It's often difficult to know if someone is merely simplifying for an audience or simply doesn't know enough about a subject. Present day Italians don't speak Italian because the Romans conquered them and made them speak Latin. Latin was one dialect that rose to prominence...just as Standard English is merely one dialect that became powerful for socio-economic (not linguistic) reasons.
@Deogol16 - Of course it was socio-economic reasons. How does a language rise to prominence for "linguistic reasons"? Except for suggesting a language could somehow become popular for pure aesthetic beauty, it's gonna be political and economic forces!
About the Norman invasion: its interesting that all our words forour animals alive our anglo-saxon eg Cow. But all the meat ones are are Old Freanch, Beef( beof) . Obvioulsy cos the peaseant English farmed them and Norman nobles ate them.
@madbob73 he did mention the Jutes from southern Scandinavia (aka Danish). Overall this is a really dumbed down lecture, but informative and entertaining nonetheless. I know you commented over a year ago, so sorry for replying so late :P

He said the word "just," but it doesn't come from Anglo-Saxon roots, it comes from Latin "justus."
