oh my gosh, slept up there? That would be interesting, lol. I've never been there yet but I'm dying to go and climb it. I've already been to Pine Mtn and Suicide Hill. Unfortunately I'm from Michigan's LP close to Lansing, so it's a bit far to go. I'm not a skiier or snowborder myself, although I've never really had the chance to try it.
Ha ha, you are a "troll!" Suicide was my first 70 meter during my career. We called them 70, before they rated jumps by "P" unstead of by "K"...familiar with the measuring of hill size? P point is the end of the R2 curve...K (or Kritical) is the beginning of the R3 curve, or final transition point in the landing hill.
Haha yep I am! Nope I didn't know that they used to call them that, or where the P point was. I'm still sorta learning about some of the terms and stuff- I just really got into seeing the whole sport after the Torino olympics. Of course I don't see much of it since it really isn't broadcast here in the U.S., and I can't make it to the competitions in the UP. I have to keep up with it on the internet when I can.
My Mom's a 'Yuper' from Bessemer/Ironwood.. we'd come of from IL every 4th of July and Fall would already be starting. We'd go to the top of Copper Peak and it was amazing! Scary but amazing!
hello my name is Ty Anderson i live in Alaska now but my father was raised in ironwood and spent his whole life out in those woods that you see in these pictures so i was just wondering how old they were because now days it looks nothing like that
Why not make a american billionaire cough up some good american dollars and make the hill bloom again. I gues the american skijumpers want to have a hill to get the lift they need, and to train in.

If you are not a jumper, it is a very intimidating and rickety looking jump, as a kid I remember wondering how many people died going off of it. :D
