not okay to punish a whole country for the close-mindedness of some government officials refusing to acknowledge, at the very least, mercury poisoning data.
Also: Although killing cows, pigs, and chickens is more accepted and less harmful to species population and human health, the way in which we (particularly the USA) systematically kills these animals brought up underdeveloped & overweight in tiny cages, pumped full of hormones and special feeds and everything else, is no less sad to me.

Whaling is not something I agree with, but I don't protest it as vehemently as the dolphin issue (i.e. The Cove). It's horrible how it's carried out, as well as the danger it actually poses to humans eating it (super high mercury content, can cause major brain damage). Unfortunately, like he said, most of Japan lives without contact by this whaling culture. Those who do are not all okay with it. There is a pair of town council members in The Cove who protest serving dolphin due to mercury
Odd that we never hear about the Inuit Subsistence Whaling in Greenland...or Native Americans hunting whale in Alaska, protected by US Federal Law. No, much better to create a straw man of Japan. JapanChannel shoots straight...and is the voice of reason...as usual..

I think the fishing is a much bigger problem for the oceans. And Japan plays a major role in this. And yes, sometimes I do, too. Because Maguro sushi is just too tasty. Sorry. (-_-)
I don´t think it´s wrong to eat whales, dolphins or whatever. That´s my humble opinion. It simply depends on your culture area.
We Germans eat a whole lot of animals like pigs or ox or even kangaroos (but they´re only available in special restaurants), because we´re used to it. So relax! That´s how we live and eating is living in some way.
Most of them reactions are way too harsh - that´s hypocrite, think about it!
@FlintFandango It is hypocrite! They don't respect other culture! Its as simple as that! :l Me, I think that instead of changing other culture by force, you should just try to do so. Instead of making the world one whole "culture", we should let them live as they lived. They eat dolphins for over 400 years, and did they extinct? No! I wish people could think with their HEAD instead of their FOOT!!
Eh, I think that if someone wants to eat a dolphin, it is no different then eating a cow or pig, although, if the population of a species is low, it should obviously be kept much more controlled. If eating dolphins or whales is disturbing to someone, I don't see why eating any other animal wouldn't be disturbing.
If mankind could breed or "farm"-raise whales and dolphins as they do cows, goats, pigs, shrimp, and other "normal" foods, they wouldn't be endangered as they are today. But of course we all know how difficult that is given their relative sizes.
Here's MY OPINION. Everybody is different. Each individual have their views and paths they choose. As long it is legal in their country. No one has the right to FORCE their own belief to them. You can however convince them. Hating people because they are less like you is not very convincing method.
I think you have a very mature way of thinking. People can disagree with you, that is one thing, but not hate on your way of explaining how you feel. Peace, love and respect from Sweden.
And as for on this video's topic,it bothers me when I tell people I love Japan and its culture and people and they respond with the whole whaling and dolphin eating thing.Just as you say,I know the average Japanese person does not. It's the same as when I've eaten shark. I ate it because it was given to me, and I know some countries catch shark, take the fin and throw the shark back in the water to die, & I hate it, but I'm not going to judge everyone of a culture for something a small group does.
@Aleenik Actually, that is false as well. Yes, you can obtain certain nutrients from other food sources besides meat, BUT as with protein, it is NOT the same. We do need protein from meat sources (just not a lot of it) and eating non-meat protein sources is NOT the same. I would never consider to be vegetarian. As humans have evolved, our teeth have become more carnivore/omnivore like. We have no need for wisdom teeth anymore as those were from the times humans were purely herbivores.
@Aleenik Also, our digestive system has become shorter, a trait that is seen in non-herbivores, who have longer digestive systems and are better equipped to digest vegetation. Ever wonder why we cannot fully digest corn? At one time, humans were able to, but not anymore with our shorter digestive system. We are built to be omnivores, we need to be sustained by meat and vegetation. You are depriving yourself of nutrients that are only found in meat.
@Aleenik These are the ONLY reasons why I would not consider being a vegetarian.I hate what is done to animals that we eat,but what we can do is support those who treat the meat we eat with care instead. The whole "being vegetarian because of animal cruelty" thing is no longer a valid excuse when there is now the option of organic and cruelty-free. Of course, it is not my choice if you choose to be vegetarian or not.It won't kill you, and I respect your choice, but your second statement is false.
And by the way, I am not a big meat eater, more like on the border line. I am not a vegetarian only because of the difference between the nutrients in meat and the same nutrients in other foods (such as protein). One thing that is definitely true is that many people overeat meat. I've heard that this overeating of meat (especially in the US) is the cause of the cruelty to the animals we eat, since so much of it has to be processed, but I'm not 100% sure if this is fact or not.
I have eaten whale, chicken, cow, pig, fish, turkey.. As a meat eater I didn't care what type if meat it was, meat and animal, is meat and animal, but now I am a vegetarian, because now I think eating all of it is disgusting. It's not like some animals are any worse to eat than others... creatures are creatures. I don't like eating any : /.
The truth about eating dolphin is not good for human anyway, especially the nerve system. The end point is... you may not see the word 鯨 anymore in japan. It is now by the law of japan 2009 you can not get whales or dolphins. Well... if you do see the word 鯨.... in now days japan. Please think twice for your health. P.S i LOVE JAPAN!
Thanks for the interview facts. Actually I don't mind if anyone eating whales or dolphins. And I believe...actually it is not tasty anyway. The word 鯨 in kanji, means whales, but it may also be dolphin, but it won't stated in the supermarket. I hope there are more japanese know this, because the market will never stated.
OH! damn it speak of the devil I put a comment on one of your videos about that you should talk about this topic I guessed iv should have looked before I posted it eh....
I do not agree with eating whale. However I can respect that the Japanese only do it because it is still legal; they are not breaking any IWC rules. I find it encouraging that only a minority eat whale and that it is not very popular with the younger generation and so will probably become outmoded. Hates solves nothing; we must work together to change things for the better.
Japan hasn't reformed, it just elected a prime minister who supports the atrocities of the second world war. And Japan has spit in the faces of the countries that helped them in the tsunami. Japan told dozens of nations to piss off that sent them money including Europe, the US, Australia and New Zealand. When Japan was asked politely to help conserve the endangered whales instead of driving the whales to extinction they simply refused.
Same thing with horse meat. I made a girl back home (texas) cry when I told her I have eaten horse and really liked it. Its healthier than chicken! Why a cow and not a horse? I love dogs as pets but if someone want to eat a dog as long as its not mine Im fine with that. Food is food.
Eating cows, sheep, pig and chicken is okay, IF they are killed humanly and if they are raised to be eaten... Dogs that are raised to be eaten is sick and cruel and I hope you die a horrible death, whaleing is equally sick and inhumane..
@Colour1832 Have you seen how cows, sheep, pis and chicken are killed in life stocks? Its the most disgusting things I have ever seen... This people dont treat them humanly. They are abused constantly, they over feed them and treat them with chemicals to advance their growth.
I've lived in Japan for 8 years and completely agree with you.
Japanese people follow the allowed rules..and almost of all the people i have ever talked to about whale meat or dolphin never had it...if japan has a huge whaling issue i and anyone i've talked to dont even know where to get whale meat....
@PVumbe That is a good thing to point out, but if they are eating whale then they are violating an international law and lying about killing whales for research.
@jaslene816 wut evidence do u have that if whale dies we die. please explain. food has 2 die 2 be eaten. even plants r living things. so u should stop eating veggies. all u vegetarians r hypocrites. i support whaling and my right 2 eat meat. #1 on the food chain. cant wait to try whale & dolphin
No one can classify Japan as a whole as Pro-Whaling. However, you cant say anything is illegal because its a well known FACT that the japaneese are not conducting research. They are hunting for pure reason of selling and trade. Please dont talk about a subject that you clearly know NOTHING about.
@PVumbe Since pork, beef and chicken are specifically raised for their meat, it's a different "can of beans" than the killing wild whales in a designated conservation area, while trying to hide the poaching in protected waters under the banner of what the whalers call "research". It's a harvest of greed, and exists only because the Japanese claim a tradition of whaling. It's a chumps call, and not worth the lies the whalers use.
@Smokemalboro So, I'm guessing television shows like Whale Wars is a great solution for all of us, huh? Our difference in culture and cuisine should be recognized around the world, but stuff like hatred and racism because Japanese people eat whales are what causes more wars and suffering. What would you rather have?- Death of whales? or -Death of people?
@PVumbe Wtf is whale wars...sorry Iam asian, and japanese people eating whales dont cause wars lol, and I dont really care if they eat whales wether their japanese or not as long as they dont eat it until it goes extinc because the pupolation of whales is very low.Bottomline I dont care what your race is and if your race eat whales as long as its in moderation...
@Smokemalboro >Its not the same...whales and dolphins are much closer to extinction ← IN 83 Whale SpecieS, Which Species ARE closer to extinction with Japan and approx TEN NationS' Whaling under Watch by IWC?
@VivaEcoCultBusiness wtf I dont understand you and Its true that we eat dogs in Philippines but we dont eat whales here. Philippine is a country with water sorrounding it and I think that our ancestors ate mostly aquatic animals like whales, but thats in the past , currently if you kill/capture a whale or dolphin here youl be imprisoned for a long long time...
@Smokemalboro >currently if you kill/capture a whale or dolphin here youl be imprisoned for a long long time... ← I don't know In Phil, But In Japan, Posting MUST Be on True Notions, for example Matigas ang uten "Ko" !! :))
Indonesia and Phil are Out of IWC, But Surely Whaling Nations that are for Recognized Species by IWC. Then Phil Fishermen are ONLY Slaughting Whales?
Eating Dogs is No-Problem at all, and Eating Whales that are Not going to Vanish is Not a Problem either.
@PVumbe If all the whales die we will die. Whales are not made for food. Pigs, cows, chickens etc are bred for their meat and are sustained. No one is sustaining the whales only killing.
@PVumbe "What about the slaughter of pigs? cows? chickens?" < are not endangered, and can reproduse rapidly. whales only have one calf a year and theire nombers have dropped drematicly. seeing as we can not farm whales like we do with normal livestock i thinks its best we stick to eating the animals we bread for eating and stop eating the endangered ones
How about fish which is not aquacultured. Do you oppose to fish such fish?
I think we have to consider the whole ecosystem. The balance of the ecosystem is important. Long ago we hunted wolves and deers were once happy but later their number went to much. And whales are huge and eat lots of fish. So if we never catch whales, the balance of the sea collapses. What we should do is to catch fish and whales with balance.
Are you serious? I swear, you people can really be pretty ignorant when you want to be... Eating pigs burgers and steaks from cows and eating chicken is ENTIRELY DIFFERANT from eating dolphins and whales! You want to know why?!?! Becasue those animals are RAISED TO BE EATEN!! Whales and Dolphins are not raised to be eaten, and the more people kill them, the more scarce they will eventually become.
Then we wont have any choice but to eat cows and chickens... get a grip people! Open you freakin eyes!! If we continue to harvest the ocean for our bellies, we will destroy the one thing that keeps our planet going... Im glad none of us will be around to see the distruction, but it would be a fair punishment for those involved
I eat meat. I also try to understand and respect other cultures as best I can. At the end of the day though I think eating a highly intelligent creature such as whales and dolphins just seems wrong as there are many other choices (pigs are different because they have been domesticated). It's the same as eating an Ape in my mind.
If the hunting of whales and dolphins is to continue though, there really needs to be strict international rules in place to make sure over consumption doesn't happen.
@PVumbe Which is exactly why I eat no meat at all-I do not want to be a hypocrite. I will never stand for the slaughter of innocent animals, not whales, not pigs, not cows. No animals should be slaughtered like the whales are. No animals should be killed in the horrible manner that cows, chickens and pigs are. It's sickening.
@PVumbe but there is also the fact that some of these species are very low numbers in the wild. its probably not the same as eating tigers but still. even if you dont see them as cute "fluffy" animals you still have the same small numbers at least in some whale species.
@PVumbe Well why not eat humans! They are made of meat after all! And some would deserve to finish in a plate in my opinion. And the stock is pretty high, we can eat humans for a while without risking to make the specie disappear..
@frepi because it would be illegal... Humans have human rights... Your logic is laughable at best. Don't worry. If it ever becomes legal in your country. I would happily eat you first.
@frepi Not only it is illegal but CANNIBALISM WOULD NEVER BE LEGAL in any country. (My comment to me eating someone is a joke) Why? before you can eat someone. They have to be killed. Killing a person would never be legal in any country because it does not make any sense in the advancement of any society. You can read "Hobbes' State of Nature" if you wish to deeply understand this topic on why societies in their advance stage would never legalized cannibalism.
@frepi Before government and laws, people had absolute freedom. They could do whatever they want within the "laws of nature" (They can't summon magical unicorns but can rape, kill or anything they fancy.) They realized that living in this state is not beneficial to anyone's happiness. (Note: Human's purpose is to survive then find happiness) So they agreed to LIMIT their freedom so IT WOULD BENEFIT A SOCIETY as a whole instead of just one individual. That's why cannibalism is not legal.
@frepi Like what i said in previous reply. You can read more about "Hobbe's State of Nature." It is one of the foundation of Moral and Ethics in modern society. Really interesting stuff especially when you're interested to how morals, ethics, governments and laws were born. After all, if you want to tell people what is moral, you have to fully understand what it means first.
@PVumbe Well, there's issues with mercury levels in dolphin meat causing birth defects, for one. Another issue is that there is good evidence that some kinds of dolphins can recognize their own individual image when shown on a TV screen. To me that just screams high intelligence.
@PVumbe You're right, we do need meat. Doesn't mean we should brutally kill thousands upon thousands of an unsustainable species, especially one who is such a control of the squid population. Slaughter of pigs? You dont corner a bunch of pigs and viciously stab them with harpoons and leave them on the shore half dead, the way they kill pigs is far more humane. So yes it is far different from eating farm animals.
@Spazamatical Well, it is legal in Japan. That's all what you have to understand. These whale and dolphin lovers just don't understand. Right and wrong is subjective and there is a borderline. That's why law is created and enforced.
See eggbeaters comment below, seems I'm not the only person that challenges the childish logic of 'personal/national freedom', and the immorality of eating CETACEAN's, a species that we know are more complex than we can know.
@an1memaster300 it was not one of the creatures put here for our consumption thats why! its like u eating a human, whales and dolphin protect us from sea predators because we have a natural bond with them, whales and dolphins are a concious species that have emotions and communication with humans abilities
@eggbeaters so what about chikens, cows and all of the other animales that we kill and eat every day they werent put on this planet to be eaten too >.>
i've seen some videos where they kill dolphins, no worse than a slaughter house where they kill cattle. the difference is the water turns red and in a slaughter house the blood goes down drains. eskimos always hunted whales, I have some nice figures made from whale bone. I guess dolphins are cute, is that the big deal? we kill rabbits in the states, those are nice and fluffy but dolphins have been known to rape and kill humans.
@gangstanikes you dont understand. whaling is is making whales extinct and they are indangered and soon to be dolphins. here in america we have farms for cattle and chickens so the population is regulated were not killing wild cows or chickens. the japanese dont care how many whales or dolphins they kill or how there efecting the envirement and they dont raise there own whales o r dolphins to kill and eat.
@WoWbobby3 right what we do here in the states is kill wild horses, and we don't even eat them. but there isn't a lot of people making a big deal about that. the way most cattle ranches raise cattle is more like torture, with no room to move around, stepping in their own shit. you should see the turkey farms, most have heart attacks after a few weeks. we tend to raise animals in order to get the most meat possible.that includes giving animals steroids. help fix your local problems first!!!!!!
those kind of boring people not only bore animal to death, they normally also bore real woman to death as well, you can hear in their voice full of logic,reason,why...kind of shit
now cow is gone mad, chicken got a flu, pig have a swine running nose, sheep turned heated with a Q flu, what else can people eat on earth? what's wrong to eat some whale or dolphin? the whole world already knew what messed up our mother earth and cause animal extinct. animal gone extinct is not because we eat them all, it’s because they are either driven mad or bored to death by those boring people.
@fyozotto take it easy, dude!!,, they can speak their own language then some1 make the subtitle in english. by this way, they can independently express their thoughts about the issue rather than just sit their answer whatever they are asked. ya feel me ???
Japanese always almost used everything from the whales. We always say they are the bad guys because they continue to kills whales but those who almost insticted the whales were we the europeans and for what? For few things and the rest we just throwed it back into the sea! Sure it's true if they continue then there will simply have no more whales. But I also understand somehow the japanese when they say: "Fuck you all, you exterminated them almost all and now we are the bad guys?"
it enrages me how people hate on the Koreans for eating dogs. i consider it pure racism and ignorance because dogs are actually more intelligent than pigs. the whaling and the dolphin eating thing also annoys me i think people assume whatever white people do is naturally right (aka fox hunting, bull fighting, drenching oceans to catch fish, battery farming etc) while anything different asians do they naturally reject as barbarous. also note how there is no attention paid to faro islands whaling
Yes.. we have the internet and Japanese TV and Satelitte TV and cable TV (CNN, MSNBC, BBC, Russia TV - in English and many others in a number of languages including English and Japanese)..
I don't hate Japanese people for killing whales and dolphins. I understand that it is part of their culture, however, with the fishing technology we have today I do believe that it is getting to a point where they're killing too many and not allowing them to reproduce fast enough. I think people need to understand that's the main problem, not because the Japanese people feel like killing them because it's part of their culture. We eat cows, and in India cows are considered to be sacred...
you are right but the point that they are trying to make is that its gone way to far these animals really can't be bred in captivity they don't have litters they have one birth at a time and the part of their culture is using these animals to say that it will increase their sex drive that's their excuse for the majority of killing exotic animals.
I was born in Japan and I can tell you i did see whale meat sold occasionally in supermarkets, but from the people I know, they have either never eaten whale or dolphin or just once to try. As a side note: They said it tastes like Ham -_-
2:37 - well, ... if you got a whole whale for your disposal you might have to eat it every day (^_^) ... oh dear ... there is no way any freezer would be big enough to keep the leftovers ... haha ... but seriously: there are other countries where its not that uncommon to eat whale or dolphin ...
I´ve seen whale-meat been sold on a weekly market in Norway ...
And the Føroyar hunt down whales once a year, to have meat for the whole year.
THX 4 the vid! Especially for the comment-bit at the end.
Disregarding very unfortunate sea pollution caused by humans, whale itself is very nutritious. There's nothing wrong in itself with whale meat, it's the amount of nasty stuff whales absorb from the water which tells you it should be completely avoided.
frozen and in the discount section LOL and it was a really busy grocery store in Yokohama subway station so it's not like no one goes by, there were a loooot of people
i was curious so i asked my grandma to buy a small bit (it was on discount anyways, i thought if no one bought it they would dump it out)
so my grandma prepared it
and it tastes really bad... it's like the texture of pork with aftertaste of fish
It sounds like the people interviewed are giving very political answers. That they would be shocked to discover some Japanese eat dolphins I find very hard to believe. They are very aware of how the world views them and that dolphin hunting is frowned upon by the western world.
All animals suffer when they die, we can give them a quick death, but that's all, so it doesn't matter if it's a dog, a whale, a cow, a chicken, a fish... we need their meat for our muscles. For western people, dog, whale and dolphin are cute animals, that doesn't mean nobody should eat them. For people from India, eating a cow is a disgusting thing, it´s their sacred animal. For the middle east countries, eating pig is disgusting. do you see my point?
All countries have their secrets. It makes me sad that a small group of Japanese people would endanger themselves and others by eating toxic meat with high mercury content. I love Japan so much, I wish that the small percentage would look at the facts and realize that they are needlessly killing dolphins to poison themselves. </3 I can believe that most of the population is unaware just like most American's are unaware of how damaging the chemicals in our food really are to our bodies.
there are activist around the world fighting agains japan. .....but i have never seen japonese activisit in pro of whales or dolphins...in their own country...... don't take it wrong...i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee japanese culture...i just don't get it....... don't japanese people..... ( regular people) love animals????????? live can't be that square.
they.. should be the ones doing somthing agains th law that allow whale hunting.
The think is that there are many anti whaling activist in Japan. It is very strange to say that defenders of whaling always say how the majority of Japan loves whaling, but at the same time they can't get mass numbers of people protesting for them.
(continued) - and none of them knew about what was happening in the cove, nor did they agree with or condone the killings anymore than myself. Thus it is ethically and politically incorrect to subjectively 'hate on all Japanese' as it would be stereotypical and ultimately racist to do so. I will though say again that I do not agree with any killing of them (or even other animals in other cultures on mass scales as I am vegetarian) and that this slaughter is bad for ocean ecosystems balance's.
See, I like this video. I watched the Cove and am completely against the killing (on mass slaughter) of any animals, especially whales and dolphins because it's effecting the oceanic ecosystems. BUT whilst also saying this! I would like also to say that I do not blame Japanese people, in fact I defend them against friends of mine who are less subjective about their claims about Japan and Asian countries and their foods. In the Cove they went and asked Japanese people on the streets and ---
@THEgazettoXmiyaviSAN No, you are wrong. You cannot mass produce sentient mammals. Many have tried. Do your homework. Oceanic consumption has been devoured to depletion levels. These are facts. Deep trawling is the catch of the day. The middle feeders are sparse in quantity. ;-)
@THEgazettoXmiyaviSAN No, you are wrong. You cannot mass produce sentient mammals. Many have tried. Do your homework. Oceanic consumption has been devoured to depletion levels. These are facts. Deep trawling is the catch of the day. The middle feeders are sparse in quantity. ;-)
I don't really see how it matters. Whales and dolphins are just any other animal like chicken or cow or pigs, so why is killing an animal any more tragic just because they're cute? And please nobody start with that 'but they might be extinct!' stuff, because that is also happening with MANY other animals in place like here in America; hunting for endangered species and much more.
@THEgazettoXmiyaviSAN It’s not about extinction, it’s about conservation. With the possibility of conservation, there is still time to act. This is a serious issue. Our Seas are emptying. The smile of a ‘cute’ dolphin is a fixed muscle and doesn’t reflect it’s state of well-being + the meat is poisonous. Whales are an integral part of the ocean’s ecosystem. Chicken, Pork and Beef are mass produced for human consumption. Whale and dolphin meat don’t need to be on the menu. There's enough variety.
Please lets concentrate on the fact that this meat is poisionious and the fact the the government isn't telling the people this, or is flat out lying about what kind of meat it is. This is a huge issue! Save Japans Whales and Dolphins and Save Japans People!
i like the way you think but maybeit will be a good idea if they can only kill whales ever second year so the whales can breed and so there is more whales then they wont kill the whale breed. jadene out
Great video! If I may ask a follow-up question (I'm curious, from a strictly culinary viewpoint, only) Is there a certain part or primal cut that is favored above others? The interviewee mentioned her family consumed whale on Jan 1st, is there a traditional dish made on this day?
(please don't hate: In my family we have the entire range of diets from the "kill it grill it" aunt to my sister who refuses all meat, fish, milk, egg, alcohol, antibiotics, leather etc. products)
After watching a couple of these, I've figured out who knows English better than others... XD

not okay to punish a whole country for the close-mindedness of some government officials refusing to acknowledge, at the very least, mercury poisoning data.

There is a pair of town council members in The Cove who protest serving dolphin due to mercury

is it because the dolphin is cuter and happy go lucky?
while the shark is a beast with rows of teeth?
get over it people, they are animals, even if they were to become extinct the earth will adapt
the earth will not wither and die if whales become extinct...like it didnt for all the species that did

@MrUlutraman That's a rather ignorant way of looking at things.
akatsukigirl02 1 month ago in playlist The Japan Interviews
Eh, I think that if someone wants to eat a dolphin, it is no different then eating a cow or pig, although, if the population of a species is low, it should obviously be kept much more controlled. If eating dolphins or whales is disturbing to someone, I don't see why eating any other animal wouldn't be disturbing.
CalebMush 2 months ago in playlist The Japan Interviews
If mankind could breed or "farm"-raise whales and dolphins as they do cows, goats, pigs, shrimp, and other "normal" foods, they wouldn't be endangered as they are today. But of course we all know how difficult that is given their relative sizes.
smtaki 2 months ago in playlist The Japan Interviews
Here's MY OPINION. Everybody is different. Each individual have their views and paths they choose. As long it is legal in their country. No one has the right to FORCE their own belief to them. You can however convince them. Hating people because they are less like you is not very convincing method.

Eating anything is fine.
Humans are carnivores, as long as you plan to eat what you kill, it's all good.

Sandy33569 2 months ago
I'm a vegetarian. I am horrified by what happens to whales and dolphins just as I am horrified by what happens to other animals we eat.
@PVumbe you said 'We need meat in our bellies."
That is 100% false. We need things that are in meat, but we can obtain those things from other food sources.
Aleenik 2 months ago
@Aleenik Actually, that is false as well. Yes, you can obtain certain nutrients from other food sources besides meat, BUT as with protein, it is NOT the same. We do need protein from meat sources (just not a lot of it) and eating non-meat protein sources is NOT the same. I would never consider to be vegetarian. As humans have evolved, our teeth have become more carnivore/omnivore like. We have no need for wisdom teeth anymore as those were from the times humans were purely herbivores.
Sandy33569 2 months ago
@Aleenik Also, our digestive system has become shorter, a trait that is seen in non-herbivores, who have longer digestive systems and are better equipped to digest vegetation. Ever wonder why we cannot fully digest corn? At one time, humans were able to, but not anymore with our shorter digestive system. We are built to be omnivores, we need to be sustained by meat and vegetation. You are depriving yourself of nutrients that are only found in meat.
Sandy33569 2 months ago
@Aleenik These are the ONLY reasons why I would not consider being a vegetarian.I hate what is done to animals that we eat,but what we can do is support those who treat the meat we eat with care instead. The whole "being vegetarian because of animal cruelty" thing is no longer a valid excuse when there is now the option of organic and cruelty-free. Of course, it is not my choice if you choose to be vegetarian or not.It won't kill you, and I respect your choice, but your second statement is false.
Sandy33569 2 months ago
And by the way, I am not a big meat eater, more like on the border line. I am not a vegetarian only because of the difference between the nutrients in meat and the same nutrients in other foods (such as protein). One thing that is definitely true is that many people overeat meat. I've heard that this overeating of meat (especially in the US) is the cause of the cruelty to the animals we eat, since so much of it has to be processed, but I'm not 100% sure if this is fact or not.
Sandy33569 2 months ago
I have eaten whale, chicken, cow, pig, fish, turkey.. As a meat eater I didn't care what type if meat it was, meat and animal, is meat and animal, but now I am a vegetarian, because now I think eating all of it is disgusting. It's not like some animals are any worse to eat than others... creatures are creatures. I don't like eating any : /.

It's a harvest of greed, and exists only because the Japanese claim a tradition of whaling. It's a chumps call, and not worth the lies the whalers use.

TheSiqLad 5 months ago
@PVumbe Which is exactly why I eat no meat at all-I do not want to be a hypocrite. I will never stand for the slaughter of innocent animals, not whales, not pigs, not cows.
Polypoly06 2 months ago
@Polypoly06
Cannibalism has been accepted in some civilizations. But why is eating humans illegal?
frepi 2 months ago

Polypoly06 2 months ago
@PVumbe Well, there's issues with mercury levels in dolphin meat causing birth defects, for one. Another issue is that there is good evidence that some kinds of dolphins can recognize their own individual image when shown on a TV screen. To me that just screams high intelligence.
SuperDrRockzo 2 months ago in playlist The Japan Interviews
@PVumbe You're right, we do need meat. Doesn't mean we should brutally kill thousands upon thousands of an unsustainable species, especially one who is such a control of the squid population. Slaughter of pigs? You dont corner a bunch of pigs and viciously stab them with harpoons and leave them on the shore half dead, the way they kill pigs is far more humane. So yes it is far different from eating farm animals.
Spazamatical 2 months ago
@Spazamatical Well, it is legal in Japan. That's all what you have to understand. These whale and dolphin lovers just don't understand. Right and wrong is subjective and there is a borderline. That's why law is created and enforced.

I love Japan so much, I wish that the small percentage would look at the facts and realize that they are needlessly killing dolphins to poison themselves. </3 I can believe that most of the population is unaware just like most American's are unaware of how damaging the chemicals in our food really are to our bodies.

Very objective.
Watch videos like ¨Food Inc.¨and see what WE eat and how we treat animals.
Good video.

The killing of any animal isnt bad, but you must give back to the earth

some animals seems too cute to be aggressed or killed lol.
dogs, cats, dolphins, whales, squirrels, elephants, kangaroos, monkeys... etc.
but in every country eating unusual meats can be found. its an opinion of culture.
in reality, it does not effect anything but our sensitivity.

there are activist around the world fighting agains japan. .....but i have never seen japonese activisit in pro of whales or dolphins...in their own country...... don't take it wrong...i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee japanese culture...i just don't get it....... don't japanese people.....

The middle feeders are sparse in quantity. ;-)

WHY EAT DOLPHIN AND WHALE????
brandonashplant 10 months ago
I don't really see how it matters. Whales and dolphins are just any other animal like chicken or cow or pigs, so why is killing an animal any more tragic just because they're cute? And please nobody start with that 'but they might be extinct!' stuff, because that is also happening with MANY other animals in place like here in America; hunting for endangered species and much more.
THEgazettoXmiyaviSAN 10 months ago
@THEgazettoXmiyaviSAN It’s not about extinction, it’s about conservation. With the possibility of conservation, there is still time to act. This is a serious issue. Our Seas are emptying. The smile of a ‘cute’ dolphin is a fixed muscle and doesn’t reflect it’s state of well-being + the meat is poisonous. Whales are an integral part of the ocean’s ecosystem. Chicken, Pork and Beef are mass produced for human consumption. Whale and dolphin meat don’t need to be on the menu. There's enough variety.

why is everyone always bitching about the japanese eating Whales
we in norway also kill and eat whales so why are you not giving us shit too
oystein127 10 months ago
@oystein127 well, we do! It's just that we are so subtle, you don't even know about it! ;-)
46maximus 10 months ago
Please lets concentrate on the fact that this meat is poisionious and the fact the the government isn't telling the people this, or is flat out lying about what kind of meat it is. This is a huge issue! Save Japans Whales and Dolphins and Save Japans People!
LasBrisas1979 10 months ago
i like the way you think but maybeit will be a good idea if they can only kill whales ever second year so the whales can breed and so there is more whales then they wont kill the whale breed. jadene out

Great video! If I may ask a follow-up question (I'm curious, from a strictly culinary viewpoint, only) Is there a certain part or primal cut that is favored above others? The interviewee mentioned her family consumed whale on Jan 1st, is there a traditional dish made on this day?
(please don't hate: In my family we have the entire range of diets from the "kill it grill it" aunt to my sister who refuses all meat, fish, milk, egg, alcohol, antibiotics, leather etc. products)
