I see Geddy's voice to be a powerful poetic masterpiece. Most heavy metal bands now think they need to scream to give songs "power". Geddy proves that power in music runs deeper than that. To me, the most powerful voice in music. Both literally and poetically. I honestly believe the whole screaming thing most heavy bands pull off now is just an illusion to cover up not having the talent. To this day "Closer to the Heart" sends me chills.
On the 10th of Jaunary 2011 a worldwide boycott of youtube will take place. Which means for one whole day no-one will visit youtube. We want VEVO (and other companies) and their f*cking ads OUT. Do your part sharing this comment on as many videos as possible and give this one a thumbs up!
It does sound exactly like him alright, he has such a distinctive voice. If I was in charge of hiring people to do voiceovers for music shows on Canadian TV, I wouldn't hire some guy who went around flawlessly mimicking Canada's most famous actor of the time.
I wonder if kiss ever thought to themselves... wow our opening band can play stuff we'll never be able to play.... huh. I know they progressed with time but damn their stuff is just so technically proficient!
"Closer to the Heart was a pretty simple tune to write."
Geddy, you have HEARD that bassline you wrote for that song right? The complicated as shit one that you also sing over? That's not simple at all, YOU RULE!!
Rush deserves more credit then they get. bands like metallica really piss me off because they are soooo much better in the eyes of the public then bands like rush who truly deserve fame.
@BestMattBeast Not saying you're wrong, necessarily...but despite what "the public" may or may not think, I'm pretty sure Rush is one of the most celebrated and respected acts in the entire history of the rock 'n roll, going back to when the term was first coined. You'd have a hard time finding a drummer, and a harder time finding a bassist (including the likes of Les Claypool) who wouldn't mention Neil Peart or Geddy Lee as an influence and/or example of the sort of talent...(cont'd)
@BestMattBeast (cont'd) ...and level of musicianship to which they aspire. And I have to wonder how many other bands have been actively writing and performing music (and evolving musically) without a lineup change for 36 years and remain relevant. Ditto the number of bands who can abruptly drop off the radar for years at a time, then reappear with their ability to put butts in seats intact should they decide to take their act on the road one more time.
Closer to the heart was an anthem for Geddy's hope for what might have happended for mankind. it's a bit naive but of course what else could resonate with that generation... they saw so much hope.
I so happy and surprised geddy smoked although i'm glad he quit i'm sure he hates it and I wish him a long life. Rush seems like one of those bands that evil goody two shoes and straight edgers would try to claim because they are clean and intellectual. score another one for our side you soulless nothings. Maybe micheal bolton & vnilla ice nurtured their musical genius with your healthy lifestyle & it's petty bigotry.. non smokers' elastic lungs R just big enough for my dick. good clip too
