Seems as if the drummer came off the downbeat of the 1 (when the vocalist entered ),off the upbeat of the phrase instead of the downbeat and that is probally why he and Rocco smiled at each other..Those type of grooves don't always work coming in or off the 1 in a funk type situation. Jazzy Funk, yeah but with a vocalist in this band the 1 needs to togather with the bass, theTower of Power way, strong one the 1, grace or adlibbed after ..just my opinion..

You mainly need to mute your notes properly with your left hand.

The tone will come right after that. 16ths are too many and tone gets muddy if you don't mute them. I believe he made this video playing a Fernandes bass.

That's Russ McKinnon on Drums. I saw Rocco and Russ do a clinic in my town when Monster on a Leash came out. Both amazing. Russ was great, but Dave Garibaldi is greater.

Having seen this band live twice, once with this singer, I can tell you that this video does not even do them justice. Rocco inpsired me to be a bass player. It took me nearly 6 months to get "What Is Hip" down. After that it was pretty easy. T.O.P is still the hottest horn band on the face of the earth.
