  • 1:41 was that Mike Keenan? Wow that was a brutal cross check man. I wish Lindross never played for that team but I have to admit he is the perfect mould for that type of physicality and game plan. Pretty harsh and should have received something along the lines of Bertuzzi and Dale Hunter.

  • Wow, the comentators are really unsympathetic towards Sandstrom, am I missing something here?

  • @grunge10111 They were unsympathetic because Sandstrom had a history of over embellishing injuries like that in order to get penalties. He did so in a game just a few weeks prior. He was like the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" and this was the time when the wolves actually came and unfortunately they did not believe him. They apologized the following game when they realized their mistake.

  • @DaveTV2 K that makes sense. I hate players like that too haha thanks!

  • @grunge10111 I was thinking the same thing myself... guy got fucking cross checked across the domepiece... really !?!

  • @DODPHOTOGRAPHY I know I mean look at his jaw @1:13, not even the best of them can fake that.

  • I remember when this happened, but I don't remember anyone feeling too bad about it. Pretty much the feeling was "It's about time." Sandstorm was a dirty POS.

  • Players policing themselves. Sandstrom was a dirty piece of shit who would always hide behind the refs. He runs over Hextall, jabs him with his stick. Brown goes in and does what he`s paid to do, take out the trash. Think Lucic would have taken a run at Miller with Dave Brown in the line-up? It was over the line, but I'll bet that was the last time Sandstrom got close to a Philly goalie.

  • Dave Brown, hockeys biggest jumper and cheapshot artist,! overated enforcer as well!

  • @ufcenforcer thats why he made miller his bitch losing only one time out of what 8 bouts? LOL

  • Sandstrom was just whacking the shit out of Hextal there before he got chopped down by Brown.

  • ass hole

  • brown is just an animal but he was good at it

thats A1 pure brutaly and violence

  • Okay, all you Gene Hart fans can settle down. Yes, the announcer here who makes comments like "acting school" and "he'll be back out there skating twice as fast on the next shift" is a total douchewad who's ignoring a blatant, vicious cheapshot that led to one of the longest suspensions in NHL history at the time. But, the guy speaking isn't Gene Hart, it's Bobby Taylor. So, you're both right. Gene Hart was good, Bobby Taylor sucks ass. So there!

  • @FastWalkToFresno Yes, they were wrong and insensitive but when you are dealing with a guy who had a reputation of acting and embellishing penalties it becomes very hard to believe him even when he is really hurt. Gene Hart even alludes to him doing that very thing during a game the previous year which is I bet where a lot of what they said this time came from.

You said they were "ignoring" it but they may not have even seen the replay till after. Clearly their attention was on the ice.

  • @DaveTV2 Yeah, Sandstrom played it up at times like an Italian soccer player. But, I actually remember watching this game live and we all jumped up and went, "HOLY S&#$!!!" when it happened. It was really, really obvious. It would be one thing if he had been hurt by a shoulder check and he might have been hamming it up, but a blatant cross-check to the side of the head? Boy who cried wolf or not, it was really clear Brown slammed his stick in Sandstrom's head. Taylor was one a Don Cherry wannabe

  • @FastWalkToFresno I hear you but one thing you also have to consider is that the announcers are not watching it on TV. They are watching it from WAY up high in MSG. So far that various announcers have been commenting on how bad the view is for years. It might not have been quite so obvious from their vantage point. I am not making excuses for them but considering this was an isolated incident in two LONG careers involving Sandstrom of all players, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

  • @DaveTV2 I hear you. My main point was really in response to the Gene Hart argument that it wasn't even Hart speaking during those particular comments! It was a pretty stupid thing to say, but Taylor was a goalie and he probably took too many pucks to the head!

  • @FastWalkToFresno Yea, but he was equally as guilty as he got the sarcastic insensitivity rolling with his saying "Dave Brown buries Sandstrom who is now going to play dead and hopes he gets a 5 min major as he did in the game last year in Philadelphia." then he continues "he's dead on the ice again". One thing I did just notice is that they did watch the replay and neither one of them says anything like that afterward. My guess is that they realized it was a pretty harsh cross check.

  • @FastWalkToFresno

Word! the announcer did he later make statement on his briliant speach on Sanström?

  • Brown was a goon

  • The flyer annoncers are the WORST asshole EVER!!, they have ALWAYS been the dirties team in the NHL and these fuck heads cant even admit after seeing the replay the THEY SUCK!!!!! Brown blows, possibly the worst player ever!

  • @44sox44 Let me see. You say they (Gene Hart) is the "worst". The NHL thinks enough of him that they induct him into the Hall of Fame. I wonder whose opinion means more.

As was said, have you ever heard of the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf?. This was an example of life imitating art. Yes their comments were insensitive and wrong but reason they doubted him was because Sandstrom was famous for acting and embellishing.

BTW, they admitted they were wrong and apologized the following game.

  • @DaveTV2 @44sox44 I'll agree it was harsh cross check, but to call Gene Hart names? You show an extreme lack of knowledge. He was one of the best in the history. Hall of Famer and in my mind, right up there with Harry Kalas

  • @44sox44 I'll agree it was harsh cross check, but to call Gene Hart names? You show an extreme lack of knowledge. He was one of the best in the history. Hall of Famer and in my mind, right up there with Harry Kalas.

  • you could tell he nailed him good. What do you expect from flyers' announcers? Their team identity is bullying.

  • I HATED Sandstrom! He was such a cheapshot artist. I'm not saying that he deserved a stick in the head, but... I wish Brown would've dropped him with his fist instead.

  • atta boy brownie

  • Respect?? Respect?? Are you kidding?? What respect?? Good thing for Avery he plays in the watered down NHL after that bullshit he pulled on Sunday.

  • 5 minutes earlier and the game before hw hit howe in the head with his stick. remember sandtrom was a cheapshot artist!!!

  • another euro pussy...should have stayed in the elite league or whatever its called

  • what a pussy and Moore got what he deserved. Bertuzzi was and still is one of my favourite players hes a beast.

  • @bigreid66 so is dave brown

  • I remember this play I was watching the game. The most brutal assault I've ever seen except for maybe the Bertuzzi debacle. Sandstrom was very chippy but also a talented player and this should not have happened. I think Brown got a 20 game suspension or something like that.

  • @johnmusk Bertuzzi's was pretty bad yeah. But there have been a lot worse ones over the years of hockey.

  • actingschool? are you fucking kidding me? worst announcer ever...

  • Good Sandstrom was a dirty piece of shit as a player. Brownie gave him what he deserved. Sandstrom and Kurri rocked Jimmie Johnson from Dallas head first into the board

  • @bigreid66 I guess you just guessing that he was a dirty player cuz what it looks like you dont know that much about hockey, He was not a dirty player but he took much punishment and crosschecks to the face, I donno how many times Brown crosschecked him through the years,

  • @xjedimindx actually I know a lot about hockey a lot more than you'll ever know. Sandstrom was known as a chicken shit who never answered the call when he did something stupid. But i do dare you to challenge me on hockey knowledge wouldnt be a wise idea for you

  • @bigreid66 haha is that a challenge?

  • @xjedimindx and yes I would challenge you anytime and you'd fail just like your boy Tomas. Dancing and strutting around like Don Cherry would say. He was a chicken shit

  • @bigreid66 Chicken shit or not, that was a really bad cross check to the face. Have you ever been hit in the face with a stick? It hurts like hell...

  • @xjedimindx remember when he got suckered by Keane in the playoffs when he was with the Wings. He's your typical pussy Swede.

  • Did you hear the Flyer announcers? They should have been banned for their callous comments.

  • No Ranger even challenged Dave Brown. I remember back in the '80s, Phil Esposito always built the Rangers to be small, soft and offensive minded. The Rangers never stood up for each other until Joe Kocur and Adam Graves got there.

  • @utubberman Sorry bud. Not going to let you post hateful comments which include wishing people dead simply because of something they said during a friggin' hockey game. Think about the irony their. They simply suggested he was acting. YOU are wishing people dead. Please get some help.

BTW, "incompetent"? Gene Hart is a Hall of Fame announcer! FAR from "incompetent". He was one of the best. In this instance he made a mistake.

  • @RobDog65 and what does that say about you that you would say something so vile over friggin' hockey? And you think I am going to leave that hateful comment up for any one to read or allow you to reply? Nope!

  • Typical flyer's announcers....No class.

  • @clean697 Here's the trick. Delete every spam comment you make before ANYONE sees it causing you to waste your time! Jakass! Get a life!

  • @MyAbsorbed Here's the trick. Delete you spam comments before anyone sees them and block your ass!

  • i remember how much of ababy sandstrom, get up you fag. you can obviuosly see he snapped his own neck back like he was in a 100 mph crash. brown only pushed

  • @testfoecho

youre a fucking idiot if you actually believe that...all you have to do is see that once and know how dirty of a cheapshot that was, regardless of sandstroms reputation

  • loved it!! He cross checked Howe earlier in the same game!!

  • Acting School LOL I used to love Bobby Taylor with Gene Hart

  • :44 "Acting School"? is that what he said the announcer? If so what a fuckin idiot. He broke his fucking jaw and sustained a serious concussion.

  • @dirtyminded604 Why is it people have to re-write history? Sandstrom did not break his jaw. From the NY Times article "Sandstom suffered a concussion and was hospitalized over night."

I think if he had suffered a broken jaw, not only would the NY Times have said so but he would have missed at LEAST one game. He did not miss any. Likewise if it was such a "serious" concussion he would have missed at LEAST one game. Sandstrom was known for his acting which is why they though he was this time.

  • Wanna slash the goalie after the whistle? ok then :) Bottom line is, if Dave Brown hits you, it's going to hurt A LOT. If this was someone like Avery, then Sandstrom would have been on the next shift.

  • @Kurzgan So let me ask you. Is it your memory / opinion that Tomas Sandstrom was a diver and would embellish often in order to get penalties?

  • typical homer announcers for the home team (flyers)

sandstrom was pone of the best players on the rags 983 games 856 points forget the last 209 games he played where he had only had 91 points

772 games 763 points before injuries really caught up to him

    he was great

  • @SleeCee Name me home team announcers that AREN'T "homers"! Beyond that, their comments had nothing to do with his ability. If Sandstrom is remembered more for his antics than his play then that is his OWN fault. Another quote from that before mentioned '94 article: "Sandstrom's critics - and they are legion - regard him as the most abrasive player in the game, and most of his supporters won't argue the point. But there are many who believe his vile reputation obscures considerable skills."

  • actually sandstrom was bit of a cheap shot artist who was known to use his stick on a few occasions

  • @buttkick22 Very True! Sandstrom was a dirt bag. Even his teammates said so. In a Pittsburgh Post Gazette article dated 2/17/94, Marty McSorley said "Tomas is a dirty hockey player". The writer of the article said "Sandstrom might not be the dirtiest player in the league, but he is no worse than a bronze medalist." jkrx seems to think he is only criticized because he is European. That does not surprise me nor does his denial of his reputation as a diver considering he is from the same country.

  • @DaveTV2 Where did I state he wasnt dirty?

  • @jkrx Where did I state you didn't?

  • @DaveTV2 It's just like when like people from finland insist the jarkko ruutu isn't dirty.

  • @buttkick22 Exactly, I do not understand why criticisms which are EARNED a player's own actions are so offensive to people simply because they play for a team they like or come from the same part of the world. Sandstrom was a skilled player but he was also a dirt bag coward who liked to start shit, usually with his stick and then either run away or flop to the ice like he was shot when someone retaliated which he was KNOWN for doing. jkrx seemed to miss that part or chooses to ignore it.

  • @buttkick22 oh so your 25 years old live could have watched sandstroms whole career or a big part?...lol

  • wow , keenan looks like "hitler" in this one ........ thats where he got his nickname from.......i remember dale rolfe getting punched out by dave shultz , they rangers never didnt do anything then , and same with this .....

  • cross check in the face typical phillies cheapshots

  • This type of Flyer-crap is why I don't really get that broken up when a Flyer is hurt.

  • Brown got 15 games

  • hockey is one of the toughest sports around.

  • idoits,!!!!!! sandström broke his chin, and had a brain damage.. acting school????? fuckin idiots....

  • I have to ask who is a bigger "idiot"? The announcers who, although reacted insensitively in hindsight (admitted to it and apologized the next game BTW) but reacted that way because of Sandstrom's LONG history of faking injury for penalties (did so the year prior which they mention)

    OR

Someone (you) who 23 years later cannot get his facts straight. Sandstrom did NOT have brain damage nor did he break his chin. He suffered a mild concussion and played the next night!

I think you win the prize!

  • @DaveTV2 Facts: He broke his jaw and had a concussion.

  • @GGG16KKK Facts: From the NY Times article dated Nov 3 1987 I quote "Sandstrom, a right wing, suffered a concussion and was hospitalized overnight."

No mention of a broken jaw there. Don't you think if they mentioned the concussion they would have also mentioned something as severe as a broken jaw? Of course they would ESPECIALLY in NY! The article also says "He played in the Rangers' next three games, but did not score."

Now please share your facts and source please! Not your memories.

  • @DaveTV2 hhahaah Long history? He faked once or twice like any other hockey player but because being european he gets crap for it.

  • @jkrx "He faked once or twice"? LOL You have GOT to be kidding me. Just listen to what Gene Hart says after it happens: "He is now going to play dead in the hopes that he gets another 5 minute major as he did in last year in the game in Philadelphia". Let me guess, the incident they are talking about was one of just the two other times? If your age is accurate on your page, you were 3-4 years old when this happened. I ask how the hell would you even know? Yea, Sandstrom was a choir boy!

  • @DaveTV2 Yea he were talking about something in another Flyers game. Ofcourse he is going to bring that up. It doesnt really matter, when you see a player get a blatant crosscheck to the face you dont assume he is diving. Bad announcers.

  • @jkrx it does not matter that it happened in another Flyers game. It establishes a pattern and kind of proves your "once or twice" statement as false. What, you think he only pulled this crap against the Flyers? He was known for it and it has nothing to do with the fact that he was European.

Have you ever heard of the story of "The boy who cried wolf?" The reason the announcers thought that is because he was KNOWN for doing it. You do not get that reputation for only doing it once or twice.

  • @DaveTV2 He wasnt "known" for it. It happned once or twice as I said. Yea because when you see a guy take a crosscheck to the head you immiedietly think he must be diving. No biased announcers think that. Its like when the announcers said that Seabrook were selling it when he was hit to the head by Wiesniewski. It shows a pattern because he dove once in another Flyers game by the way? Great logic... lmao

  • @jkrx LOL!! Again, how would you even know that? You were at the MOST 4 years old at the time! You would have no CLUE what his reputation would have been at that point and time in 1987 so how can you even say that it was only "once or twice"? I watched hockey back then and saw it with my own eyes on MANY occasions. Did you? At 3 years old I am guessing not. They thought he was diving because he WAS known for it. Unless you were old enough to remember it then you have no basis for what you say.

  • @DaveTV2 Im older than my profile says. I watched games back then so I know too.. Sandstrom wasnt known for diving he was known for being a bit of an agitator. He took dives against philadelphia cause, well, why wouldnt you. Philly played the dumbest hockey and took stupid pens all the time. I remember a game when Sandstrom took a highstick and two X-checks to his face. Dave Brown was involved in that too. When a team plays that stupid you would be stupid too if you didnt sell it to the refs

  • @jkrx Either way, you just admitted it by saying well "he took dives against Philadelphia" and "sells" it to the refs, oh wait only "once or twice" right? You saw every one of his games? Give me a break. It is ridiculous to think that he would ONLY do it against one team and no one else. If he did it against Philly then he would certainly do it against other teams. You are foolish to think a guy like that wouldn't. You just admitted what he did and guess what? He WAS known for it because of it!

  • @DaveTV2 I admitted taking dives.. dives=2 you know plural. Your logical conclussions are laughable. Its like saying just because Dave Brown crosschecked Tomas Sandstrom in the face he did it alot and were known for it. Show me all these dives then? Surely if he was such a diver there should be some footage like there are of others?

  • @jkrx what is "laughable" is that you continually and definitively say that he only did it "twice" in 983 RS games + playoff games in order to make a point. In ALL those games you somehow know that he only did it "twice" or "once" as you said? The guy was a dirt bag who is FAMOUS for his nasty stick work AND his embellishing penalties and it is a MUCH safer assumption that he did it more than "twice" than it is to think a guy like that would be so honorable that he wouldn't. Plus I witnessed it!

  • @jkrx Your requesting video footage of it is idiotic. Who the hell is going to post that kind of stuff of a player like that? Hell, the incident that Gene Hart was referring to is not even online but CLEARLY, it happened. Dave brown was a "goon" and yes he was known for it. This came as no surprise to anyone. No one says he was "known" for cross checking people in the head because he did not do it often. Sandstrom WAS known for diving and embellishing because he DID!

  • @jkrx here is a quote I just found from someone talking about this particular event. He said: "Sandstrom, aside from his ability to score, was a known pest, dirty with the stick and quick to dive to the ice to get a call, so one can understand why the homer announcers were quick to jump to that conclusion."

What that does is establishes someone ELSE's opinion that he was a diver which goes to what I said that he was KNOWN for it. I know it, he knows it and I am sure many others KNOW it!

  • @jkrx OMG, Dude you should not haver gotten me started. MORE proof of Sandstrom being KNOWN for his diving and embellishing. I quote: "One of the most despised Rangers players among the Flyers was right wing Tomas Sandstrom. A skilled goal scorer and world-class pest, the Swedish forward had the reputation for jabbing and slashing opponents with his stick and then refusing to fight. He was also accused of EMBELLISHING hits to try to draw penalties against the opposition. "

    Get it yet?

  • @DaveTV2 "He was also ACCUSED of embelleshing hits to try to draw penalties against the opposition." I can accuse you of embelleshing, doesnt mean you do it.

  • @jkrx OMG. Dude now you are getting desperate. If he was not constantly falling every time someone touched him or retailed then he would not be accused of it. People were "accusing" him of it because he was constantly flopping to the ice. You can debate the accuracy of the statement all you want, the fact is it is PROOF that he was KNOWN for it. It is PROOF that I am not the only one who thinks that about him and is in fact support of my statement! Why is it so hard for you to accept?

  • Sandstrom was a dirty player, & he used to embellish, but here it's interesting to note how when watching the replay the Flyer's announcers don't say a word, as if they're admitting, "Oh. We were wrong, that was really a dirty crosscheck". That was beyond dirty. Even they must've thought after re-watching it, "Boy, I wish we had shut the fuck up & waited. We sound like dirtbags". Gene Hart, Bobby Taylor & Gary Dornhoefer were shameless homers. I'm glad Sam Rosen & JD were impartial on MSG.

  • @dzanier They actually apologized for their insensitivity the following game when they realized he was not acting. Again, it is like the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" though. It is not the first time Sandstrom put on such a performance all the way back to the bench. He did it against the Flyers the previous year and got a 5 min major for his efforts which I believe is why they thought that he was doing it again this time.

Dornhoefer was actually not part of the broadcast team in '87.

  • I didn't know about their apology so I want to to apologize for saying they were insensitive. Sandstrom was a victim of his past actions in this instance, & it's only in retrospect that the Flyers' announcers sounded bad. They were justified in doubting him. I know Dave Brown speared him the year before, & in another game several flyers players went at hit high. I think part of it was that Tomas, like Ulf Samuelsson, was also a hard guy to feel sorry for cause he was dirty in his own right

  • @dzanier No need to apologize. They were insensitive. I just try to make sure people who see this for the first time now know where their reaction came from. If they do not know the history or the kind of player Sandstrom when it came to his embellishing, they seem heartless. In hindsight they were wrong but they can't be faulted for doubting him and thinking he may be faking.

I am not sure what kind of replay technology they had in the booth at the time. I would be interested to know that.

  • That wasn't brain damage. Sandstrom was always that stupid.

  • @harsta81 ever read Aesop's fables? look up "The Boy who Cried Wolf."

  • it does'nt matter how much of a pussy sandstrom is, this kind of play should not happen. Brown should be out of NHL for intent to injure another player and any other player who does this should also be prosecuted for criminal assault. The NHL has so guts to address this!

  • @weinmanjoe Might I suggest girls basketball ! This is HOCKEY, a game played with speed, intensity, and emotion. $h!t happens.........

  • Sandstroms now gonna "play dead". That is Classic.... Leave it to Gene Hart !

  • sandstrom deserved this and then some...brownie is the ultimate enforcer.case closed.

  • @brownfightfanatic ultimate enforcer hell yeah he punished melnyck the same night killed 2 rangers howe and sandstorm lmao he dispatched 3 rangs

  • thats what sandstrom gets for pushing hextall

  • ooooooo! thts not face, thats, thats neck

  • If I rember correct Brownie was suspended for a lot of games for this assault but I think it's worse to hear what the comments are " acting school" etc. etc.

  • And Sandstrom was the biggest pussy to ever play the game! Fuck all of you Rangers fans... We played the game the way it needed to be played back then... I couldn't be prouder of my Flyers for the way they played. Sandstrom needed to change his tampon, and Brown did it for him...

  • Yeah, Nice stick to the face! I want to see more of these. Maybe after a player is near death caused by this the NHL will finally do something to stop this crap from happenning!

  • @weinmanjoe take off your skirt and put your big boy pants on! I wish Brown broke his neck, Sandstrom was a p*ssy.

  • Fucking cheapshot. Loooooser!

  • I loved brownie as a fighter but that was awful, just a total lack of respect for a fellow player..

  • @Dajjen Sandstrom seemed to have quite a reputation as a chicken shit with a visor who refused to fight, And back when hockey was in its prime this is how you dealt with " Sean Avery " types....... The right way

  • @PocketHercules99 nah Dave should have dropped the gloves and smacked him around but to use your stick like that is just bush..

  • lol "play dead" he was crosschecked in the face. I wish Dave Brown would've gone up there and crosschecked them in the face. Cause I think even him would be upset for that quote lol.

  • LMAO at good old Chief. I thought that was his voice when I heard it. Best color analyst hands down.

  • acting school? the flyers announcers were probably second behind the boston ones as homers. Why did he do that to the neck and head with the stick?

P.S. Flyers never fight their own battles. Always interference, potties on heads, or other cheap tactics. Squared up and no helmets aor interference Gillies would have destroyed Brown!

  • He did it because Sandstrom was a dirt bag. I won't disagree that was a little over the top but if you saw the rest of the game and the history between the two you can understand where it came from.

But "Flyers never fight their own battles"? LOL. So who fights their battles for them? There are PLENTY of videos of Brown as well and MANY other Flyers fighting "their own battles" on YT. Brown was one tough S.O.B. and for you to deny it is simply ignorant.

  • One more thing to the why question. Again, not justifying that kind of an attack but one thing to keep in mind. This was Hextall's first game of the 87-88 season after coming off his 7 game suspension from the finals the previous year. The Flyers had to know that teams were going to be using players like Sandstrom to try to get him off his game... and it happened ALL year that year. So there had to be an effort to protect him. Of course that went a bit far but probably where it was coming from

  • Wish Hextall would have whacked him while he laid on the ice.

Sandstrom, worst actor in the history of the NHL.

  • Ye because a stick in the face doesnt hurt..

  • Sandstrom was a bitch in his early years but this was brutal, Brown could've grabbed him and rag dolled him and everything would've been fine. The Flyer announcers back in the day were ultra homers.

  • Brown used his stick only twice in his career. Both against Sandstrom. As much as I hated Sandstrom he did not deserve that. He did deserve a good asskicking, and fists would have sufficed.

  • Umm... OW. He like almost ripped that guys head off. He wasn''t acting!!

  • Who cares if he was acting or not? Got what he deserved, is all that matters.

  • ACTING SCHOOL? are u fucking kiding me? acting school thats so fucking rediculous he fucking almost lobbed his head off. these flyer anouncers are all fucking dumbasses who dont no shit about hockey they should all fucking die im not even kiding. fucking acting school?

  • Problem with Sandstrom is that he was like the Boy Who Cried Wolf. He was constantly embellishing injuries and diving so that was a natural reaction. Yes they were wrong in this case and apologized for their insensitive comments the following game.

As far as them being "fucking dumbasses" and "not knowing shit about hockey"? Well, apparently that is only YOUR "dumbass" opinion because one of those "dumbasses" is a NHL Hall of Fame announcer. I guarantee they BOTH know / knew more than you.

  • how is that a natural reaction? thats almost as rediculous as saying that its not a slash because "the stick is to weak"

  • It was a natural reaction because if someone is constantly flopping and faking injuries in attempt to make them look worse and draw penalties, why should they have believed that he was really hurt this time? If someone constantly lies, it is natural not to believe them even if they are telling the truth about something.

  • this is not a natural reaction. sandstrom wasn't a lamb, but this is way over the top. if everyone reacted like this, well, u get the point.

  • I would certainly not say that Brown's actions were a "natural reaction" to anything Sandstrom could have done nor would I defend it. It was over the top as you say even for Sandstrom. What I DO think is a "natural reaction" are Gene Hart & Bobby Taylor's reaction to it. Sandstrom was FAMOUS for embellishing, flopping and faking. This was 1987 so I am not sure what kind of immediate replays they had access to like they do today. They apologized for the comments the following game.

  • One of the biggest losers to ever disgrace an N.H.L. uniform gets a sswweeeett one.

  • fuck with the goalie, check to the face.. everything seems to be in order here.

  • it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. He did slash Hextall and earlier he hit Howe in the head with his stick. This was retaliation from before.

  • fuckin' clown announcers

  • I believe that was the end of the flyer problems with the rangers

  • Brown was an assassin!! A slow, scary, violent thug!

  • Notice how the Flyers announcers clammed up and stopped saying Sandstrom was acting after they saw the replay. Brownie broke the man's jaw!!

  • Act school? Look at the slowmo replay!

  • sweet

  • Gene Hart you Fatso.What a homer.

Sandstrom was a bit of a diver but

never slashed the goalie or did anything

    there to warrant that.Pathetic homerism.

  • No, Sandstrom did not deserve that but after his history of "crying wolf" and embellishing injuries just to get penalties you cannot blame Gene Hart for thinking is was just another in a long history of it.

BTW, Once he and Bobby Taylor realized the seriousness of the shot they were man enough to apologize on the air for their insensitivity the following game.

His weight really does not have anything to do with it. The man is a Hall of Fame announcer so have some respect!

  • HE WAS A Fat homer pig. How dare you defend what he said. The guy spoke how he felt and the station made him say he was sorry. Hart was also defending and making shit up to show the Flyers in a better light

  • I was not defending him, I'm just giving the facts. Here is what we know. 1. That "Fat homer Pig" is an NHL Hall of Fame Announcer and is well respected. 2. Sandstrom WAS a huge faker and DID have a long history of it. So for him to be doing it again was not out of the realm of possibility 3. Gene Hart DID apologize publicly so give him credit for doing so.

What we don't know? Well, what you said about the station "making" him say it. I kind of doubt that!

  • With all due respect to your knowledge, DaveTV2, it WAS suggested Hart & Taylor offer an on-air apology for their brutally honest comments(which I still love to this day), it was the station covering their asses. Those of you who think Hart & The Chief were homers, try listening to the Rangers TV audio on that play(or ever, for that matter), Sam Rosen & John Davidson or the dinosaur duo that used to do Bruin games(especially when Hextall scored his goal) and you'll hear what a real homer is.

  • May I ask how you know this for a certainty? Do you have a source on it that you can share? At least as far as the following game goes, I know it was not said on air that it was a request or "suggested" that they deliver and apology because I have the game on tape (vs Devils).

  • Oh? Kinda like every other announcer in the NHL has?

  • 2 handed!

  • Sandstrom was WORSE then Claude Lemeiux. He's lucky he didn't get the business from Hexy. The next game Gene Hart and Bobby Taylor apologized for there comments.

  • I miss Gene Hart. Best play by play. Though he was rather rough on Sandstrom there. ;) That was a tough cross check. Dave Brown kicked ass!

  • boy, those assholes sure didn't want to correct themselves when they saw the replay.

  • Brown should have gotten maybe 5-10 games for this. Sandstrom missed 1 game due to this cross check. Let me say that again. Sandstrom missed 1 game because of this cross check.

  • Wow those announcers didnt have a clue..haha clowns

  • how bout i cross check these commentators in the face?

  • Well, Gene Hart is deceased so you might have a little trouble getting that one done. I think you can find Bobby Taylor in Tampa Bay these days if you are so inclined.

  • I saw the game and always wondered if Dave Brown was ticked that he got beat earlier in a fight with Larry Melnyk.

  • @alartandy yes he was hot mad. he did not get beat but more like draw him.

  • who the fuck are these stupid fuckwits commentating?? Acting school? What a bunch of idiots.

  • Those "stupid fuckwits" would be Gene Hart and Bobby Taylor. As an NHL Hall of Fame announcer, Gene Hart is FAR from a "stupid fuckwit" so have a little respect. The "acting school" comment came from Sandstrom's LONG history of diving, crying and embellishing in order to get penalties. When they realized afterward that he was not acting, they apologized for their comments the following game.

  • That clown Sandstrom missed 1 game and scored in his first game back from this injury. Scumbag...

  • I remember this like it was yesterday! lmao! Hart and Taylor were the best! "acting school" Looked like Brown would have took his head off if it wasnt attached to his shoulder pads! HA HA HA HA !SANDSTROM WAS A PUSSY AND DESERVED EVERY CHEAP SHOT HE GOT!

  • Sandstrom looks just like Woody Harrelson

  • haha ya he does! thats why grapes loves him

  • Gene Hart = Best hockey announcer ever. They gotta get rid of Jackson and bring someone else in that the fans can warm up to.

  • thanks...takes me back....i miss those days

  • Same here. Nothing like a good cross check in the face to get your juices flowing. Someone need to do that to Cindy Crosby and give him something to REALLY whine about!

  • i think this was hextall's first game back after vhis suspension for slashing kent neillson in the finals of 87

  • You would be correct. I actually included that factual tidbit in the description. : )

  • I know sandström irl, and his son ;<

  • That's not a cross check.

  • Sandström wasn't a bad player, he has damn good stats. 983 NHL games, 394 goals and 463 assists for 857 points, including a couple 40-goal seasons.

  • No, he wasn't a bad player, finally someone who get the facts.

Faker or no faker, I can't tell , I did not see him play in the NHL.

But the stats says it all...

  • "Acting school" Bob Taylor used to make me laugh from time to time. too bad he's a Lightning now

  • These announcers are so stupid. "Acting school." Durrr.... he got cross-checked in the face.

  • I don't know if I would go as far as to call them "stupid". Insensitive maybe! Gene Heart was one of the best. Problem is that Sandstrom had a long history of... lets say, embellishing injuries to get penalties. Plus he was just downright annoying. I think they just reacted based on history. I saw it live and did think they went too far with their comments especially after I saw the replay. They were at least men enough to acknowledge their mistakes and apologized for it the next game.

  • Its Gene Hart not Gene Heart.
