Conjure one up out of thin air? Push one out like a baby? Buying it doesn't make it like "a toy with life", there's nothing wrong with her choice of words. Maybe you can't buy their affection, but you CAN most definitely buy dogs, since people usually don't give them away for free.

@annalexx Actually I spoke to a vet who told me that when they sit up that helps to strengthen their core which helps with the back. Walking up steps is fine as well. You just don't want them walking down steps or off of furniture (my leaps off the bed which always scares me)

Dachshunds are a breed that can really do "pathetic," can't they!? All of ours had "pathetic" games to try on us -- for treats, for pets, for your spot on the sofa, you name it. They all must be operators!

@widgeonslayer not letting them stand up doesn't stop Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) which is the calcification of the cartilage and is what eventually causes paralysis in many short legged/long backed dogs. ~50% of dachshunds will get IVDD to the point where the they'll need surgery (usually $3-4k) but with a great success rate. My parents mini-d had it almost 4yrs ago and is still running and jumping today.

So cute! I have two dachshunds, a black and tan silver dapple Standard named Jackson, 3 1/2 years old, and Joey, a black and tan Tweenie who is about 2 1/2 years old. I also hate when they whine. Joey will do that too. My family jokes that he has a flat butt, lol, but he will not whine while he does it! He has only fallen over twice with one of us in catching distance. Jackson is the whiner, he will whine for the both of them!

My senior Dachshund Johann used to do the same, but I always picked him up immidiately, or would kneel down besides him and hug him. He passed away December 14, 2010. I took him out of a shelter July 9, 2009. In such a short time in my life Johann taught me so much about how to be a better person, filled my days with overflowing and unconditional love. Filled my heart with so much warmth. He was my first ever best friend.
