Remember, it's based on performances AT WORLD CUPS. Of course BOD gets a mention in any list of great centres, he doesn't come close to Horan in RWC performances. '91 against New Zealand and '99 against S. Africa he dominated. Though they were semis, they were the toughest games Australia played in those two winning campaigns. Phillipe Sella played brilliantly against Australia in the '87 semi. Umaga and BOD have never stood up like that.
Tim Horan inside & Philippe Sella outside for me. The perfect mix of pace, power & guile. Though there are a lot of great centres that could be put in the mix as some of the other comments suggest.
O driscoll would be in with a shout.. If he has a good autumn series he is in with a shout of world player of the year..Great 6 nations goods lions tests.... you'd never know...
Yeah his natural position is 12, is what I meant. Different players. De Villiers defensively and as a team player is better, but Nonu is an explosive finisher. Needs to be more commanding in taking responsibility though. O'Driscoll is the best 13 today, without a doubt. Should have had him in there. I like Berrick Barnes at 12, think he has a great future. Just hope injury doesn't ruin him. Looking forward to the game tomorrow. It will tough against you lot, very tough. Enjoy the match!
I rate Jean de Villiers as the best centre in the world at the moment. That's why I'd select him in his natural position. He's quick & smart - ideal for 12. Nonu is explosive & has amazing strength. SA hav long used strong players at 13 - so maybe that's why I'd select him there. Barnes may well become great.. if he can overcome playin for such a crap side. BoD is good, but would be on my bench. He is in the mold of JdV, but just not as good.
i'm really sorry but where the fuck is that absolute magicain who has made a mockery of so many defences [and attacks].i'm talking about Brian o'Driscoll.
well you might not have seen it, but he is rather aggressive (and yes there is a place for aggression in sport, especially a contact sport) however he often does it in a dangerous way and doesnt hesitate to throw a punch which is of course a yellow offence, and when caught he often whines to the referee. as i said before you may not agree at all
In almost 8 and a half years of international rugby he has been issued with the grand total of 2 yellow cards obe in the 99/00 Six Nations and 1 in the 03/04 Six Nations. If he has ever thrown a punch it was in the defence of himself or another player. He most certainly does not whin to the ref... If u want to talk about thugs why not mention Martin Johnson... Or you could metion what the all blacks did to him on the 05 lions tour.. or the broken jaw against Bayonne.
the same applies to his club rugby.. I mean he is our captain for a reason. Im not saying he is perfect.. but i think you may be mixing him up with someone else
Kinda agree on that. BOD is a very good player, even great sometimes. But in Hcup I've seen him doing really bad things in the ref's back several times. And he was not penalized of course. That's what stoke me. I think that's a real pity for such a talented player.
The answers are surprising only because the question specifies 'centre combinations' not individuals. Philippe Sella's brilliance aside, I don't think you could really split Tim Horan and Jason Little as a 'centre combination'. But then I am biased.
"Never passed the ball"....How the hell did the Underwoods got so many tries? They didn't pluck the ball out of thin air, and they CERTAINlY didnt get the ball from Carling.
Growing up watching Guscott is the single influence on my playing and appreciation of running rugby...(he was the only one in England that seemed to run with the ball at that time).
Jeremy Guscott never passed the ball?!? What a load of bollocks.....his passing was what set him apart from that block head of a captain Will Carling. There will never be a center from England with as much natural talent, vision and speed that Jeremy Guscott had throughout his career.
what you talking about? jamie 'lantern jaw' noon and mike 'fat and unfit' tindall are brilliant! nah but i think your right guscott was talented, its just a shame that as a commentator he's is very blinkered
absolutely no doubt....that's the correct choice

Horan and Sella. A wise choice by the panel and the two best I've seen in their positions since I've been watching the game.

horan is the best centre ever. he was the perfect player-slick attack, distribution and creative skills, plus he had the best defence

I'd have gone for Bunce and Phillipe Sella. Horan was great but from watching the game Bunce just seem to put in more work.

Tim Horan, no doubt at second five. Phillipe Sella at centre, easily! Buncey would have been good too.

Jamie Roberts and Brian O driscoll best combennation
thekidfrom94 2 years ago
12) Horan
13) Umaga
Would have chosen Danie Gerber at 13, only he never played in a RWC.
At the moment the best current pairing would probably be:
12) Jean de Villiers
13 Ma'a Nonu
With Jaques Fourie and BoD very close behind.

He can't be cos both Horan and Jean de Villiers are better than him. So he would have to move to 13.
