My favorite Birdie skit ever was one where the show's theme I am pretty sure was education. Her skit had her talking about how she removed her kids from public school & into home-schooling so she could teach them the "finer" (&more important) things in life, like shooting & taxidermy! Lost it at the word taxidermy! Such a hilariously & consistently scary white, conservative Republican housewife, & very likely Southern Baptist. Tracey is was ingenious w/ that character, just as w/ Fern's.
@BenAliGtor I don't understand how this is NOT a comedy skit. What in your opinion makes this different from her other skits on the SAME comedy? Why would Fern Rosenthal be a comedy and NOT her take on a fanatically religious, right-wing southern mother?
@Parker528 What I was in essence saying is that it's so true to form to what those people are all about that it could pass for documentary. Hope that explains my comment.
I just can't help liking Birdie - she really cracks me up. I just realized today that Birdie's hairdo seems to be influenced by an old black and white photo of Farrah Fawcett, who was also a Texan. If I got wrong, that's a hell of a coincidence...
@Homoholic I have no recollection of Farrah in a hairdo like this, but I could be wrong; meaning, the severe way the bottom of BIrdie's hair curls back up in huge curls away from her head. I am attributing hairdo to that & similar hairdos of post WWIII-late 50's and into the 60's that mostly housewives had, in which they would go into a salon the same day every week, having their hair "done" so it lasted a full week, and still easy to take care of and maintain. Just my thoughts.
Thank you for all this info! If you want to look up Farrah's picture I was referring to, it is her high school picture.
I didn't realize it was a fashionable hairstyle in the 60s. I thought Birdie's hairdo might have been inspired by Farrah, another famous Texan. It's very possible I'm completely wrong... ☺
I LOVE Birdie's hair
