Em manobra para pouso no aeroporto de Newark, o MD-11 da Federal Express tocou na pista e imediatamente perdeu o controle. Ao bater com a ponta de sua asa no solo, a aeronave girou sobre seu eixo, ergueu-se e, em seguida, bateu invertida no gramado adjacente à pista. A aeronave foi consumida pelo fogo, mas por sorte, seus tripulantes conseguiram sair ilesos.
