um, i'm sure this train was at a much better at 80 mph, than regular trains doing 80 mph, becuse of the rockets,,,,who in the fuck was this trying to impress because of the rockets? (besides idiots) was this film made during the 'convoy' trucking years?
It didn't look like the locomotive was moving any faster than it would on it's own power, so why ruin a locomotive when they could've just loaded a hopper car to the same weight as a locomotive and rocket propelled that instead?
for anyone thats interested ..... modern diesel locamotives can accelerate from 0 to 90 in about 30 seconds or about a half mile of track ... sandia has 10,000 feet for thsi type of testin .... so they never needed the rockets ... just put some diesel in the tank and fire it up.
THE ONLY REASON THEY USED ROCKETS IS NOT RELATED TO WETHER THE TRACK WAS SHORT OR THE ENGINES SUFFICIENT TO GET THE TRAIN UP TO 80MPH….. … SANDIA HAS A DEDICATED FACILITY FOR STRAPING ROCKETS ONTO SHIT AND DESTROYING IT …. THAT’S ALL THEY DO … SO THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED GO TO THE WEBSITE
When did the Mythbusters start working for Sandia?
BTW, if you want to wind a locomotive up to 80 mph, your choices are to build several miles of track, or strap rockets to the thing. Gonna cost a lot either way ... I'm betting they had the rockets on hand, or got them for free from the obsolete Nike program.
@uswine The rockets are also meant to simulate the momentum of a fully loaded train. An unloaded train has several orders of magnitude less energy than a loaded train. Adding the rocket can help to transfer a larger amount of energy throughout the collision than the unloaded train engine alone.

@jpdemers Yes I agree ... had the rockets laying around from decomissioning nike ajax air defense system ... just somthing to do for fun under the auspice of real science
I'm pretty sure that the reason they used rockets was because it was the most cost effective way of getting the velocity the needed to conduct the test properly
@Dan454 It has nothing to do with cost effectiveness....a train doesn't go that fast normally. They were trying to simulate absolute worst case scenarios. Test the container to beyond the limits of what it would ever have to endure in real life.
@hzuiel....... It has everything to do with cost effectiveness, if it CAN. And in this case it CAN. Can you tell me a more cost effective way to get a locomotive going 80+ mph so that they can OBVIOUSLY test the container "beyond the limits of what it would ever have to endure in real life," I thought the fact that they were testing the container supposedly beyond what should truly occur, was a givin. I guess the mistake I made in my initial post on the topic was, not mentioning the obvious.
@Dan454 Okay I guess we're actually agreeing, nvm. I should have looked at your wording more closely. Yes rockets are the most cost effective way to get a train to that speed. I was just saying that the experiment has nothing to do with cost effectiveness. In order to ensure public safety they needed to thoroughly test those containers, no matter what it costs.
@rjones6801 ... u guys are whacked.... trains come with engines that take them to over 80 easily .... there in the wide open desert with many miles of track criss-crossing the area, besides it’s not that expensive to lay track ...especially in the mid 70's the time of this video ....it’s a semi-automated process ...regardless i would ague the already had loads of abandoned track on the proving grounds
It does depend on the track conditions which can range from FRA-mandated 10 mph to 79 mph (you see much of the 79 mph operations in the plains and western states where its largely flat ).
If you are interested here are some of the classes for freight train operations:
i'm pretty sure there's other ways to get a train going 80mph than rockets...
i wonder if they ever thought about turning the train on and maybe hitting the accelerator? that might have been too expensive and time consuming though.. better just rig up those 6 rockets
why do they have to used rockets because realy you dont have to experiments have been done like this without the use of rockets. I think these people must just like the idea of a rocket train.
@supressorgrid Why do people give thumbs up to retarded comments? Obviously there was no plutonium(the majority of reactor fuel is uranium anyway) nor any other nuclear material in the test container. Plus there are obvious reasons why this test was conducted. So obvious in fact that I don't feel the need to explain them. If you honestly are dumb enough to not understand, please do nature a favor and remove yourself from the natural selection process before you pass on your moron chromosome.
The key speed to reach would be 88 miles per hour. That way, the container remains where it is while the train goes either forward or backward in time.
they are trying to think of the worst thing imagnable but still the track like thedealer456 have said that the tracks are short so but still that thing held that much power so it is in good shape and it ofcourse live up to what it is made for
tracks cheap and they have semi-automated equipment to lay it down.... the military test sites are covered extensivly with track for all sorts of payloads ... including an air breathing nuclear reactor powed train (actually a prototype missles on a train sled for testing -Project Pluto).
Also while the C5 is big its not big enought ... looking at GE Evolution Engines they weigh in at 450,000 pounds and are too big in both height and width to fit into the cargo hold paletized
I doubt that the decision to attach rockets to the train was driven by insufficient track length. The fact that they had a train engine available to use would indicate that the track already existed and was attached to some other mainline track. Train engines are mammoth beasts .... when have you ever seen one transported on a highway via a truck. Its just not done... you want a train engine ... you run a track to get it. The test and any reasons to do it the way they chose to is absurd.
Best moment IMO: "... the test that simulates one of the worst possible situations such a container might encounter..." followed by the test description.
