Thank you Merriam Webster, viral is a new term & wikipedia is a site that can be changed by anyone at anytime. Viral is probably not even in a dictionary yet. To me, it's something you can watch over and over again and it gains popularity online. It also can be interepted differently depending on the situation since viral videos come from all over the world. Everyone has a different definition of viral video most likely. We didn't win the contest because it was filmed by amateurs right?
I don't think that, man. I honestly believe it was your music rights.
If you won the contest, you definitely would have gone beyond the rights you acquired. EA probably wants to use these videos commercially. Chances are you probably would have had to pay out all the prize money you won and then some if you did win in order to secure the proper rights.
Music rights is a big deal when entering contests like these. You should keep that in mind for next time.
Believe it or not, we actually did obtain the rights to use a few seconds of each track. It was a temporary non-commerical license(i.e. for film festivals). We didn't clean the lens because we were going for a more viral feel to the video. Hence the "viral" contest. We didn't know EA just wanted a commercial, more like your video and the others.
A viral video is a video clip that gains widespread popularity through the process of Internet sharing, typically through email or Instant messaging, blogs and other media sharing websites.
Nothing in there about making your video look like it was done by amateurs.
In terms of music, the rights you really needed was worldwide all media in perpetuity. What would have happened if you won the contest? Can't say it's non-commercial then.
Interesting concept. A couple pointers to help you out next year if you enter again.
- Have a soft cloth handy to clean your lens.
- The rules of the contest stipulated you need to own all rights to materials used. "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" + James Brown make for good drama, but you definitely didn't have the rights to use them. This alone would have prevented your Top 5 inclusion as EA can't legally publish your work without them.
We added the music after we lost the contest to the five poorly created videos that EA selected.

Here's Wikipedia's take on "viral":
