  • I always thought Blue Peter had something to do with poor blood circulation.

  • 1:30 uses fake laughter so as not to scare the children!!

  • Val should have put the bucket on the other end of the elephant.

  • Funniest thing ever - I love the way that by the end of the clip, John Noakes and Peter Purves don't even try to be polite, they just point and laugh at the poor guy lying in a puddle of elephant wee!

  • Absolutely hilarious!

  • A STAR

  • Who was "Archie!"?

  • @phaasch

I think it's Martin, not Archie. My guess is he's a trainee zoo keeper keeping well out of it while enjoying seeing his boss slipping onto his arse on live tv.

  • . . . hmm . . . according to Peter Purves (on eadt.co.uk) that show went out live!

    Make your own judgements LOL

  • It was originally shown on July 3rd 1969 . . . but, interestingly enough, pre-recorded the day before . . . due to some programme planning rule at the Beeb that week.

  • LOL @ 'You're supposed to be drinking it Lulu!'.

  • lol

  • o dear ive trod right on it

  • 2 people have clearly been dragged through elephant poo and wee

  • What a somewhat jolly video. Nature can be fun for not obvious reasons. Anyway, I'd just like to inform you all of a new business I've started out as a child's party organiser and entertainer. I've got a a couple of videos of me up in action on my channel, and offer competitive rates. I'm good at cheering children up as you'll see. Kids tell your mom and dad there's a man who's fun to be with, advertising on the internet. Thanks all, speak soon.

  • What year was this from?

  • @MeBenHalpin 1969

  • @FaerieCrone Wow that long ago?.

  • Anybody who can keep a straight face from 01:28 onwards is either dead or my ex-girlfriend.

Although the elephant does sound as if she's in distress towards the end of the clip, but she's probably dead by now anyway so it's OK to laugh!

  • @pompeypirate ...one of the funniest comments I ever saw - cheers, made my day lol

  • sooo funny

  • The bit where John Noakes says "Oooh get off me foot!" always makes me laugh!!

  • I know the zoo keeper may not have treated the elephant perfectly, but anyone who puts him down has obviously never worked with heavy animals. They do need some strong encouragement when they are to be moved otherwise they are unmanageable. All in all, the guard handled it well.

  • And this is what happens when you don't take Lulu to Magpie.

  • I hope that baby elephant was treated with kindness, she couldn;t help what she did.

  • We've got something very important to do.

Yeah, Lulu did something very important too - on the floor.

  • Yes, you could see the handler given the infamous 'hook' at the end.

  • So folks, NOW you know why tv presenters don't like working with children or animals. ROLLMAO :))

  • The humor would largely be lost if it occured on todays TV. In fact, they purposefully try very hard to manufacture these kind of incidents now.

  • @97channel Apparently, you haven't seen the kangaroo boxing with the American presentors recently -- it's unrehearsed and it's priceless!

  • This still makes me cry with laughter

  • HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAAAA!

  • which year is this?

  • @georgeslavrov

    1969

  • @MissHarmony1968 thanks

  • This is halourious hahaha

  • Never work with children and animals dear boy.

  • HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • PAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

  • Lmao just excellent. This reminds me of a Beatles parody.

  • "oh dear, ive trodden right in it".

  • did he just get pulled straght though that poo?

  • Comment removed

  • love the find martin idea, that would be fantastic, also was peter purves always just like a stoned 15 year old giggling and saying random or inapropriate things?

  • The Keeper seems really grumpy.

  • Another reminder that in the days before live studio audiences, elephant stunts were a lot safer.

  • notice the gaff hook at the end, very cluel

  • Martin was having non of it! I'd like to think he was some poor bullied assistant just giggling and thinking "yeah, you got yours!"

  • @plamph09 I was just wondering who Martin was and if he actually had a job by the end of the day, thinking exactly the same as you! I think we need to work on identifying what happened to Martin after he stopped laughing. Start a Facebook Page... Where's Martin, or Find Martin or something.

  • The zookeper/tamer is going through hell, poor bloke! He looks like Benny Hill.

    Long Live Elephants!

  • One for the GOP - no offence. This reminds me of the Dan Dare comic adventure and the elephant was - from a Rogue Planet. Honest, Ms Palin. It was sort of zebra marked though - so obviously wasn't from Alaska.

Blue Peter - I keep seeing shock horror - this or that presenter is a - gasp - woman! lol

Subject: posts H Ah worh dah he

Anagram: Hard hat, Shep! Shh! Woo

  • i remember many years ago something like 25-28 years ago watching blue peter

and they had this black object in a dustbin, i remember it as a pyramid but the thing was getting bigger the guy who owned it kept it in an egg cup, then on to a mug then a bucket and when i saw it it was in a dustbin, they said they would go back to this guy in 5 years time and see how big it had got, i never saw it again was i dreaming this or was it an april fools i was about 8 years at the time!!! help

  • And thats what happens if you try and ignore "the elephant in the room".

  • I remember this very well.

We had an old telly with a very small screen & I sat on the edge of the hearth (rearl fires in those days) to watch it.

I laugh so much I trew my head back & my hair caught fire !

It was alright, it just was singed up to my head but I had to have my hair cut really short

  • Mary Whitehouse cried herself to sleep that night with the shock

  • omg thts funny!

  • sooooo funny!!

  • I expect Valerie gave the elephant a good beating off air once she'd cleaned the elephant s*** off her court shoes.

  • The elephant made a noise like a dog at 1:12??

  • i had a fist fight with john noakes over a girl in a bar in hampshire 1981. he was a pretty handy guy but i managed to get the better of him by breaking a bar stool over his back. he didnt get up after that. he was with this right flirty bird and when i got talking to her he got all shitty about it. he was giving me the daggers for an hour or so then came up and was all like "outside" and when he turned to the door i got him with the stool. he lost a tooth if i remember. it made the paper.

  • Blimey....! Do you have any connection with Valerie Singleton that made the papers at the time??;-)

  • LMFAO Martin MARTIN!!!!

  • Don't cry, my sweet, because it will be put

    Into a narrow cage,

    become a joke for mobs,

When salesman blow cigar smoke into its trunk

To the cackles of their girl friends.

  • ahahahahahahaha bleesss! i feel for the man who slipped in the pee :L

  • Being middle class I was forced to watch Blue Peter. Unfortunately it was like the curates egg.

    Jolly good show!

  • ow, get off me foot LOL

  • LOL

  • 1:40 he used a bullhook on a baby elephant on kids tv..?

    nice :/

  • BEST TV MOMENT EVER

  • I know.....this video is hilarious with John Noakes keeping things lively but it

bothered me watching that zoo keeper with Lulu........you could tell she didnt like him ...............I HOPE zoos have changed because I dont agree with them at all....

  • @TheFreddie22 whereas i hope that in the year, your spacebar started working

  • OOH!, Get off me foot!!

    'MARTIN! , MARTIN!.

    lols

  • hahaha thats ace

  • Absolutely hilarious. Blue Peter was normally tightly scripted and rehearsed. I was a regular viewer in the sixties and remember BP with affection. They talk about going to Ceylon and the trips they made were an education to me, a working class lad, who didn't always go on holidays let alone go abroad. The travelogues were often accompanied by a soundtrack of Vivaldi and Mozart, so I was introduced to classical music too. Happy days.

  • This was the one high point amid fifty years of mind-numbing, pretentious, upper-middle class drivel.

  • The elephant made a noise like a dog at 1:12...???

  • It could have been worse. The elephant could have stuck its trunk up Valerie's dress......and sprayed....LOL

  • You absolutely could not make this up. Almost died laughing

  • Whos Martin an why didnt he rescue him?

  • Funny clip, and I feel sorry for that guy trying to handle Lulu. Really shows just how powerful these creatures are. A young one can drag around a full grown man like he's a rag doll.

  • An absolute classic. Bloody hilarious

  • "AHH GET OFF MY FOOT!"

that made me laugh so much.

  • I found a Lulu on an elephant database that was moved from Chessington Zoo to Circus Hoffman in 1970; from there she went to Dublin Zoo, and from there to Belfast Zoo. That Lulu died in 2006. I've contacted Belfast Zoo to see if she was this adorable baby elephant from Blue Peter.

I'm really hoping for a positive response, but you never know. Still, I can't think of any reason why Chessington would have TWO baby elephants named Lulu between '66 and '70!

Fingers crossed for a happy ending.

  • Hi CityPickle I can assure you that poor Lulu died a few days after filming, I was with her at the time, We had to raise her with a "block and tackle" to ease her pain before the vetinary decided that she should be put out of her misery. Of course this was kept out of the public domain Remember this was nearly 40 years ago, I was about 17 yrs old at the time. I am 57 years old now,

  • Thank you, tallslimguy, for this response!

I am sure your facts are straight, but I am intrigued that there is a Lulu on record who was born at Chessington, then moved to Dublin & from there to Belfast -- and only died in 2005.

I am curious to hear what Belfast Zoo will say, but given your account, I fear it will not be good news.

Sigh. The more I watch this, the more it seems that Lulu is despearate to escape the keeper and be adopted by the Blue Peter set. She really seems to hate Alec. :(

  • so did they reply?

  • No response! I'll send another note and see if they do answer. Just curious at this point.

  • LOL you can hear the dogs barking in the background. Beautiful elephant

  • What an adorable li'l girl! I'll never understand how anyone could abuse or slaughter such beautiful and intelligent creatures.

  • My laughter at this clip turned to sorrow when I read your posting tallslimguy. What a shame, such a beautiful creature and thank God they, and other animals are treated better these days...still room for improvement though.

  • All the humour here comes through the hapless zoo keeper, pulled around by Lulu, ineffectually calling out "heel heel" (as if that was going to work!), then losing his dignity entirely by being dragged through the piss onto his backside, all the while calling out "Martin" to some unseen person. We are not laughing at the elephant at all.

  • i love the 'goldie dog' miss him...'sob'....

  • Alec Smith the Zoo Keeper calls out "Martin Martin, but I am sure it was Malcolm who was with him that day.

After filming this Blue Peter show, Lulu was taken back to Chessington Zoo and as she left the horse box which was used to transport her, she slipped on wet grass and fell very bad.She never recovered despite valiant efforts by the Vet and staff, as I say above I was with her when she passed away, It was at this time I realised how cruel the old zoo's were.

  • wat cruel things did they do?

  • I have sent City Pickle an email, but here are some facts.Hi CityPickle I can assure you that poor Lulu died a few days after filming, I was with her at the time, We had to raise her with a "block and tackle" to ease her pain before the vetinary decided that she should be put out of her misery. • So sorry to hear that, didn't realise? So sad and yes agree with you.

  • Lulu's death was kept very quiet and I may be one of the last people around today who was there at the time.

Thank goodness modern day zoo's are so much better than 40 years ago.

  • I'm sorry truly. I know I sent this vid thinking a laugh but when you said, felt terrible. You are truly right animals as well as people have a right to happiness, love and freedom. I'm sorry and I didn't realise? Very best wishes

  • Poor LuLu and all the other animals kept in horrible conditions :-(

  • ????????

  • Simply the funniest ever moment on the TV. I saw it live when it happened and it brings tears to my eyes every single time i see it. Marvellous. Thanks for posting.

  • every time i see this the tears of laughter run down my face its just so funny, the zoo keeper looks mortified when he slips in the poo an wee!!! lol like the elephant has really embarassed him!!!

  • "Ohhh, get off me foot!!" - too funny.

  • lol

  • So funny. I reckon Martin's a trainee and there's no way he's gonna get involved!

  • I remember watching this as a child! And this was one of the few episodes they were recording as it all went out live.

  • I bet they kicked the shit out of that elephant after.

  • Wow I love it. How funny!!

  • Martin

    Martin

  • Excellent, very natural TV and not dull like they usually are!

  • Valerie Singleton maintained her composure throughout. From 1968.

  • Poor Elephant

  • John Noakes was a natural. I was a child back then and he was compulsive viewing. So was Go With Noakes.

  • Very funny.

  • woulda been better if he got dragged through the doo doo

  • do you know I always thought and remembered that he had been cos i member watching it with delight live when I was about 11 so dissapointed but its still probably one of the funniest things I can remember cos it just happened didnt it?

  • who was this mysterious Martin?

  • well i like to think that martin is the elephants

true handler and the bloke holding him is martins

    Boss :-)

  • Makes sense. Never noticed before just how many times he shouts his name. And why does Martin never come? Probably pissing himself laughing off-camera.
