I noticed that you were sewing it together with a needle and thread, I tried it that way and now I am trying it with yarn on a needle, and it works much better than thread. To do it with yarn you put the needle through the loops on the braid to stitch them together. I found it is much easier to do it this way and a whole lot faster!! Just be careful not to make a bowl shape.

you don't tie a knot you join together two strips and make a T with the third,. Stitch the thrid down and start braiding.

Does it matter what kind of fabric you use?

@purity4all not really, just don't use loose knits that will unravel when you cut them. If you use different types and thicknesses of fabric, you will want to cut the strips different widths. Knits you will want wider (because they stretch), cottons you will want average (they don't stretch much), and then some you will want thinner because they don't stretch at all (like most jean and khaki).

can you make rectangular rugs this way? maybe braid sections and then sew them together next to each other in a reclangular shape. my grandmother buys them, but i want to make one. anyone have any suggestions? thanks! great video ;)

@swason93 I have a rectangular one and it's made of many strips lined up next to each other rather than coiled round. So I guess, instead of one huge plate/twist, you could make around 50 smaller ones of the same size and sew them next to each other. I'm going to try my hand at both types. ^_^

You don't have to braid all of the pieces together. There is a WAYYYY easier way to do this and you only have to use one strip of fabric at a time. Geez maybe I should post a video!

They kind of like braid it together. Please let me know if you can explain this? I am working with African girls in a refugee camp ... they need ways to make money and feed themselves.

i do these but i dont sew and it looks just fine you put a slit in the bottom of your strip and pull the secound strip through its alot faster too!

I used a curved upholstry needle. and my fingers were pretty sore after a few hours of sewing the braids together, but my rug was pretty big. over 5 feet long. i wore rubber fingers (found in office supplies) to keep my fingers from hurting.

this video is great and very helpful but there is one part that was left out that i dont know what to do. when you first start the braiding how do you start it? do you tie a knot? is there a loop? i dont know how to begin it. thanks.

Yep, you just tie a knot. It will be hidden in the coil when you start winding the rug.
