somebody's saying look at how smart I am and how much control I have over you with sound and behavior and your natural instinct for fixation and arousal. i don't even have to be in the picture to run you into the ground and that is the amount of abstract lateral intelligence I have over you.
These guys formed in 1969/1970 as The Village with John Denmar (vocalist seen here) and Gothic Harris. Started out as acoustic psych troubador with early records like Let's Trade and Acoustic Island. Eventually they rocked every segment of the pop universe from New Wave (The Band with the X-Ray Eyes), Folk Rock (The Road Goes Ever On), and Acid Pop (The Acid Test. Basements and garages explode with music and good times! In this movie The Village is portrayed as The Whores (not the same group).
Not sure if its been mentioned yet, but this is "The Whores" from LA. hey went on to form "The Deadbeats" with the same singer. In the linear notes of the Deadbeats CD it goes over the saga of The Whores. Great tune!
Pretty great vid, this was basically my introduction to punk music when this movie was released, this is prolly the birth of punk. Like many people, I'd like to know the name of the band, the name of the song, and where I can download it along with more of their stuff.
Scott Guerin: If not for a string of chance events the Deadbeats may never have come into existence. My brother was asked to play drums for a band called The Whores for the battle of the bands sequence in Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke movie. Except he went and got himself grounded for cutting class too much and couldn't do it. So I filled in for him. This lineup was scheduled to play the Whisky but then the singer was forced to back out under the advice of his lawyer.
It seems he was involved in a lawsuit with the Whisky so playing there would constitute a conflict of interest. There was only one course of action to take. I moved to vocals and my brother was brought back to fill the drum slot. For me as a singer this was literally on-the-job training as I had never even thought about singing before and truthfully was pretty awful. After a few sporadic shows our guitarist Hilary Haines up and quit and moved to San Francisco.
Pat Delaney and I decided to change the name of the band to the Deadbeats.--These comments are not in order, I found this on a website. Whether or not members of "The Whores" formed "The Deadbeats" I don't know, The Deadbeats have a Myspace page, I though about asking them, but I don't have a Myspace account. The Deadbeats music sounds very similar to the clip in this vid, sorry for all the comment space I used, but I thought some others may be interested. Cheers!! PISS OFF!! C. Walker
@TheStrainers I was on the Deadbeats Myspace page, I'm sure some of them could prolly remember what happened and who was in what band, and who the people are in this clip and what happened to them. I don't have a Myspace account though so I couldn't post a comment. Apparently, there were many punk rock bands in LA around this time, constantly switching members. This was a great song for the period, and I still love it.
@clintonearlwalker There wasn't really many bands yet at this time in LA But it was picking up speed. Scott who is on drums in this became a total great live act front man for The Deadbeats (Geza X on Guitar). The Deadbeats were just so different. But all LA Punk bands were very original at that time in LA. Mostly drummers were the ones playing in 2,3,4 bands at a time. Drummers Nicky Beat and DJ Bone Brake and my brother were very active in a few bands that started in 1977.
@TheStrainers I think we might come from 2 totally different worlds. I worked in a drive-in as a projectionist, I usually had to watch the same 2 movies for 7 nights straight, including the one with this clip. My knowledge of punk is very limited. I do love Never Mind the Bollocks by Sex Pistols, I had it about from the first day of it's release, also, In God We Trust Inc. by The Dead Kennedys. Who is the fellow singing in this vid, do you happen to know?
@clintonearlwalker During this movie the band was called Whores, Now the band is called the Village and the name of the song is Bischool. Good video mix, I love this song. Thanks
@spiritof1977 Dat be it buddy!! I got "Bischool" by Village cranking in another tab right now for only the third time so far, there will be many more plays. There is no video, but there is audio on a Myspace music player. Sounds just exactly like the band from the movie, only the Myspace version is longer with more lyrics. I'm going to see if I can find some more "Village" music. Thanx and Cheers!!

This could have been the Whores and they are a real band - in fact real bands appearing in this movie:
Berlin Brats
The Dils
The Whores
The Weirdos
The Zeros
There is a mention of these bands filming the scenes in this movie from the great book,
"Lexicon Devil" the Darby Crash story.
