What a great selection of vintage pictures you included! This song has always stirred me. Thank you for taking the time to produce and upload this video. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
This is storytelling at its best. Al Stewart may be under the radar of pop fandom but his work resides deeply within those who take the time to listen.
@ Circumpunk - Love this! Most don't believe that ALL suffered on the Eastern Front except Hitler, Stalin and theirs! And, everyone suffered thru WW2, except leaders and theirs!?
This is a great video that will sadly go without much thought for the connection between the song and the pics!?
Patriotism is GREAT (save the land of my mom, dad and kids) but, SO MANY are blinded by false-patriotism for politically-made agendas for and by the wealthy - at all's cost - except those leaders!?
@Circumpunk - We're American - most of my family, including myself, served in our military. After Anzio, my paternal grandad was in a jeep that went over a mine - all were killed besides him. If not for that fateful incident, he wouldn't have been sent stateside where he met my grandma. I suppose that 'some' good things come out of even the worse events!? My grandma's brother was the first American to board an enemy vessel during time of war since the War Of 1812. Check it out.
@jdenitto1966 Yes they were. I'm sorry, I found these images on a Google seach for "Operation Barbarrosa, Partisans", etc.... Maybe you should try partisans. I forget now. My apologise.
@jdenitto1966 - They may not 'actually' be Russian, but, they are Soviet. You can find that picture by Googling "Soviet guerrilla activity in Russia, WWII: 3 women with fixed bayonets."
@Circumpunk Bob Dylan ! American songwriter/singer, anti-war, Woodstock+ era, great poet also. Wrote too much to name here, covered by so many artistes you wouldn't believe it.
@Circumpunk I noticed the comment about governments you've attached, I agree wholeheartedly. Here's another for you "A Patriot must always be prepared to defend his Country against it's Government" written ( I think) by Edward Abbey, American conservationist & author.
@tonymax2000 I have another favorite by Patrick Henry. "The tree of Liberty must be watered from time to time with the blood of tyrants." Hope that doesn't freak you out.
@Circumpunk When it refers to people like Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler etc that's fine & justified. When you're having to put up with petty delusional idiots for a limited period ( Cameron in UK ) then I feel that aiming contemptuous, humerous comments punctures their balloon of self importance somewhat - get under their skin ! It helps if you can get a sarcastic nickname into general circulation i.e. George Osborne-"Boy George", David Cameron-" The Hollow Man". Disdain & general contempt riles them.
I would love to know what Al Stewart's IQ is......I'd say he's a very intelligent guy.....Listening to his many songs are like a history lesson.....The most underrated talent of my time !
I saw Al Stewart perform this forty years ago in Austin, Texas. Still my favorite song about war, as I had relatives killed by both Hitler and Stalin.
Went to a "Concert" (Really a comedy routine) by George Carlin in Portland OR back in the early 1970s. Opening act was a guy with a guitar that I had never heard of.
This song was done with no backup.
Blew me away. "American Pie" style was new type of music.
It's a very moving and memorable song, what saddens me is that humans keep blindly obeying the orders of the monsters that rule us (politicians, despots etc) and the slaughter goes on. Hitler, Stalin, Bush, Blair, Obama et al are just the puppets of the globalist bankers who finance and profit from the carnage. Wake up !!!
@gorlestondoug i know, i wish they would wake up but i have the feeling they wont until its too late. modern technology makes everything 100 times scarier than the days of hitler
I've always loved " The Roads To Moscow ". And, having recently got broad band, I came looking for a You Tube edition. I chose yours. The tears were streaming down my face well before half way through!

"Motherland" statue at the end, WOW I was there at her feet when i was 12 yo two years before I ever heard this song thank you so much for posting these great pics and a classic song !!! from me and my russian heritage >>>LOVE AL STEWART<<<
Jazzing up outside the Fuhrer Bunker on April 20th 2011, I could feel the lifelong Telaportation portal closing behind me back in San Antonio. I realized that they had moved on even before I had ever heard the song. I did get to Seelow Heights though, where "The flames of the Tigers are lighting the road to Berlin..." The Russian combat footage of the river crossing looked like Gettysburg must have.
@Circumpunk What I meant to say was, that I was living the war thru Al Stewarts song that they moved on from 70 years ago. It took going there to realize that!! The one thing that was cool was looking where Germany`s Amelia Earhart landed the plane to rescue the Fuhrer. Also you could see how close the Russians were to the bunker when him and Eva "checked out"...
@Circumpunk Perhaps a better analogy would be dreaming your whole life of going back and making it with the cheerleader from High School... Till you see a picture of her in a nursing home hooked up to a dialysis machine...The war is over... Al Stewart said so way back in `73 much less `45...But just for `ol times sake... "Long Live Germany!"
I have loved this song since the first time I heard it. It never loses it's charm for me. The strong, poetic imagery in the lyrics is so powerful that this is the first version of this song that I've seen on YouTube where the actual images used don't fall flat. You've done a masterful job on this.
Wowsers Geoff me ol' todger. What a friggin brilliant song (beleive it or not I've not heard it before and if I have I've forgotten it). The vid was Ace man ... well done for depicting the mood with such well sourced images. This must've took you ages doing all the timings and such. I particularly like the way you had a pic on a few secs and then zoomed out or in.

A fantastic pictorial depiction of Al's musical journey through this period of history.
You've captured his lyrics so well-the photographs put me right in the midst of WWII.
I can feel the fear, desperation and ending for both sides.
Thank you!
