  • I'm a big fan of Cecilia! I "discovered" her podcasts and downloaded all 200 of them! Her style is great. She's funny and a great instructor. I'm an intermediate Cantonese speaker and it's next to impossible to find continuing instruction. Cecilia's like a gold mine.

  • she looks like princess diana

  • I'm Norwegian and have stayed in HK for one year. I'm not as good as the Norwegian woman here, but I'm better than those other foreigners:P

  • @anderskhe Hvorfor !? Wherefore speaketh thee the tongue of the barbarians ? lol kidding, I'm from Hong Kong myself. But she literally said "Eg har tre jobber" , Norwegian grammar with Cantonese.

  • i was amazed when she use Cantonese to bargain to the salesperson =-=

  • I think many people overlook the ability to adapt. Its no different from a HKer coming to the US and learning English. It may not be perfect, but give someone 10 years and I'm sure they'll be able to communicate.

  • <3 Cantonese: language with the funniest puns... :D

Also one of the easiest languages to gets lost in translation :/

  • @Vehement00 You can say that again. Pronounce the word "shoe" wrong and you could be saying "yes", "crab" or "vagina".

  • Cantonese should be the world's language.

  • corinna chamberlain! corinna chamberlain! corinna chamberlain!

  • Talk about getting immersed into the language, they all use chopsticks even when it is not part of the language requirement

  • I love elevator music

  • I don't know why for some reason people think Canto sounds super bad, I think it actually sounds cooler than Mandarin sometimes :D

  • What's the big deal??? People come to Australia and no matter where they're from they learn English. What's so strange about someone moving to Hong Kong and learning Cantonese???

  • she has good vocabulary but her accent still have traces of english

  • @TheManGuyDude, Traces of English or traces of Norwegian? She is from Norway!

  • @vangrails Oh sorry, then it's norweigian.

  • I am jealous. How did she learn chinese so well???????

  • I hope she be careful in in shenzhen. haah my cousins always tell me to put the wallet in the front instead back.

  • Wow you are impressive Lady!!!

  • These are 2 different speakers...is this video trying to fool anyone?

well.. it is hard not to discriminate people who speak improper english like you. way to go to pollute the world with your ghetto way of speaking. stop listening to hip hop and go read some book please. learn how to write. it is good for you.

  • 2:35 hahaha she's awesomeeee

  • Comment removed

  • pretty funny..=]

even though some mainlanders dun seem nice plus the corrupted gov... many mainlanders are still pretty honest and nice in nature...

  • i think because we HK people believe most of the kweilo can't and are unwilling to learn Cantonese seriously, that's why we answer them in English just for their convenience.

  • I don't know. Should we write for every video that has a Chinese person, "Chinese person speaking English?" Move into the 20th, much less the 21st century.

  • @toufenhoover

and why would you do that? it's too boring.

  • This Vid is Funny. Cool Analogy on HK Stress.

  • LOL I love her bargaining technique!! So very similar!

  • yess xD

     white person bargaining xD WIN

  • She is hilarious!!!

  • Her Cantonese isn't that smooth actually. I know caucasians who can speak fluent smooth cantonese. But for a foreigner it's impressive already.

  • Her Canto ain't that great (I cringe), but I guess it's impressive.

  • I really like her story, but I'm not totally aware of the traditional characters. Too bad this doesn't have simplified characters. ~_~

  • Pretty impressive...! ^^

  • lool cooool, norwegian too ^^ i live in sweden and im cantonese HIHI

  • @KathriinT oh cool i can speak canto too and i am malaysian chinese,i speak mandarin better. Anyway, hows life in Sweden? i always want to work there? may i know if one can survives soley on English language ONLY? and is it hard to apply for working Visa or ome sort? thank you for ur answer.

  • @Tommydudez You probably can survive there soley on English. I know people who only speak English, get by, have jobs, have friends in countries like Denmark and Sweden. Most Scandinavians I have ever come across master the English language at the back of their hands. They seem to have more awareness in learning other languages, unlike most British in the UK.

  • nice! rarely seen skill

  • AWEsome! i love white people who speak chinese..esp canto (oinly because that's what i know xD)

  • So much better than mandarin. Mandarin is the white man Chinese. Its so fucking easy to learn. No versatility. Adopted because its soo easy to learn.

  • lol that was the point. it reduced Chinas illiteracy rate to very low levels.

  • lol i guess you're smoking something

  • Except for learning how to read and write...Honestly, in Chinese, that's probably the hardest part cuz there are just so many unique characters. Okay, maybe not the hardest, but the longest anyways.

  • @plwun48 I agree with you

  • i think it is sometimes good that they speak with their own accent... so that they can retain some of their originality.. it 's cute anyway!! very good skill

  • Strong accent and not so fluent... her vocabulary is a bit limited. But anyway, her cantonese is good ^^

  • Well, her English has an accent, so her Cantonese might as well too. Grammar is more important than accent.

  • It's great to hear Caucasians fluent in any Asian language. Good on her for being so good!

But since her accent is quite strong, I'm not sure I like that she teaches Canto though....

  • super skilled.

  • Still a pretty heavy accent. However, her Cantonese is understandable and its better than most white people speaking Cantonese (but Sharon Balcombe and the Australian have native pronunciation, the videos are at the side).

  • chee sin por ah XDDDDDDDDDDD.

She got great sence of humor.

  • Life is good, god bless you.

  • I take that back. The video finally loaded, i see my accent is way better than hers. you can still detect a foreign accent in her, whereas once when playing CS on a China server other players commented I spoke good English. I said but of course, I'm Caucasian American, they all laughed and said if I was white then they're God...... didnt believe me...

Here's a hint: If they still tell you you're Chinese/Cantonese is good, then it's still just ok. If they stop complimenting! Then you got it.

  • nice. I can do that with Mandarin myself but my Cantonese though same on the accent lacks the vocab. I'd kill for a Norweigian passport......

    Vikings!

  • Your Cantonese is Amazing, I'm kind of a Banana Chinese living in U.S., but I still understand Cantonese and Fuzhou. Good Vid!

  • awesome!!!

  • I want speak cantonese like that.please help me

  • i luv the cantonese language!

    it sounds so cool.

  • where did that girl with the green shirt say she was from?

  • I want to meet this lady! She is my hero.

  • Her accent is a bit off though.

  • Actually, it's true that if you look caucasian, you are treated differently (this can be either good or bad, bad in her situation) even if your nationality reveals otherwise. This doesn't happen in European countries. Now who's the racist here?

  • some of them speak Mandarin but not canto...= =

    so weird~

    i heard Mandarin is easier??

  • well i guess canto might be harder cuz it has 9 tones

  • in normal daily speech we just use like 6, and with the younger generation being all lazy and stuff people use about 5 and just sort of slurr the words.

  • God bless her. Good documentary series.

  • admire Ah-Sai for her outgoing personality and street knowledge in China. Her Cantonese? Her accent sounds more natural and comfortable after a few minutes. Ah-Sai has a gift for Chinese languages.

  • Very nice, the white accent is almost unnoticeable, like 1%. She speaks with the feminine version of Cantonese too, sounds appropriately girly (though she's a tiny bit older). That's something you don't learn easily.

  • haha, "maybe if they weren't so damn annoying I would buy something from them."

  • Wow you can speak cantonese

  • how...i wish i can talk like that...even 1/10 as gud will satisfy me

  • She is so sweeeeeeeeet!!!!!

  • She is still so

  • I'm very proud of her ,how to speak and learn new culter.I'm very impress

  • very nice!!

  • she's good.

  • Hahha, the other people suckkkkkk.

  • accent!!!

    but it's pretty damn good.

  • this was great.. what an awesome lady!!

lots of energy, lots of fun. you can just tell she's an inspirational person to be around.

  • wow i hear the accent...but this is just amazing~!!! wow shes good!!

  • I'm so inspired by these people because they are making effort to fully adapted to the Cantonese culture and language. She craked me up when she was able to use local slangs and able to cook authentic Chinese food. Coming to America when I was twelve years old, I also learn how to assimilate into the American culture too. Therefore, all these foreigners in this documentary series earned my full respect and I hope I could able to have a conversation with them the next time I'm in Hong Kong.

  • Haha, her accent is fun !

But honestly, she's good at it

  • endelig! norske er snakker kinesisk!

  • Er du norsk? Eller har du bare lært det? O_o Fordi... Øh. Ja. xD

  • haha i speak crappy norsk

  • Haha, you just had one word too much.

I live in Norway, so I'm a native speaker. I'm Chinese, too, so... Hehe.

  • Are there a lot of Chinese people in Norway or are you a very visible minority? It seems that Chinese people have immigrated to many countries, especially Canada and the US...I've heard of Chinese people living even in Peru, but I've never thought of Norway!

  • Well, there aren't exactly a lot of Chinese people here, but it's not like there are no Asians in Norway, 'cause there are. I think Canada and the US has people from all over the world anyway, and the countries are huge.

  • My friend, I'm sure you know Asians comprise what 1/5 of the Earth's population. China has roughly 1.3 billion people; that's 1billion more than US! Given the high rise of immigration, historical context and various external forces, there are lots of Chinese people living in other countries. This includes even the most unthinkable countries like Norway. Check out the countries demographic statistics.

  • Yes, 130 mil Japanese, 50 or so mil Koreans, 80 mil Viets, not to mention Thai, Mongolian, Cambodian, Phillipino etc etc...

  • By today there are roughly 10,000 Chinese people living in Norway.

  • lol funny

  • has an accent but very good.

  • lol the two ppl at the end speaking cantonese haha. wow that girl has been in hk for 9 years and just started learning cantonese 2 months ago? lol. The guy did better then the girl.

  • LOL "$20 leng lui" wow she even barters like a real hker hahahaha

  • LOL i watched it just to hear that line

  • oh, i listen to her podcast in itunes these days, really fun...

  • she went to my school!

  • lol cantonese is a lzay langauge :P

  • whys that?

  • ho kwei k ying ah!

  • Her accent's a bit off but she's good!

  • Insane, she's good. I wonder how she's so good.

  • wonder how my parents would react if i brought home a white girl and she spoke cantonese like this women.. that would b well funny! my search begins! lol

  • LOLZ, are you chinese? I know my parents would be like "AH????? lay sick gwong doong wah??? ?___? Wwahhh, ho-sai-lay ahhhh" ROFLROFL...
