What Bear Grylls does is docuDRAMA... he's not actually "surviving" in the wilderness, but rather recreating what kinda sorta looks like it. Some of it is just plain wrong too (and perhaps dangerous if people try to emulate it). His show is more exciting on a superficial level, but upon closer inspection it's not at all "HOW IT WOULD REALLY BE". SurvivorMan (Les Stroud) is the real deal, and somewhat more of an acquired taste. Reality often is.
TV stations have their share of responsibility for deaths of people who die trying to imitate Bear Grylls, unless they clearly mark the show as a fake, cause it is FAKE. Bear Grylls himself might be a nice man but what he does has very little to do with survival. Most of his actions are exactly opposite to what should one do in survival situation. While his show might be entertaining, it hasn't any educational value. Go for Ray Mears or Les Stroud if you wanna learn something...
Bear Grylls is a better survival expert, a better human being and he actually packs out a venue unlike this guy who has about 13 fans in the room hahaha !!

i like the way les does his show all on his own with bear he,s different but people say about the stunts he pull,s ,their not stunts their skill,s that people don,t know ,like halo jump i,ve done this many times myself there,s alot more in it than jumping out of a plane ,bear broke his back in three places and 18 mths in pain give the man some respect and being x sas you should give him alot more ,

Most ppl would consider survival as the long term process in which u endure the elements as long as possible until rescue. In that case u'd want to minimize risk of any kind, thats Les. Bear has skills which allow him to pursue a completely different type of survival approach, with higher risk, to ensure as quick a rescue as possible. Both methods are fine, but shouldn't b compared. You know what...Les seems like a really genuinely nice guy. Definitely has a passion for this stuff, and I think that really sticks out in a whorish popularity ridden TV network. I got the utmost respect for this guy.
I prefer les stroud cause his show is more real. he has no film crew to help him and keep him company. he just has himself which is how so many people stuck in a survival situation wind up. he teaches you more in a show and travels more like an ordinary survivor would. not like bear grylls who seems to be moving like he is trying to avoid a enemy from capturing him. les stroud can't get help from a camera crew like bear can.
First of all this is all opinionated, and my opinion is the LES is boring and such a drag to watch. Yea he knows how to survive in a place for a week but who wants to be stuck in the wild that long. Bear shows you what to do to get out and stay alive. Bear beats Les 9 out of 10 times all day!!!

Les does all the camera work himself and that's super impressive, but normally what he does is he just makes a shelter and just waits and most of the time hes just in one spot until the 7days are over. Bear keeps moving and keeps going constantly making shelter and showing different ways of getting water and food.Les may be alone and that my be harder for him mentally, but Bear is the better survivalist

@ArrowSmith95 dumbass. you are using the shows to compare the men. clearly both shows are quite different despite the survival theme. bear creates extreme situations and purposefully exposes himself to danger to show what you can do IF you had to in order to get rescued ASAP. les attempts a long term survival quest where maximum caution and minimum risk is necessary, completely different premises. to compare the men you should compare their skills/knowledge, not the shows.
@ArrowSmith95 lets compare the men: les is mainly self taught with a few survival courses from humber college in canada, no major accomplishments. bear is ex SAS, youngest brit to climb Everest, 1st to cross the North Atlantic unassisted on an inflatable craft, 1st to circumvent UK on a personal water craft, paramotored over the Himalayas, climbed one of the most remote and previously unclimbed peaks in Antarctica, and its probly best for you to just wiki the man and revel in his glory.

I never said everything he did is real, but he's had real SAS survival training (albeit SASR) and he teaches a lot of techniques that are used by the locals in each place, so its not all 'fake shit'. Les is true to providing the most realistic survival education show able to be aired on TV. Bear hosts a show where he presents survival techniques, while in a much less realistic situation. Both have to follow health and safety regulations as required by law. Both scout areas ahead of time and converse with local experts. Bear and Les represent two different styles of survival technique. Just because you host a less realistic show doesn't mean you have no understanding of the material.
Bear Grylls may not use all of the survival tatics you can use, basically bc he is showing you how to survive short term until you could be rescued or find your way out. I would'nt under-estimate a British SAS Commando because they are the 3rd best trained military group in history along-side of United States Navy Seals, and there is no such thing as an Ex- Commando.
bear grylls and his crew use cheap tactics, even though they've gotten better since being caught.
here's an example, few weeks ago man vs wild had an episode with Jake Gyllenhaal in Iceland. next week, another new episode, in Iceland AGAIN, but this time just with Bear.

Les Stroud films everything himself, enters into ACTUAL dangerous situations where (if he fucks up) he could very well die; he also stays at the places he camps at.
Bear Grylls quite often misleads the audience into thinking he finds resources and makes shit out of them, when he doesn't always do that. (E.g in one ep he makes a raft but it was already done for him, all he had to do was assemble it); Bear Grylls has a crew, he also stays at nearby hotels on occassion instead of camping out.
For what Bear Grylls has done with his life being an Ex SAS commando, I respect him, but I can tell you if you were to follow the advice he gives you through his Man vs. Wild show, you'll most likly die. Case and Point: My favorite survival book is the SAS Survival Guild by John Wiseman. Now Bear and John are both ex SAS commandos. In one MvW episode, I saw Bear drink his urine. In the SAS guide, it explicitly state NEVER drink your own urine. Bear only did that to show how tough he is.

Drinking straight up urine is as bad for you in a survival situation as drinking sea water. Always distill. And unlike Bear who at the start of the day is as healthy as he could be, goes out and films himself drinking is pee for is survival show, at the end of the day has access to medical care.
@feelthewords64 Like you said, urine may not be an imidiate danger for a healthy person, but in a survival situation, and especially at the point one would consider doing this, a person is most likely exhausted, worn down, tired, little food energy, and etc. Adding the ammoinia from urine to a body at that point only compounds your probems and lessens your chances of living. Something you can't afford to do. So if YOUR in that type of situation, go a head and drink your piss. Best of luck.

I think grylls gives what could be useful information for someone in a survival situation, but for bear, it is a means to an end. For Stroud, it's a way of life. Grylls has the ability to do what he does and get a large audience so it's working, but I think it's cuz he's the dashing charismatic Brit...and he was in the SAS reserve, not the operational segment of the SAS

@Rottenpie119 He sleeps in motels between takes. The night footage is real. They don't capture every possible obstacle in his journey so they go back in and shoot it. It wouldn't make any sense for him to stay out there all over again. This wasn't a secret even from the start, but that didn't stop people from lynching him when they heard about it. Regardless of that he still spends days in situations with bears, alligators, snakes, etc. and every bit of that is real.
watching Les is like watching a girl survive, eating leaves and spiders and shit WTF. the guy just survives. bear would live comfortably. Who would you want to be lost in the jungle with?

I don't dislike Grylls because he doesnt actually stay over night or at dangerous locations, but rather I dislike the premise that Grylls show attempts to make it seems real. There is a lack of humbleness or humility in Grylls shows. Both les and grylls shows are just a small amount of the info needed to actually survive. the difference is that Les stroud acknowledges his own limits and the show's limit to edutain.

everyone needs to realise that both les and bear are on tv to entertain while giving a few tips here and there. Bears gimmick is danger adrenalin rushes so he needs a crew to film it all. Les strouds gimmick is hes out by himself for a week this is why every1 goes for les coz it seems more real but really hes not ever in any danger his crew would know exactly where he is and rescue would be no less than 5 minutes away.
hey, I learned a lot from Bear Grylls. I learned that as soon as I'm faced with a survival situation, the first thing I should do is jump off a cliff into some freezing water- fully clothed; then later I will most likely find an adult caribou (easy to sneak up on), all I have to do is punch it in the face, then slit its throat and drink its blood (easy), then throw the carcass in a river and do a backflip off the highest cliff I can find. (into more freezing water)
Bear Grylls is more of a stuntman then a survivalist, who has corrupted my trust for him with his lies like: Stuffing your back pack & jump into a rapid river the pack will help you stay a float (anyone noticed the life vest outlining under his soaked jacket?), Some places he films at are a few yards from a highway(crossing the lava bridge), drinking your own pee( pee is 92% water 8% toxins)
Bottom line i'd rather be stranded in the wild with Les then with Bear
@Membrane556 According to Epnet's HealthLibrary, in a life or death situation drinking small amounts is better than nothing. The US army field manual says not to substitute it for water, but as far as I can remember it doesn't say never to drink it.
Les teaches real survivor skills, Bear just tries to show off and although he is athletic, normal people could not do what he does and should not try it.
Les Stroud is a hero of mine.

Most ppl would consider survival as the long term process in which u endure the elements as long as possible until rescue. In that case u'd want to minimize risk of any kind, thats Les. Bear has skills which allow him to pursue a completely different type of survival approach, with higher risk, to ensure as quick a rescue as possible. Both methods are fine, but shouldn't b compared. Les does all the camera work himself and that's super impressive, but normally what he does is he just makes a shelter and just waits and most of the time hes just in one spot until the 7days are over. Bear keeps moving and keeps going constantly making shelter and showing different ways of getting water and food.Les may be alone and that my be harder for him mentally, but Bear is the better survivalist

Les is true to providing the most realistic survival education show able to be aired on TV. Bear hosts a show where he presents survival techniques, while in a much less realistic situation. Both have to follow health and safety regulations as required by law. Both scout areas ahead of time and converse with local experts. Bear and Les represent two different styles of survival technique. Just because you host a less realistic show doesn't mean you have no understanding of the material.

Les Stroud films everything himself, enters into ACTUAL dangerous situations where (if he fucks up) he could very well die; he also stays at the places he camps at.
Bear Grylls quite often misleads the audience into thinking he finds resources and makes shit out of them, when he doesn't always do that. (E.g in one ep he makes a raft but it was already done for him, all he had to do was assemble it); Bear Grylls has a crew, he also stays at nearby hotels on occassion instead of camping out.

For what Bear Grylls has done with his life being an Ex SAS commando, I respect him, but I can tell you if you were to follow the advice he gives you through his Man vs. Wild show, you'll most likly die. Case and Point: My favorite survival book is the SAS Survival Guild by John Wiseman. Now Bear and John are both ex SAS commandos. In one MvW episode, I saw Bear drink his urine. In the SAS guide, it explicitly state NEVER drink your own urine. Bear only did that to show how tough he is.

@feelthewords64 Like you said, urine may not be an imidiate danger for a healthy person, but in a survival situation, and especially at the point one would consider doing this, a person is most likely exhausted, worn down, tired, little food energy, and etc. Adding the ammoinia from urine to a body at that point only compounds your probems and lessens your chances of living. I think grylls gives what could be useful information for someone in a survival situation, but for bear, it is a means to an end. For Stroud, it's a way of life. It wouldn't make any sense for him to stay out there all over again. This wasn't a secret even from the start, but that didn't stop people from lynching him when they heard about it. Regardless of that he still spends days in situations with bears, alligators, snakes, etc. and every bit of that is real.

I don't dislike Grylls because he doesnt actually stay over night or at dangerous locations, but rather I dislike the premise that Grylls show attempts to make it seems real. There is a lack of humbleness or humility in Grylls shows. Bear Grylls may be more entertaining but his crazy shit will likely get you killed while what Les Stroud does will probably save your life.

I like both show, only watch bear's show due to les isn't making any more.
Although for les , he could real get hurt for real and maybe his crew might not get to him or find him.
For bear, I think he should go make some Rambo movies , I think he might be a great sniper or special force thing (Hollywood video special effects) then he can do all those crazy moves.

everyone needs to realise that both les and bear are on tv to entertain while giving a few tips here and there. Bears gimmick is danger adrenalin rushes so he needs a crew to film it all. Les strouds gimmick is hes out by himself for a week this is why every1 goes for les coz it seems more real but really hes not ever in any danger his crew would know exactly where he is and rescue would be no less than 5 minutes away.

hey, I learned a lot from Bear Grylls. I learned that as soon as I'm faced with a survival situation, the first thing I should do is jump off a cliff into some freezing water- fully clothed; then later I will most likely find an adult caribou (easy to sneak up on), all I have to do is punch it in the face, then slit its throat and drink its blood (easy), then throw the carcass in a river and do a backflip off the highest cliff I can find. (into more freezing water)

Bear Grylls is more of a stuntman then a survivalist, who has corrupted my trust for him with his lies like: Stuffing your back pack & jump into a rapid river the pack will help you stay a float (anyone noticed the life vest outlining under his soaked jacket?), Some places he films at are a few yards from a highway(crossing the lava bridge), drinking your own pee( pee is 92% water 8% toxins)
Bottom line i'd rather be stranded in the wild with Les then with Bear

Urine is hyper-osmotic which means it contains more salt ions then the blood plasma of the person who produced it.
It'll actually worsen the situation in much the same way as drinking seawater.
BTW the US arm field manual says don't do it for the above reason.

@Membrane556 According to Epnet's HealthLibrary, in a life or death situation drinking small amounts is better than nothing. The US army field manual says not to substitute it for water, but as far as I can remember it doesn't say never to drink it.
