I agree with so many others... on their own merrit, I choose Ryan.. throw in the band backing from Wilco and Tweedy inches ahead. I realize the fence is a precarious place to sit, but its how I feel.
Jeff/Wilco by a mile. They have an experimental flair that works, and that Ryan can't touch. Ryan is very prolific and tries to be something different on most of his records, but it's all really a little 'same-y'. Wilco's albums are unique statements that progress with each new one, certainly through Ghost and arguably to the present day. also solo Jeff acoustic: all the songs are memorable, distinct entities. Ryan doing the same thing would have the tunes kinda run together.
Wilco can do things that Ryan Adams will never be able to do because he is too self centered to pull it off. Jeff Tweedy is a genious song writer who is only made better by his awesome band. And Nels Cline can kick both of their guitar pickin' arses anyday. But, he's on Jeff Tweedy's team.
I tried to get into Wilco years ago, I just didn't like it and didn't get it. I discovered Ryan about 6 months ago and I now own everything he's ever done. Ryan is amazing although I have nothing against Wilco. Ryans music just speaks to me more.
why compare these two? i like tweedys songs better (if you really need to know..)

So excellent... And I have to weigh in on the conversation:
Milk for babes, meat for grown-ups. I'll take Jeff Tweedy/Wilco.

both are great. But Ryan is much more derivative. Jeff is more abstract and original.

jeff, that shouldn't even be a question.

"Both awesome bands with strong willed, drug addicted lead singers. You decide "tubers"! Who's better: ryan or jeff?"
You're a fucking tabloid asshole.

Ryan Adams is a quirky, talented dude with some scruffy charm. Tweedy is a genius.
No comparison.

I agree. I do like them both, in different ways.

I really like them both.
I don´t really get why people compare Wilco vs RA & the Cards all the time... they are not even that similar anyway.
