Why say it's not 'actually there' when actuality is actually what we're seeing? Why confuse thousands of people and fill their minds with a lasting and cynical impression just because the sun appears, from something ELSE, to not be there? Isn't what actually matters what we're seeing right now with our eyes? They'll put any old shit on this show just to get Oohs and Aahs from people who have too much spare time.
While I absolutely adore Stephen Fry, I wonder if the show wasn't pitched to the producers with "Its basically Stephen gets to be a know-it-all prat infront of mild celebrities, making them all feel dumb."
If you watch the making of QI they say that they wanted to get Michael Palin as the host but he didn't accept. Stehpen only got into the equation when they were just about to film the pilot and he was only supposed to be in the pilot. They probably didn't have his name in the pitch at all.
@RobDavisMovies The orientation of the tilt moves with the seasons, so what you're suggesting is not valid. If you take two points equidistant from the equator, the lowest angle of each would be exactly the same; the one in the north on or about Dec 21, and the one in the south on or about Jun 21.
Besides, the horizon is not a actual physical thing, it is something that we perceive and therefore the sun is behind the horizon at the exact moment that we see it disappearing behind the horizon.
@ElzoSmid1 Of course the horizon is a physical thing, we live on a planet that is (roughly) spherical. The horizon is the point at which there is no more planet left to look at.
@ElzoSmid1 That's a very limited definition of a "physical thing". Anyway, to the viewer the horizon is the line where the earth ends and is no longer visible (I explained this). If this line is extended out to infinity then the earth can indeed be "below the horizon" yet still be visible due to gravitational effects. The horizon is not simple "something we perceive".
@deadpassive "the line where the earth ends" you know as I do, that the word doesn't really end there, its the line where the world that is visible to us ends, 100% perception.
@ElzoSmid1 I think you know I did not mean that the world ends there - it cannot end because it is a sphere! You're right, it is the line where the visible earth ends - but it is an Actual Line. One can draw a line on the surface of a sphere which marks the point where visibility ends as seen from a given position. Again, it is a physical, actual position.
@ElzoSmid1 the horizon is the point at which the curvature of the earth makes you unable to view land or sea beyond it. thereforebased on your position the horizon has a physical location you could arrive to but would no longer be considered the horizon when you reach it
Wouldn't the sun technically have set 8 minutes before that moment? As far as I can tell, Stephen didn't take into account the 8 minutes it takes for the sun's light to reach us.
@ZondaFRoadster No, because the sun isn't actually moving the earth is spinning. therefore the sun that is getting to us was sent 8 mins ago but was coming from the exact same location, we have just spun arround so that it looks like it was coming from a different location.
@FloatLikeEuripides Of course the Sun is moving. It moves at about 200 kilometers each second around the centre of our galaxy which is most likely a supermassive black hole. It orbits the centre of the milky way once every 225 million years or 1 cosmic year.
@ZondaFRoadster No, because the light that hits the earth is from exactly where the sun is at that point, just the picture of it that we see is 8mins old but the sun is still in the same position that it is when the light hits the atmosphere.
@ZondaFRoadster Yes, but technically the sun never moves, so it can't drop below the horizon. So it's all about what we can see, so the 8 minutes aren't counted.
@dwarduk2 Okay, should have re-phrased that. The sun doesn't move (at least not to any degree the makes a difference) in relation to our solar system, with the sun at the centre at the other planets circling it.
this is how 5th grade kids would react to this piece of info which is probably 10th-11th grade physics (refraction of light). 'complete and utter denial'
i sure robert webb is quite used to listening to a posh sounding intellectual telling him clever sounding things. i wonder who would win the battle of wits....mitchell or fry xD
I know it's a joke but he's acting very childish. It's attitude like this that increases the ignorance of mankind. People don't want to be wrong and they are willing to deny facts to get around it.
@Lether52 - oh for goodness sake! QI is watched by people with brains, who can tell the difference between ACTING and reality. If you want to be treated like an idiot, there's plenty of other tv material out there for you.
@marpetpet I think you got me wrong. :D I said I know it's a joke. It was just an observation in general. This particular part just reminded me of such people who are actually like that. QI, on the other hand, is an funny and entertaining show.
@damarh I assume the answer is helical, since the width of a helix remains constant. I imagine that one of them said "spiral" which would be incorrect, since a spiral increases in width as it gets further away from the central starting point, which would mean the staircase would have to get wider as it got higher up.
I'm wondering about Alan's comment at 2:29 about sunstrike. Why would it occur in New Zealand more than, say, central Europe, when NZ is between the latitudes of Geneva and Casablanca, just in the southern hemisphere? Can't be due to their position so "far down on the planet".
Does this mean the physical location of the horizon is extended by the bending of light? By this I mean if we were to lose all the atmosphere, yes the sun would set sooner but our horizon would also look closer...?
@crudip No, the horizon is only about 3 miles away if you're standing upright, so there's not enough air in the way to bend the light. Furthermore, since you and the horizon are already in atmosphere, there wouldn't be much bending of light at all anyway.
yep.. the sun actually goes away halfway down.. i paused vid at start but this is why people claim to see water in a desert as the sky meets the surface of the sand in the distance because of our eyes it's forced to overflow basically. also the shimmering from the heat helps a lot
a similarity of this is hold a tube to your eye as if to look through a telescope, keeping both eyes open bring our other hand in front of your other eye.
@Imyournewpeppep Fair point. For example, they said on QI that using just the 26 letters of the alphabet, there are over 19000 3-letter codes for airports around the World (e.g. Heathrow = LHR). However, there are only 17576 possible combinations! And in fact, there are actually only 9476 airports in the World anyway. I know - I should get out more.
Oh, if only the word "lens" was used. I assume the misunderstanding is for comic effect since they're all smart (you have to be to do comedy.) Also mirages aren't "images of water" it's "images of sky." Of course water often looks like sky for obvious reasons.
@Frederf220 he says images of water because it is an image that appears to look like water. a photo of a house is actually just coloured photographic paper, but that doesn't mean it's not ALSO an image of a house.
The obvious answer would be "spiral" but that resulted in a buzzer for Webb. It turned out to be helical (i.e. a helix). Spiral staircases get wider as you move up the stairs, helices stay the same width.
Ronnie Ancona is a gorgeous, gorgeous woman - beautiful, hilarious and smart. Why'd she have to go and get married? I was perfectly prepared to wait for her. Sigh.
@pant1979 I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks in the UK a few years ago, and I don't remember seing a flat horizon. There were always hills, trees or buildings on the horizon. I've just realised that this is a generic sunset shot, so just ignore me.
@duffgirl13 :) I'm Aussie. That there was always something on the horizion, it was so green, the buildings, the languages, the history and that it rained the entire time I was there made me fall in love with the place. I should probably explain that it had barely rained where I am in over two years when I visited Britain. Enjoy your country, it's not perfect, but it is beautiful!
@verticalsmurf hi :) i love aussies!!! i do love my country and im very proud of it (and yes it is far from perfect yet where isnt ;) ) never been to Australia yet half of Britain seems to be moving there so i should come and see what the fuss is about some day;)
@duffgirl13 - I know alot of Aussies who are moving to the UK to get away from here. I have never met a Pom who wasn't happy to be here! If you get down here for a visit, seriously, don't skimp on the sunscreen, the sun is different here. We are the skin cancer capital of the world. It's better that you enjoy your trip and go home with a spray tan than spend a week in a burns unit because you spent 3 hours on the beach without sunscreen. And if a bloke smells like booze, don't trust him.
@verticalsmurf I'm pretty sure everything you just said can be resolved with a bit of common sense XD like if a bloke smells like booze, dont trust him... why does that have to apply to an aussie bloke if I saw a guy promising me my wildest dreams and he stunk of booze I think walking the other way is the best solution XD
This is neglecting the fact that it takes 8 minutes for the sun's light to reach us, meaning the sun is another FOUR sun-widths ahead of where it appears.

Hahaha, well nothing is as it seems when science comes into play.

Weirdly enough, he was far too early, depending on which sunset they're talking about.
Arenlor 2 months ago
Is that sunset even possible in Britain? The horizon is flat.

@verticalsmurf wtf??
pant1979 2 months ago
@pant1979 I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks in the UK a few years ago, and I don't remember seing a flat horizon. There were always hills, trees or buildings on the horizon. I've just realised that this is a generic sunset shot, so just ignore me.

@verticalsmurf thats definitely not britain. no such thing as a flat horizon here!!:)

@verticalsmurf hi :) i love aussies!!! i do love my country and im very proud of it (and yes it is far from perfect yet where isnt ;) ) never been to Australia yet half of Britain seems to be moving there so i should come and see what the fuss is about some day;)
duffgirl13 2 months ago
@duffgirl13 - I know alot of Aussies who are moving to the UK to get away from here. I have never met a Pom who wasn't happy to be here! If you get down here for a visit, seriously, don't skimp on the sunscreen, the sun is different here. We are the skin cancer capital of the world. It's better that you enjoy your trip and go home with a spray tan than spend a week in a burns unit because you spent 3 hours on the beach without sunscreen. And if a bloke smells like booze, don't trust him.
verticalsmurf 2 months ago
@verticalsmurf i wont skimp, promise. and considering im from scotland booze capital of the world i'll definitely not trust them!! ;)

@verticalsmurf I'm pretty sure half of Britain lives at Bondi! ;) I'm a Yank who came down here 2 years ago.
