I don't understand why San Marino is even still trying. How can one team just be...so...incredibly bad that it can't manage to win anything? It's just unreal. It can't be possible.

@Mythically Well San Marino has only 30.000 citizens (and just half of them are men at any age)... How can they win ant game? Of course they are trying, as a proud and independent nation.

And still, San Marino has the extraordinary record of scoring the quickest ever World Cup goal (after 9 seconds, in a 1-7 qualifying defeat against England in November of 1993). So, their place in World cup history is duly secured!

@Farerets Well, of course, don't get me wrong. It's the same story with countries like Andorra, the Faroes (which only have a bit more people yet are doing way better) and Liechtenstein. But if you become a member of FIFA, knowing that you can't perform that well, isn't it just asking for self-humiliation?

I guess for each their own, I just feel pity at times when I see scores like 10-1 against San Marino (for instance), especially because we (Netherlands) will face them soon.

@Mythically Self-humiliation, I don't think so. As a tiny nation, you always know that you are likely to be condemned to defeat, often a heavy one, in most matches. But there is always a hope that once you can produce a sensation & shock the world. Just look at the Faroes - with 49.000 people they beat Austria, Lithuania, among others, & drew Scotland (twice), N.Ireland, Bosnia, Slovenia & again (!) Lithuania and Austria.

San Marino is weaker of course... But just google Massimo Bonini ;-)

@Farerets I guess you have a point, but it's just the way I see things. Small nations have little chance of proving themselves, obviously, but why, of all things, would you choose football then? Wouldn't it be wiser to pick some other sport to try to excel in?

@Mythically Well, simply because football is a King of all sports and even much more than a sport... It's also a way of putting a small country at the world map. Who would known about Faroes, if not football? The Faroes currentrly have one of the best swimmers in Europe, but who cares? People love football, not least in tiny countries, where they stay united around their national team, no matter results. Just look at Uruguay - it is a country of only 3 m people, but football is everyting there!

There are FAR worse national teams in Asia, Central America and Caribbe, Oceania and Asia. For a 30000 population country that plays the European giants, San Marino don't do so bad. They are the best worst national team in the world, deserving respect for their efforts.

San Marino is a nation with a population of only 31,000 persons, so it is normal that they have a low-level team. But they are a sovereign country and have the right to have their own football team. They play for love of football, not for money, and everyone must pay respect for them. Maybe for you is important only the result and you would feel shame to lose all the matches you play, but they are proud to represent their country, doing their best, and these are the real sportsmen!

For qualifiers of Euro 96, 15 teams were seaded bottom (and 5th) pool, there were only eight groups, so some bottom seaded nations ended in the same group.

Un paese con un alto tasso di disoccupazione, analfabetismo, criminalità, corruzione; con un governo che fa le leggi per interessi personali e che va avanti a decreti leggi chiedendo la fiducia, non è forse un paese del 3° mondo?
