Great goal, however, he should be putting the ball into the box not shooting... Football is about percentages and putting the ball in the 6 yard box gives a better chance of scoring

yes, a super goal which summed up that great Brazilian side although Italy had given up by the 87th minute...just look at the half-hearted attempts to dispossess Clodoaldo in the build up to this goal...I think Jairzinho's goal against England is just as good

@generalhans1 Team play, build-up, awareness of where the other players were at the time, skill culminating in an unstoppable shot. It's the best team goal scored at a World Cup- particularly when you remember it was scored in the final. If you want individual goals in the World Cup then Maradona against England in 86 is probably the best or Saeed Al-Owairan against Belgium in 94.
It's a team competition though and this is a team goal.
If you take a look at 00:05, Pelé did not even turn around to see if Carlos Alberto was there. Pelé just 'knew' it. That probably one of the most fantastic things you'll see.

Your comment just makes me wonder. Argumentum ad populum, look it up.
Now, I can assure you that most football fans do not know who Alfredo Di Stéfano is. That doesn't mean, however, that he isn't one of the best footballers ever. And yes, you're right on this one: Maradona's goal was insane. Carlos Alberto's goal is 'different.' You just can't compare them. And you have to see the whole play, not just the last passes (although Pelé's pass was magical).
pele the best ever by far. most goals, most assists, most won titles. and of course 5 world cups with brazil nacional team & santos. also, the pretending of century against uruguay in the semis and the header on banks' save against england!! pele o rey !
I love how Clodoaldo dribbles past four players even though he was playing as a defensive midfielder (I do know that he played as an attacking midfielder now and then for Santos though). @ojds, yeah but the occasion is everything. The world's best players, at the highest level, making something look so easy. And what about the audacious dribble that started the move? By a defender.... If you think an Accrington Stanley defender could pull off that kind of wizardry near his own box, you must have had a knock on the head. No offence.

@PhillyDippy5 You can think what you want but Maradona is a better person than Pele. Pele didn’t even go to Garrincha’s funeral in 1983 because he was jealous that he was not going to be the center of attention and that the people loved Garrincha while he was only admired.
@truvianni I'm spanish & you're american, i think i know a little bit more than you about football, even if you're a football fan because i'm a football fan too. We are World Champions in football and we have the 2 best football clubs ever. Maradona was probably the most gifted but that not means necesarily the best overall. I think the best football players ever were "La Máquina" of River Plate (you can google it), from the early 40's, and then Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas.
@truvianni The lucky of the winners. If Spain is a bad winner so the rest are creepy losers. Italy and Spain are friends anyway, Milan A.C. is 2nd after Real Madrid #1. 9 European Cups and 31 Ligas. Real won 7, 8 and 9 in 1998, 2000, 2002, don't say that is old.
No hables castellano.
WOW! Cant imagine people storming the pitch like that these days and literally taking the clothes of the players back! What i wouldnt do to take Pele's boots off after the game!
the only reason this goal is rated number one is because it sealed the world cup for brazil, i mean, don't get me wrong, but the goal certainly didn't take the best teamwork for any goal ever in the world cup...i mean, look at argentina's goal scored by cambiasso in the 2006 world cup versus serbia and montenegro, that was much better, maybe not as important as this, but a much better buildup
There will always be a discussion about the best goal ever.
What makes it the best goal? Is it the build up? The technique? The moment the goal was scored? In what kind of match is was scored?
There are many great goals. Argentinians will say Maradona vs England. Brazilians will say this one, the Dutch will say Van Basten "88. Bergkamp scored many great goals. Beckham vs Greece was awesome. I think there is no such thing as the best goal ever. There are just several great goals.
Being Scottish I can't support Scotland as we never play in the WC lol
So I always support Brazil, because of goals like this. Only Brazil play the most beautiful football, and it was Ronaldo who made me start, his beautiful football was the first I ever saw :-)
u guys gotta remember this was the 4° goal of Brazil in one of the most important world cup finals ever (the winner would be the first to be 3 times champion would have the joules rimet forever), everybody expected a very disputed game (especially after the very disputed match between italy and germany in th 1/2 final), so this goal represents brazil superiority and more than that: the superiority of artistical football, the beauty of just being better than your opponent individually and by team
@VidMusFun At this point the game was over! Brazil was winning 3-1 with 4 minutes left in the game and Italy knew all too well they were not going to score 2 goals in those 4 minutes to equalize it. Specially given how tired they were from their previous game against Germany and this is clear from the way they look dead on their feet. So taking this to consideration there is nothing all that spectacular about this goal.
first of all, if you think there's nothing spectacular about this goal, you don't know anything about football. This goal is a lesson of how to play the game. I can make a list of the spectacular things about it, for example: the fact that Clodoaldo dribbles four opponents in the beginning (which is not showed on this video) and the fact that Pelé didn't even have to look to the side to pass the ball cuz he knew c. alberto would be there.
@VidMusFun None of this changes my opinion. A lesson in football was what Italy gave Brazil in 82. Clodoaldo dribbled 2 oponents who all they did was stretchout their legs and the other 2 didnt even try to get the ball. Pele was playing from memory it was Tostao who told him to pass to his right. You have a right to your opinion and I respect it even if I do not agree but I have mine and nothing you say will change it so why argue futher? Have a nice day.
@VidMusFun I would say that they were equal. Brazil did not have to play 120 against Germany in the semifinal. They played against Uruguay who were not as good as Germany and a weaker team physcally. Also Brazil had the advantage of playing all their games up and till the final in the "Estadio Jalisco" in Guadalajara which was very strange and has never been seen since. The final was played in the Estadio Azteca
@VidMusFun you can say what you want but I would say they were about even after all their match against Uruguay was nowhere near as hard Italy's against Germany which was basically the same team which would go on to win the Euro in 72 and world cup in 74 but like I said that is what is so great to have different points of view and to respect all of them
whatever man, brazil's 58 and 70 teams are the best teams ever, so it's hard to prove any point against someone who's defending them, that's why u keep talking and i don't need to say anything.
@VidMusFun very true my friend ! if pele did not have those great players he would still win the world cup. he would win 1-0, 2-1 or 2-0 like maradona did. the big brazil's scores (4-1, 4-2, 3-1 etc) were because pele had great players. if maradona had them he would win 4-0 etc too !! but he had only valdano, buruchaga and maybe 1-2 more and that's why he used to win by small scores like 2-1, 2-0 or 1-0..so, this proves that pele would still win the mundial but with smaller scores :)
@VidMusFun UNFORTUNATELY COMMON PEOPLE CANNOT UNDERSTAND THAT....PELE WOULD HAVE WON THE WORLD CUPS ALL BY HIMSELF WITHOUT GREAT PLAYERS, WITH THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BEING THAT HE WOULD WIN BY SMALLER SCORES, LIKE MARADONA DID IN '86. THIS IS THE BEST PROOF. IF DIEGO HAD ALSO GREATER TEAMATES THEN HE WOULD ALSO HAVE WON 4-0 OR 4-1....!! PELE WON EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. HE EVEN WON HIS BRAZIL'S TEAMMATES IN BRAZILIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. YES ! THEY WERE HIS BEST CLIENTS INSIDE BRAZIL ! CHEERS !! :)
@truvianni I only originally put this up because that was the opinion on the television programme before the 2006 World Cup. I've kept it up because people seem to find it interesting and because it attracts some intelligent debate- sometimes. I would say that your comment is an example of intelligent discussion. Personally there are other goals I prefer and I think are better, but not many in the actual World Cup Final.
@thegranddilligaf I dont think it is a bad goal of course but I just take all aspects in to consideration and one of them is the score, how much time was left in the game and the mood on the field. Italy I might add was feeling bad at that moment Boninsegna who scored and was their best player was taken of the field in place of Rivera. Rivera didnt want to play because it really was late. In my opinion Italy's second goal against Germany in 82 was a great team goal involving several players
@truvianni If we're talking Germany and the World Cup, I'd have to say that Fischer's equaliser against France in 1982 is one of the best goals I've seen.
@thegranddilligaf I would have to agree with you that it was a spectacular goal. I always liked Klaus Fischer and his bicycle kick was spectalar not only by itself but the cirstances at the time down 2-3 in the second half of overtime does not get better the back header by Hrubesh was also good and the center by Littbarski. Actually Fischer had a great game and scored a great goal which was unjustly rulled off-sides when France was winning 3-1
@dunkindeeznutz they do this on a world cup final? when did ur national team ever scored 4 goals in a world cup final??? whats arsenal?? I DONT CARE ABOUT EUROPEAN DOMESTIC LEAGUE, we have our own league in BRASIL with all 100% BRASILIAN players!!!!
Beautiful team goal. The skill of Clodoaldo dribbling past the Italians reminds me of the great Rugby try scored by Gareth Edwards for the Barbarians v New Zealand All Blacks in 1973, with Phil Bennett's sidesteps at the beginning.
LOVE IT. It's football genius, I've seen transcripts of the attck's build-up and it's so well thought of and so well performed it gives me the chills.
Fantastic goal, such speed and teamwork....however.......Michael Owen against Argentina,Maradona against England were better goals in my opinion. But hey, only a fool could begrudge Brazil's 1970 team an honour..
Carlos Alberto is selected in the Football Legends team! See the other players in the cool video on my youtube channel (or copy paste the code at the end watch?v=jQPk9WA80Ac)
falem portugues, nos somos portugueses,eu sou portugues uns sao brasileiros outros cabo verdianos outros angolanos outros moçambicanos outros de macau, etc.
I love how after Pele makes his perfectly weighted pass, he just starts walking, as if to say "That was perfect, and Alberto will score now." Absolute magic!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is the most over rated goal of all time...Maicon scored a goal similar to this against North Korea. i don't see what so great about this goal.....I'll agree that the build up was amazing, but the strike itself wasn't all that
@thegranddilligaf Agreed, along with a well-placed, smoothly-hit finish. Brazil built up something like 40 odd passes with Italy not getting a look-in previous to this goal
And the assist is nearly as good as the goal in this case, great vision by Pele to know what Alberto was thinking.
@s4f3m0 Look fact of the matter is the goal is overrated because: 1. the side who scored it (apparently the greatest of all time) and 2 the situation it was scored in (World cup) Argentina's goal in 06, in my opinion was better, let's face facts. If Accrington Stanley score a goal identical to this nobody would even give a crap (if you're not from England Accrington are a lower league side). Thus concluding my point that this goal is overrated.
Nice security. Good grief. Anyway, best goal ever. First the great dribbling, then the nice long pass, then again, nice ball skills. Then the team work to feed Pele, and have him wait until just the right time to feed Carlos. Then the amazing blast by Carlos. All on the biggest possible stage, against the giants of Italy. Any goal you'll ever see, will be competing for second. First is pretty secure. Unlike Carlos from those fans. Seriously, security? Anyone working security here?
the bbcs coverage is really abysmal at this years world cup a bunch of sixth formes could do the same minus the waste of money on over produced nonsense
Undoubtably the greatest World Cup side ever, this goal will live on forever. To win the World Cup 3 times with such a goal, some things were meant to happen & this is one of them. The 1970 Brazil team personified the art of the Beautiful Game.
@POPeyes96 The greatest goals are, by definition, ones that are scored on the world stage. For that reason domestic league goals for example are, in my view, to be discounted.
@hairymarx ryan giggs vs arsenal fa cup semi final replay 1999 - arsenal had one of the best defenders in the world that season . "Greatest Goal of all time"
@hairymarx Yeah the greatest goal ever..Especially the preparation..Just like a chess combinations running over 4 stations and Boom. .This Brazil team is still the greatest ever..
@hairymarx Maradona did it much better against England and all by himself and not against a team that was already tired and loosing 3-1 with only 4 minutes left in the game but against a solid English defense and one of the greatest goalkeepers ever, Peter Shilton. You think what you want but to me this does not even compare to Maradona's goal which is like Beethoven's 9th symphony. A masterpiece.
this si so overrated, Cambiasso's goal in 06 was much better than this, more elaboration, subtle passes, back heels and many more touches on the ball, not to mention that Italy's defense in this game was totally demoralized. Clearly overrated, good PR from our brazilian couseins..we look forward to Messi breaking Lucio's hip this summer...
@MarceloHardoy Cambiasso's goal in 2006 was only in the first stage against a a very weak Serbia, in a humiliating 6x0. Brazilian 70's goal was against Italy in a World Cup FINAL (won by Brazil) with Pele, Tostao, Jairzinho, Gerson, Rivelino, Clodoaldo, Torres, and not with Cambiasso, Gonzales, Saviola, Crespo, Tevez and other nobodies in the history of football. And I saw how Messi broke Lucio's hip in the semifinal of the Champions League...
Yes,it was a great goal, but many of the passes were going square across the backline.9 of the 11 players on the pitch were involved in this goal. And the passes were progressing forward. Also, this was in a World Cup final, against a strong Italy side, known as a defensive side, not against 2 small nations that were arguing outside of football
Never thought much to this goal. Nothing truly amazing about it. It was all power and a bit of luck. I can think of ten goals better than this occassion. But the people have spoken.
It s a nice goal... it involves more teamplay and passing, rather than an individual action, and I think that s why many ppl don t like it. It kinda reminds me the Cambiasso goal against Serbia & Montenegro...
I've written an article about how players that succeed in World Cups deserve all the plaudits they get, but that it is also important to remember the world class players in average international sides. It's on my blog, MoronsTalkAboutFootball on Wordpress. Search MoronsTalkAboutFootball on google and my blog should be the first result. The post is called The World Cup; reasons to be glad of its imminence (1) ... Have a read if you like.
maybe the wack is not such of a big deal. even a 12th grader can do it. but maybe they take consideration of all the passing. teamwork with all the players
The Brazilian offence was in a class of its own expecially in this game. Italy was known as the masters of defence at the time for they had the best defence in the world. Any yet Brazil shredded them to pieces!
Great goal, however, he should be putting the ball into the box not shooting... Football is about percentages and putting the ball in the 6 yard box gives a better chance of scoring

PhillyDippy5 8 months ago
No hables castellano.

Whats so good about that?! Better goals than that are scored in the premier league every week!
princeofpointless 10 months ago
the only reason this goal is rated number one is because it sealed the world cup for brazil, i mean, don't get me wrong, but the goal certainly didn't take the best teamwork for any goal ever in the world cup...i mean, look at argentina's goal scored by cambiasso in the 2006 world cup versus serbia and montenegro, that was much better, maybe not as important as this, but a much better buildup
CashSmeller 10 months ago
Best soccer team ever! there will never be another one like that.
iceberg220 11 months ago
There will always be a discussion about the best goal ever.
What makes it the best goal? Is it the build up? The technique? The moment the goal was scored? In what kind of match is was scored?
There are many great goals. Argentinians will say Maradona vs England. Brazilians will say this one, the Dutch will say Van Basten "88. Bergkamp scored many great goals. Beckham vs Greece was awesome. I think there is no such thing as the best goal ever. There are just several great goals.

u guys gotta remember this was the 4° goal of Brazil in one of the most important world cup finals ever (the winner would be the first to be 3 times champion would have the joules rimet forever), everybody expected a very disputed game (especially after the very disputed match between italy and germany in th 1/2 final), so this goal represents brazil superiority and more than that: the superiority of artistical football, the beauty of just being better than your opponent individually and by team
VidMusFun 1 year ago 11
@VidMusFun At this point the game was over! Brazil was winning 3-1 with 4 minutes left in the game and Italy knew all too well they were not going to score 2 goals in those 4 minutes to equalize it. Specially given how tired they were from their previous game against Germany and this is clear from the way they look dead on their feet. So taking this to consideration there is nothing all that spectacular about this goal.
truvianni 8 months ago
@truvianni
first of all, if you think there's nothing spectacular about this goal, you don't know anything about football.
VidMusFun 8 months ago
@VidMusFun None of this changes my opinion. A lesson in football was what Italy gave Brazil in 82. Clodoaldo dribbled 2 oponents who all they did was stretchout their legs and the other 2 didnt even try to get the ball. Pele was playing from memory it was Tostao who told him to pass to his right. You have a right to your opinion and I respect it even if I do not agree but I have mine and nothing you say will change it so why argue futher? Have a nice day.
truvianni 8 months ago
@truvianni
And about what u said, that just reinforces what i had said before, cuz it shows that Brazil was also physically superior than Italy!
VidMusFun 8 months ago
@VidMusFun I would say that they were equal. Brazil did not have to play 120 against Germany in the semifinal. They played against Uruguay who were not as good as Germany and a weaker team physcally. Also Brazil had the advantage of playing all their games up and till the final in the "Estadio Jalisco" in Guadalajara which was very strange and has never been seen since. The final was played in the Estadio Azteca
truvianni 8 months ago
@VidMusFun you can say what you want but I would say they were about even after all their match against Uruguay was nowhere near as hard Italy's against Germany which was basically the same team which would go on to win the Euro in 72 and world cup in 74 but like I said that is what is so great to have different points of view and to respect all of them
truvianni 8 months ago
@truvianni
whatever man, brazil's 58 and 70 teams are the best teams ever, so it's hard to prove any point against someone who's defending them, that's why u keep talking and i don't need to say anything.
"the truth needs no explanation".
VidMusFun 8 months ago
@VidMusFun very true my friend ! if pele did not have those great players he would still win the world cup. he would win 1-0, 2-1 or 2-0 like maradona did. the big brazil's scores (4-1, 4-2, 3-1 etc) were because pele had great players. if maradona had them he would win 4-0 etc too !! but he had only valdano, buruchaga and maybe 1-2 more and that's why he used to win by small scores like 2-1, 2-0 or 1-0..so, this proves that pele would still win the mundial but with smaller scores :)
norsunny 7 months ago
CHEERS !! :)
norsunny 7 months ago
@truvianni I only originally put this up because that was the opinion on the television programme before the 2006 World Cup. I've kept it up because people seem to find it interesting and because it attracts some intelligent debate- sometimes. I would say that your comment is an example of intelligent discussion. Personally there are other goals I prefer and I think are better, but not many in the actual World Cup Final.
thegranddilligaf 8 months ago
@thegranddilligaf I dont think it is a bad goal of course but I just take all aspects in to consideration and one of them is the score, how much time was left in the game and the mood on the field. Italy I might add was feeling bad at that moment Boninsegna who scored and was their best player was taken of the field in place of Rivera. Rivera didnt want to play because it really was late. In my opinion Italy's second goal against Germany in 82 was a great team goal involving several players
truvianni 8 months ago
@truvianni If we're talking Germany and the World Cup, I'd have to say that Fischer's equaliser against France in 1982 is one of the best goals I've seen.
thegranddilligaf 8 months ago
@thegranddilligaf I would have to agree with you that it was a spectacular goal. I always liked Klaus Fischer and his bicycle kick was spectalar not only by itself but the cirstances at the time down 2-3 in the second half of overtime does not get better the back header by Hrubesh was also good and the center by Littbarski. Actually Fischer had a great game and scored a great goal which was unjustly rulled off-sides when France was winning 3-1

This truly was the best WC goal ever scored!
In this moment football was turned into an art form!
Although Carlos Alberto gets it wrong when he says that Wilson Piazza beat 5 players, it was actually Clodoaldo who beat the 5 Italians.
Pele's lay off was exceptional. The final strike was simply the cherry on an otherwise perfect cake!

@thegranddilligaf if you're talking about the build up then yeah it's a good goal, but the strike itself wasn't all that
ojdslikdog123 1 year ago
@thegranddilligaf Agreed, along with a well-placed, smoothly-hit finish. Brazil built up something like 40 odd passes with Italy not getting a look-in previous to this goal
And the assist is nearly as good as the goal in this case, great vision by Pele to know what Alberto was thinking.
This was the best Brazil team of all time

@ojdslikdog123 What? The strike was like a bullet into the bottom corner.
srobertms89 1 year ago
@ojdslikdog123 So, what do you propose? Should he put in risk all that wonderful collective build up...
- trying to perform a more personalystic, selfish and improbable goal?
- against the mighty Italy?
- a goal that he never scored (before or after) in any other World Cup's match?
- in the few last minutes of a World Cup's final?
- right about get to homeland the Julles Rimet Trophy for the eternity ?
- as captain of one of the greatest teams of the history of Football ASSOCIATION!?
Get off!
s4f3m0 10 months ago
@s4f3m0 Look fact of the matter is the goal is overrated because: 1. the side who scored it (apparently the greatest of all time) and 2 the situation it was scored in (World cup) Argentina's goal in 06, in my opinion was better, let's face facts. If Accrington Stanley score a goal identical to this nobody would even give a crap (if you're not from England Accrington are a lower league side). Thus concluding my point that this goal is overrated.

KanuttePIKK 1 year ago
Nice security. Good grief. Anyway, best goal ever. First the great dribbling, then the nice long pass, then again, nice ball skills. Then the team work to feed Pele, and have him wait until just the right time to feed Carlos. Then the amazing blast by Carlos. All on the biggest possible stage, against the giants of Italy. Any goal you'll ever see, will be competing for second. First is pretty secure. Unlike Carlos from those fans. Seriously, security? Anyone working security here?

this si so overrated, Cambiasso's goal in 06 was much better than this, more elaboration, subtle passes, back heels and many more touches on the ball, not to mention that Italy's defense in this game was totally demoralized. Clearly overrated, good PR from our brazilian couseins..we look forward to Messi breaking Lucio's hip this summer...
MarceloHardoy 1 year ago
@MarceloHardoy Cambiasso's goal in 2006 was only in the first stage against a a very weak Serbia, in a humiliating 6x0. Brazilian 70's goal was against Italy in a World Cup FINAL (won by Brazil) with Pele, Tostao, Jairzinho, Gerson, Rivelino, Clodoaldo, Torres, and not with Cambiasso, Gonzales, Saviola, Crespo, Tevez and other nobodies in the history of football. And I saw how Messi broke Lucio's hip in the semifinal of the Champions League...

Get the most beautifull assists from the TEAM!!
The most beautiful and perfect passes and assists are not important anymore??
