soupy was great i was only 12 years old in 1965 [born 1953] he made me laugh back in the day always rush home from school [forgetting all the pretty girls who like me ..beatle hair at the time] just to watch silliesness at it best .....................R.I.P.SOUPY MISS U&THANKS 4 THE LAUGHTER IN 1960S
This was supposed to be a kiddie show, but my dad would sometimes watch it and laugh with me...Dad got a kick out of the more adult humor that I didn't catch. All in good fun and a lot of viewers in all age groups loved his show. Todays television is so lame....RIP, Soup.
Soupy, thank you for everything you gave us. i understand howard stern was very sadand yhat in reakity he held him in,and sd thay soupy was 1 of his idols.he said that robin was the tomend the relationship aftr the piono bit .u know when howard cut the sTRINGS on soupys piano .
I was in the studio many times during the show, and always had a great time. Because the show had no audience, Soupy would always make reference to the crew. I was there because my father was the sound effects person on the show. Soupy once took out the blanks that were used in the gun that made the sound effect when the pie was thrown, and it was hillarious to hear just a "click" when the pie was tossed. I remember most of the crew as well.. RIP Milton
@rty1955 Rty, who was the crew member with the high pitched laugh? It's best heard during the part 2 of Pookies's Fairy Tales. Got an e-mail it is Lenny Messina, the floor director.
@joechristopher2 Most likely it was Lenny. He was always picked on. He was such a good natured guy. He was the floor manager standing right next to the cameras wearing his headset and half glasses. He was a short man and always smiling. Lenny worked on almost every show at Channel-5. He was very well liked by every director for his personality. The people that were on the floor were the camera operators, floor manager, sound effects person, and talent.
Wow, I remember his LA Show in 1978 I think and his words of wisdom one time was, "You show me a parakeet in a blender, and I will show you shredded tweet." LMAO, his humor was and always will be priceless.
A bobby comes home after work and finds his wife in the bedroom with 3 guys. He says:"Well ello ello ello!" His wife looks at him and says:" Well aren't your going to say hello to me?"
Urban Legend has it that one of his Soupy Sez bits was...He drew the letter F and said"This is not the letter F. It's a K. So when you see F you see K" I never heard him say that.
Hey kids in Generation Y and X..This man was children's television. There were no Sponge Bob in those days nor Miley or Demi. They should take lessons from this guy. The children entertainers back in the day entertained and had some imagination. RIP Soupy...
@Gaylel1 Interesting to see these clips. To those of us born in the 1960's, we only remember him as the guy from '70's game shows. And he was the act on Ed Sullivan immediately preceding the Beatles first appearance.
RIP Soupy. You entertained us after school and passed away just a few blocks from where we watched you in the Bronx. They don't make shows or entertainers like that anymore.
I loved his 1959-1960 show. I was 8 years old and he always told you what we were gonna have for lunch next week. That gave me time to get mom to make it for me. Usually something simple: A banana, PB&J sandwich, chocolate milk, etc. He would have his lunch WITH YOU! Of course there were their sound effects for each kind of food as he took a bite, and we'd continue our lunch while he went on with the show. I have nothing but great memories of him and his show. RIP Soupy.
I wish I could see clips of Soupy's old 1959-1961 show.I used to watch it avidly and was sad that his later shows weren't shown in my neck of the woods.
RIP Soupy Sales. We appreciate you for creating funny moments in television history. You were also the first voice actor of the Nintendo character, Donkey Kong. He voiced the stubborn gorilla on the CBS cartoon series, Saturday Supercade.
for those of us who grew up in those times this was where we got our sense of humor and double entandre(sp). i'm happy that someone had the foresight to record this. he will be dearly missed.
In the 60's, in the NYC area, we would hurry home from school to see Soupy. Later, we found out the high school kids and teachers were doing the same. Best show ever and the participation and comments of the crew made it seem like you were involved and "in" on the inside jokes.
Wow, lost another piece of my childhood, but thankful that I had the opportunity to watch his show with my siblings on Channel 5 in New York. Good times, good times...
Looking back on the shows, I see it was just as much for adults as kids and his presence shall be sorely missed. RIP, Soupy Sales...
I feel so sad...another great entertainer gone from the greatest generation. I grew up watching him in Detroit. His show started there and I loved all those pies in his face. My deepest symathies to his family and friends. Rest in peace Milton Supman! :)
Note to Howdyhand-: Soupy was SUSPENDED for two weeks, in late 1965, for supposedly soliciting money from kids, after improvising a rant after finding money in an envelope a viewer had sent him. He went off the air after that, in late '65 or early '66. How do I know this? I saw every show Soupy did on WNEW in 1964 and '65.. I saw the Christmas time show he did that got him in trouble- live. I knew he was kidding, and I was only 13. Kids are apparently smarter than t.v. executives.
it was "those little green peices of paper , in your daddy's wallet the ones with presidents on them!" LOLOLOL
I really loved listening to Soupy on the radio between Imus and Howard Stern, back in the 80's on WNBC! He was so silly, clean and funny,, I once sat in a parking lot until I stopped laughing at his silly sweet jokes! I couldn't drive I was laughing so hard ,had tears coming down my face. I forget what he said, but It was always good.
He also said ,"If you wake up feeling Grumpy and Dopey, you must be Snow White", and "Don't bite your nails- especially if you're a carpenter", and "Girl who eat sweets take up two seats".
If anyone on prime time were as funny as he was, I'd watch. But fart jokes don't appeal to me.
Premiered as Lunch With Soupy on ch. 7 in Detroit about 1954? or 55. What a funny show. My favorite was Willie the Worm the hypochondriac worm that lived in a house trailer (complete with venetian blinds) on the table - always coughing and hacking and complaining. "Do Not Touch" was the first thing I ever learned to read! This is the later nationally televised version - there is no gingham check table cloth on this set.
