  • Good thing they are Canadian. If they were from any other Country they would have wrote each other off and broken up by now.

  • my grand father taught him his bar mitzvah! HOW COOL!! my family gets vip to most consorts

  • i wonder if he ever poked lifesons eye out accidentally on stage during a concert.

  • I see Geddy's voice to be a powerful poetic masterpiece. Most heavy metal bands now think they need to scream to give songs "power". Geddy proves that power in music runs deeper than that. To me, the most powerful voice in music. Both literally and poetically. I honestly believe the whole screaming thing most heavy bands pull off now is just an illusion to cover up not having the talent. To this day "Closer to the Heart" sends me chills.

  • hes sexy to me with his big nose !!

  • Canadian.

  • Was that Donald Sutherlands voice narrating?

  • @lem0n2lime

He won't say who he is or who he represents. Just call him X.

  • @lem0n2lime

It does sound exactly like him alright, he has such a distinctive voice. If I was in charge of hiring people to do voiceovers for music shows on Canadian TV, I wouldn't hire some guy who went around flawlessly mimicking Canada's most famous actor of the time.

  • one of my biggest bass heroes!

  • The Rickenbacker bass and Geddy Lee, a perfect combo, heck that Ric should be an equal member of the group and receive equal billing

  • haha! what a bunch of godly goofballs!

  • I wonder if kiss ever thought to themselves... wow our opening band can play stuff we'll never be able to play.... huh. I know they progressed with time but damn their stuff is just so technically proficient!

  • @camair2112 AMEN

  • Recognize the narrator? I think it's Donald Sutherland...too funny...

  • "Closer to the Heart was a pretty simple tune to write."

Geddy, you have HEARD that bassline you wrote for that song right? The complicated as shit one that you also sing over? That's not simple at all, YOU RULE!!

  • @DelDuio couldnt say it any better

  • Sounds like one of those beer commercials but back then they made something worthy of that seriousness!!!

  • Rush deserves more credit then they get. bands like metallica really piss me off because they are soooo much better in the eyes of the public then bands like rush who truly deserve fame.

  • @BestMattBeast Not saying you're wrong, necessarily...but despite what "the public" may or may not think, I'm pretty sure Rush is one of the most celebrated and respected acts in the entire history of the rock 'n roll, going back to when the term was first coined. You'd have a hard time finding a drummer, and a harder time finding a bassist (including the likes of Les Claypool) who wouldn't mention Neil Peart or Geddy Lee as an influence and/or example of the sort of talent...(cont'd)

  • @BestMattBeast (cont'd) ...and level of musicianship to which they aspire. And I have to wonder how many other bands have been actively writing and performing music (and evolving musically) without a lineup change for 36 years and remain relevant. Ditto the number of bands who can abruptly drop off the radar for years at a time, then reappear with their ability to put butts in seats intact should they decide to take their act on the road one more time.

  • Where do you think Ged gets his superhuman powers from? his nose....nose power baby!!!! woot...RUSH RULEZ!!

  • This dude, is a dynamic GOD.

  • I think thats Donald Sutherland narrating @ 1:02, He must be a Rush fan too!

  • God I love Geddys hair here.

  • Closer to the heart was an anthem for Geddy's hope for what might have happended for mankind. it's a bit naive but of course what else could resonate with that generation... they saw so much hope.

  • Geddy Lee>All other bassist

    GEDDY LEE=JESUS

  • Donald Sutherland!

  • @prinznevsky YES! I thought that sounded like him.

  • I so happy and surprised geddy smoked although i'm glad he quit i'm sure he hates it and I wish him a long life. Rush seems like one of those bands that evil goody two shoes and straight edgers would try to claim because they are clean and intellectual. score another one for our side you soulless nothings. Maybe micheal bolton & vnilla ice nurtured their musical genius with your healthy lifestyle & it's petty bigotry.. non smokers' elastic lungs R just big enough for my dick. good clip too

  • @healthhaterxx Keep up the stupid cliches bud. Enjoy your smoke.

  • @healthhaterxx smoking is also horrible for your voice

  • twatter says: wishes hair had me like that

  • man the 70's 80's and 90's rock was awsome and some 60's but the 200's suck of course not counting rush no the crappy pop music with garbage lyrics and electronic voice mode's and computer music just i hate todays music i will end it at that

    long live rush

  • ok, what the FUCK is that noise at 1:00

  • @FrankSenese Geddy stepped on a gerbil.

  • @misanthrope2112 i almost pissed my pants laughing there... xD

  • @FrankSenese LOL I wonder the same thing.

  • Nice touch with Donald Sutherland narrating ....

  • Geddy, as bowing to great countries has become chic'

    ...

please twll me about asking social healthcare has ascended Canada. Your ACCELERATED WISH IS MY COMMAND

... perhaps the only nope note to you has been forsaken and second said.

  • The song around 0.23 is ''closer to the heart'' from Farewell to kings '77

  • whats the name of the song that plays around 0:23??? ive heard it before and love it but never knew the name PLZ TELL ME

  • closer to the heart.

  • much thanks :)

  • Is that Donald Sutherland narrating?

  • No, Julio Franco is.

  • What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?

  • I know him... and he does.

  • He sings in his falsetto.

  • Closer to your House!

  • Out of the whole band Peart was the biggest smoker. He used to smoke alot and probably still does.

  • Rush always reminds me of trailer park boys

  • Hmmm...It's not "Rush," but "Ruuuuuuuush." XD You gotta love that weary sigh. x]

  • You cant find me a singer in current music who even touches Geddy lol .. not with singing .. playing bass .. songwriting .. hell even keyboards

  • Even with singing. He STILL has the range and power, well into his fifties.

  • @vinnykster dont forget effects petals too and i agree 4 insturments in one song is hard i can barley play one lol sorry i suck at spelling

  • @vinnykster

exactly man I mean he has.. found his voice, especially now since he stopped

the 'high pitched screaming', back in the early days..

his voice is now like 'wailing cry sound'.

that combined with is powerful bass playin and triggering

    keyboards/song writing.

is what makes him the most talented musician today!!

  • @vinnykster steve harris?

  • @aidan92m harris is one of my influences but geddy is better overall.singing and playing is a whole other ballgame man on BASS belive me!

  • @aidan92m steve may be great but its all triplets, way too predictable. geddy is thee man,,,face it.

  • @MRCJCOLLINS ah now, mr.harris is good :O, geddy is fucking great aswell

  • @aidan92m SORRY, the "who's better argument is pointless. my bad. check out the geddy interview 79. he LOOKS like steve...NAMASTE...

  • @MRCJCOLLINS

    Exactly!!

  • @vinnykster neil peart writes the songs man

  • @vinnykster Liam or Noel gallagher

  • @vinnykster True, except for sonwriting. There's that guy named Neil Peart for that department :D

  • How do you spell "come"?? Another thing...don't post on here anymore.....you're such an immature low life.....

  • Donald Sutherland narration? Cool.

  • This interview with Geddy was included in a three part Canadian music documentary titled 'Heart Of Gold' which was broadcasted on the CBC Superspecial (aired Dec 12, 13, 14) of 1982. Donald Sutherland was narrator of the show.

  • lol i like geddys big nose lol but dont get me wrong hes a great musician and his nose makes him look kewler lol

  • His nose is of a Roman God!!!!

  • @NEKROCLAUS Well, the big nose is just part of his heritage (he's a Jew). Nice interview.

  • Alex smoked...i saw him smokin a cig when they came to Pittsburgh

  • pot or tobacco?

  • Hey, Bandi1013!

Alex says that he quit smoking cigarettes a while back. But he does still have a problem with second-hand smoke.

His second hand still wont put the damn things down.

  • Geddy Smoked, Neil Smoked, and Alex idk

  • Does geddy Lee smoke? Omg does geddy lee smoke, it looks like he smokes, thanks for confirming he smokes, yes it looks like geddy lee smokes, does Alex smoke? What about Neil, do the whole band smoke ?! omg omg

    please.. STF UP !

  • Comment removed

  • The comments for this video were some of the funniest I have ever seen. haha.

Anyway, they ALL have smoked at one time or another- this I know for sure. Not sure if Neil or Alex smoke still, but I am fairly sure Geddy probably quit years ago.

  • Is that Donald Sutherland doing the voiceover?

  • God damn I want a Rickenbacker. Look how pimpin he lok with that beast. Geddy the super pimp, moarliak.

  • I like their complex songs, personally.

  • FREAKIN GENIUS. . . the contribution to music can be equal to the greatests BEETHOVEN, BACH ETC

  • Simpler songs that stand up better, hope they do something like that on the next album

  • Love this!!!!

  • donald sutherland narrating a rush doc? There is a god

  • I never knew that Geddy was/is a smoker.

  • speaking of which...i wonder if he'd still be able to sing the high notes in the old songs if he wasn't/isn't a smoker

  • donald sutherland-narrator

  • Ugh... singers smoking = fail.

  • Just about everyone smoked back then.

  • Except Lemmy!!

    Lemmy+smoking= Epic win!

  • Is Geddy Lee really a smoker?

  • Well, he's doing it here. I dunno about today.

  • No, not cigarettes anyway. He gave that up back around 1990 or so I think it was.

  • Good to see this! GO GEDDY!!!

  • GEDDY DAMN LEE MAN!

  • I thought the narrator was Neil for a second.

  • The last line Lee says is just genius and they did just that.

  • Ha- Try playing "The Main Monkey Business."

  • Wait! Geddy smoke(s/ed)!? Tell me he stopped!

  • Who cares

    What a stupid comment !

what does this got to do with music ?

......typical of a health freak who has no talent and do nothing else but spending his whole life bugging people on how they should behave.

  • You're a moron. I only care because I love his voice. And I smoke too so don't assume.

  • im not so sure anything can ruin geddys voice. Considering hes god, he could just make himself a new one identical to the last anyway lol

  • Geddy stopped after the Signals tour.

  • Comment removed

  • HAHA! at 1:00 fellow canadian Donald Sutherland exagerates "Ruuuusssshhh!"

Great touch to the documentary and dedication to the boys/country/cause!!! LOL!!

  • what are you talking about canada is another country!

  • fuk u

  • To jfmayer: "so what" what?

  • I love Canada. It's almost like visiting another country.

  • Geddy looks alot older here

  • hahahah there is no "Canadian Sound."

  • Absolutely. I was about to say the same. Music transcends everything.

  • What an awesome, inspiring story of prevelance & determination! RUSH w/out a doubt is the hardest working, most consistant band in the history of Rock & roll!

    Long live the three wisemen!

    Dirk, Lersxt & Pratt!

  • I agree with you completely.Makes me wish I would have had a clue at a much much younger age.I didnt get introduced to RUSH till I was about 16,Im 40 now.And didnt start playing the guitar till I was 23.If i knew then what I know now,I would have started playing at 12 and had taken it more seriously. Not that I would or could ever be as great as geddy. But It would have been nice to have goten started much sooner.Thats the key,get started early, and then grow into your art.Glad I started at least.

  • Nobody does this anymore. No local band, anyhow.

Every local act I know wants to be Rush overnight WITHOUOUT putting in the effort.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong. But at 1:01 did I just hear Donald Sutherland's voice as the narrator?

  • Yeah, that has to be him.

  • I'm not sure but it does sound a lot like him

  • Ahhh i thought it was donald sutherland!

  • I said closer to the heartttt.... YEAH!

  • Rush isn´t only great musicians, techniqually and melodic, but along with Peart´s lyrics they make thier music separate from all others.

  • "Shapes and forms against the norm

Against the run of the mill

    Swimming against the stream

Life in two dimensions is a mass production scheme"

  • This is a nugget of pure gold thanks for posting ! Nice take. Caught the boys in Boston in the summer, jeez they know how to rock! Go Gedddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

  • This is Donald Sutherland's voice narrating! LOL. God RUSH rules.

  • I listen to Spirit of Radio firstly in 1994. That was my first contact with Rush's music. Then I saw Subdivisions video and had a deja vu. I kept having deja vu while getting to know several other Rush's song. But the thing is that I used to live in a very very small city in Brazil, there was only one radio station that used to play just country music.

  • Very cool Epleite that your from Brazil :-) Rush in Rio was a very cool momumental event for Rush :-)

  • Yes it was. As hilarious as it can be, at the time of Rush in Rio I was in Toronto, the very city of Rush! At least I could watch them at the Air Canada Centre.

  • how old is this

  • Looks like from the Signals period, so right after Moving Pictures.

  • A sweet sweet thing...

  • I first heard these guys in '76, (By-Tor and the Snow Dog) and saw them in KC supporting " All The World's A Stage". They have been my favorite band since.

  • :( A Farewell To Kings. Rush is amazing they look so young in this video. want to see them in concert before it's all over..

  • liam the yoblit must have done it all

  • Sailing into destiny ...

    RUSH - Canada's Greatest Export !!

  • Narrator reminds me of Burl Ives...

  • The narrator is Donald Sutherland.

  • who cares

    most north americans have

on musical terms, the only thing that matters is that geddy has the sexiest fucking voice in the world(thats just my opinion)

  • I never thought of it that way because I have always thought that Neil was the sexy one, but now that I think about it Geddy does have a sexy voice, probably the best voice aside Robert Plant, David King and Steve Marriott

  • Dave King,He is imo the better voice

  • Maybe when he's not singing...

  • wat song is this?

  • Closer To The Heart off of their 5th album, A Farewell To Kings.

  • Thanks for incredibly interesting video!

  • Wow I love it when people dig up stuff like this!! More Please!! :-)))

  • you suck asshole

  • okay i will

  • Your opinion sucks

  • Without his voice, Rush wouldn't be what it is :)

  • Is that Donald Sutherland narrating? Sounds like him.

  • Pretty sure it is. After all he's also Canadian and likely a fan. Rrrrrush!

  • Sutherland was a disc jockey in canada at age 15

  • I was thinking that was Sutherland. I wonder when that was recorded

  • Gedee Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart....Rush

  • thank you einstein
