i have an 01 max. Lovely car , new body kit, side skirts, etc. Light mods only. Can anyone who has experience tuning these cars tell me what i can do to the engine to tune it up good to go up against my friends 335i? I respect bimmers but my heart goes to the MAXIMA!
@GIML8AGAIN I smoked a 335i last week from about 60mph to up to 120 mph due to traffic up front with a 03 maxima.The max was stock.The turbo doesn't really help that much while on the run.Only from a stand still could a turbo really be a lethal/menacing weapon.

The 335i is around 1.5 seconds slower in the quarter than a Max, that's a completely different class of speed dude. A turbo doesnt spool up until you reach higher RPM's, top end is where it really kicks in. I'm not being biased, I've owned an '03 Max and I'm on my second STI. The Max is a great car but get real!
@JOHNNYGIX the BMW 335i is 1.5 sec faster than the Max I meant. But youre right about the weight difference. the Max and STI are similar but the Nissan feels like a slug with its soft suspension and seats that dont support you in the turns. Especially the leather ones
I have an 03 Maxima 6 Speed and stock vs stock I have pulled on a 05 WRX similar to what this video shows... now if it's an STI... that's a whole other story. That Max would have to be heavily tuned to pull on an STI like that.

Just cause you can make a car do something doesnt mean that it is logical. If I wanted to drag race its possible to have a really fast STi, but it would take alot of money and work. Its alot smarter to start with a muscle car. But if i want to run time attacks at a circuit track, I can have alot more fun and get alot more performance with less aftermarket work with the same STi...my point is that maximas are nice cars, but its not a smart choice for either use.
Just saying, you can make any car excell at anything you want it to. All it takes is some deep pockets. Cars dont have to stay stock from the factory, otherwise there wouldn't be companies making lots of money selling you aftermarket stuff for your car. Most races on the street are from a roll, not from a stop because any car that makes any power, is going to spin on the street from a dig. Therefor, all the real cars out on the street usually go from a roll, like in my videos.

02 maxi's run mid 7's 0-60, sti is typically right at 5 seconds.

I have a '97 maxima GLE and I love her. She treats me well with 150k miles on the clock. 4th gen maxima's last even longer than the 5th gen's like on this vid, and they seem to last a bit longer. But once they started building them in the states, starting in '04, they went downhill big time in build quality. Maxima's are great daily drivers, but they certainly arent a good platform to modify. get a rwd v8 for that.
It's not just about HP when you race on a roll ,a STI put 300hp on 4 wheels ,and the max 255 on 2 ,I destroy 2005 WRX in my 2002 altima V6 stock automatic on a roll ,but on the quarter mile ,its a different story ,15.2 Altima vs 14.5 WRX ,WRX is a beast on the 60ft !

First of all, it's not a 2005 subaru. The headlights are 2006 style. Probably a 2006 wrx tr. Thats why no foglights. A modded maxima would walk a stock wrx.
I totally agree with you, and the max was probably heavly modded (boltonwise) and the sti was probably BONE STOCK - all you'd need is a DP and you'd whop that vq - i'm partial to maximas for sure, but the WRX line is FAR superrior in quality, performance and looks.. hense the reason 2004 stis are still 25k$

@kevinreid I've actually driven an '03 WRX with bolt-on treatment. Pretty quick, pretty stable at speed, but not too engaging to drive. Not very fun to drive a car that you cant lose control in! No burnouts, no kickin the tail out. Drove an '07 CTSV not too long ago. Wheew, now THAT was a car.

I have a 2000 maxima with only an intake and i smoke wrx's with full exhaust all the time they are slow i useually dont even have to powershift against them you would believe half the cars i have beaten in my car
MESSAGE TO 2002-03 MAXIMA OWNERS...Do the ghetto air box mod(also seal the front of the snorkel). It instantly converts your air intake to a short ram, giving you about 10 more horses, quicker throttle response. Before airbox mod I got 0 to 60 in 6.7secs. Now I get in 5.6secs after mod. Always use 91+ octane gas.
I own an '03 maxima SE 6spd(for sale). Just bought an '07 STI limited. Totally different cars. The maxima handles and accelerates like a turd compared to the suby. Not even a close comparison. Very diferent cars but the maxima is still a good all around performance mid size. The AWD is WAY better than front wheel torque steer.

turbo the maxima and it will be close as hell...theres a few videos on youtube of vq35 maxima with the 6 speed pushing almost 400 horsepower with the turbo
For sure, the VQ is a strong engine. But putting a large turbo or supercharger on a stock NA engine is a bad idea IMO. It would need(at the least) stronger top end internals, lower compression and a very good tune. And that's just the engine. There's the tranny(transaxle) and axles to also worry about. The STI is designed to handle 300hp all day, not the Max. Not saying that it cant be done tho, I think the Max is a strong car
a 2002 maxima 6 speed costs about $7k and a sti is about $25k-$29k, turbo the maxima and youll still have plenty of money left over and will smoke sti all day, not to mention it will last a while with stock internals and if it doesnt through a new engine in it and you still wont reach the price of a sti. lol

My Max did have a shitload of mods and dynoed at 322whp with a 75 shot of N2o and intake,headers,exhaust,Safc tuned, SSIM,Pulley and yes I did spray so I was fken suprised to say the least that the STI kept up. He on the other hand only had Cattback and sometype of raceclutch...

It all depends, but then you are comparing 227hp (02-05)which is actually 170awhp to 255hp plus more torque. Stock wrx's arent that fast, I know because mine used to be stock, but after only 2 grand, I am faster than a stock STI. Maximas aren't bad at all, but they have nothing else going for them than just racing every once and a while on a highway.
Basically it can do anything a WRX can do, carry 5 people, haul cargo to a certain degree, still streetable and can be daily driven, the only thing that seperates the maxima from the WRX is the fact that the WRX has way more potential, and its AWD. The maxima on the otherhand is N/A and FWD. Although the maxima is a much more luxourious car, it really depends on what you want.
Yes, that is basically true, these 02 and 03 maximas were very underrated and they were fast. The technology however is still on the wrx's side due to the drivetrain, awd system and suspension. Maximas are still good cars though.
low fifteens for Max if you are a perfect driver and are at sea level. I could only get 15.5 at 3500 ft with a 6spd '03. But I was keeping up with mustang v8's that night(stock of course).An STI can get mid 13's no problem. A normal WRX is still faster than the Max from a dig but not much faster from a roll on over 60 mph.
You must either have been in a high elevation track. Its proven that the 2k2-2k3 6mt's are capable of low 14's. Probably 13's with better tires. Nealoc187 ran a 14.2@95 in his bone stock 3.0 5mt maxima..if he can do that with 160whp, then a 2k2 with 205whp should be capable of 13's considering its a bit heavier. Most people trap around 97-98MPH stock, so its definately possible to hit 13's.
A stock WRX will get smoked by a 2k2-2k6 6MT maxima from a roll.

@bpunlife yeh...regular WRX is nothing. STI is a challenge. I rode in a 2010 STI and they are nice but seem to have a heavy feel to them.

Most races on the street are from a roll, not from a stop because any car that makes any power, is going to spin on the street from a dig. Therefor, all the real cars out on the street usually go from a roll, like in my videos.

I have a '97 maxima GLE and I love her. She treats me well with 150k miles on the clock. 4th gen maxima's last even longer than the 5th gen's like on this vid, and they seem to last a bit longer. But once they started building them in the states, starting in '04, they went downhill big time in build quality. Maxima's are great daily drivers, but they certainly arent a good platform to modify. get a rwd v8 for that.

It's not just about HP when you race on a roll ,a STI put 300hp on 4 wheels ,and the max 255 on 2 ,I destroy 2005 WRX in my 2002 altima V6 stock automatic on a roll ,but on the quarter mile ,its a different story ,15.2 Altima vs 14.5 WRX ,WRX is a beast on the 60ft !

I do find it hard to believe he kept up with you on the bottle. 300hp at the CRANK isn't much in a 3400lb car with all wheel drive type high end drag. My wrx has heated seats, heated mirrors, heated windshield wipers, sunroof. Even driving hard I can pull out around 20 mpg, and don't forget wrx's are AWD. and I do fit 3 comfortably in the back, maybe not as comfortable as a maxima, but its not awful.

MESSAGE TO 2002-03 MAXIMA OWNERS...Do the ghetto air box mod(also seal the front of the snorkel). It instantly converts your air intake to a short ram, giving you about 10 more horses, quicker throttle response. Before airbox mod I got 0 to 60 in 6.7secs. Now I get in 5.6secs after mod. Always use 91+ octane gas.

I own an '03 maxima SE 6spd(for sale). Just bought an '07 STI limited. Totally different cars. The maxima handles and accelerates like a turd compared to the suby. Not even a close comparison. Very diferent cars but the maxima is still a good all around performance mid size. The AWD is WAY better than front wheel torque steer.

For sure, the VQ is a strong engine. But putting a large turbo or supercharger on a stock NA engine is a bad idea IMO. It would need(at the least) stronger top end internals, lower compression and a very good tune. And that's just the engine. There's the tranny(transaxle) and axles to also worry about. The STI is designed to handle 300hp all day, not the Max. Not saying that it cant be done tho, I think the Max is a strong car

Just to let you guys know the reality is that a Max even with all the bolt ons cannot keep up with an STI. In my video I was running I/H/E/Pulley,Safc,75 Shot that is the only reason I won or else it would have been a raping for me.

Good to see an honest response for once. What did all the upgrades cost you? I was going to put some money into my Maxima but bought an STI instead. Just curious. Must be fun by the way smokin everyone in your sleeper! Nice car.

lol sti my ass, that was not a sti, that was just a regular o 2.0 wrx there is a BIG difference between a wrx sti and wrx if yall mofo know anything about cars u would know that there is no way in hell a fuking maxima will even come close to beating a sti but whatever

I gotta set the record straight for all you guys...
Ok the max is my ride and the STI (yes it is an STI any real enthusiast would be able to tell the difference hood scoop,color,fenders anyways) is my friends. My Max did have a shitload of mods and dynoed at 322whp with a 75 shot of N2o and intake,headers,exhaust,Safc tuned, SSIM,Pulley and yes I did spray so I was fken suprised to say the least that the STI kept up. He on the other hand only had Cattback and sometype of raceclutch...

@gsxrboy391 hahahaha if you knew anything about subarus. you would know that that is an 06-07 year. the wrxs come with 2.5s starting in 06. and just like the guy said hes running a shot. i can believe it. but we also do not know if its an sti or not

from a roll 5.5 gen manual maxima can take STI, but not from a stop because of AWD

Maybe nothing to brag about compared to STI's. But a stock 02-03 6MT maxima run low 14's stock. correct me if im wrong, but isnt that faster then stock wrx's?
I belive this maxima had I/H/E and was spraying a 60 or 75shot.

It all depends, but then you are comparing 227hp (02-05)which is actually 170awhp to 255hp plus more torque. Stock wrx's arent that fast, I know because mine used to be stock, but after only 2 grand, I am faster than a stock STI. Maximas aren't bad at all, but they have nothing else going for them than just racing every once and a while on a highway.

Basically it can do anything a WRX can do, carry 5 people, haul cargo to a certain degree, still streetable and can be daily driven, the only thing that seperates the maxima from the WRX is the fact that the WRX has way more potential, and its AWD. The maxima on the otherhand is N/A and FWD. Although the maxima is a much more luxourious car, it really depends on what you want.

Yes, that is basically true, these 02 and 03 maximas were very underrated and they were fast. The technology however is still on the wrx's side due to the drivetrain, awd system and suspension. Maximas are still good cars though.

200xpdi is wrong, 02-03 maximas had 255hp, which is about 229-230hp to the wheels, with I/h/e can shoot up to 260++ at the wheels

low fifteens for Max if you are a perfect driver and are at sea level. I could only get 15.5 at 3500 ft with a 6spd '03. But I was keeping up with mustang v8's that night(stock of course).An STI can get mid 13's no problem. A normal WRX is still faster than the Max from a dig but not much faster from a roll on over 60 mph.

You must either have been in a high elevation track. Its proven that the 2k2-2k3 6mt's are capable of low 14's. Probably 13's with better tires. Nealoc187 ran a 14.2@95 in his bone stock 3.0 5mt maxima..if he can do that with 160whp, then a 2k2 with 205whp should be capable of 13's considering its a bit heavier. Most people trap around 97-98MPH stock, so its definately possible to hit 13's.
A stock WRX will get smoked by a 2k2-2k6 6MT maxima from a roll.

You said it's proven, by who? Some guy on-line. I'm just being real and not talking shit like so many others. Not knocking the Maxima, I have owned 2 of them and when I read Road&Track and Car&Driver or any unbiased article, they have posted similar times with expert drivers (high 14's stock) Yes I'm at 3500 feet which is why my time is slow.
