no it has nothing to do with distinctive genetic traits related to ethnicity, but a lot to do with culture. It's almost all related to her culture I'd say. So yes there is a link to be done between her ethnicity and her talent, but not when you talk about genetic traits. That is merely a joke in my opinion. Some people may interpret it wrongly though, and that's bad.
This is super cool, I just wish the recording was crisper so I could hear all the instruments better. The solo Bassoons and stuff kinda get lost in the sound quality, but the sextuplet-septuplet trills they are playing are super cool!
@hantpak I totally agree! One of the great concerti of the 20th (or ANY) century! As long as the planet rotates on its axis, there will be performances of Bach and Stravinsky. Geniuses from maybe another planet themselves!
@hantpak absolutely! It really is a great piece and so different from all the other violin concerti in the repertoire. Just as accessible as Vivaldi too.
this isn't that great of a recording but it isn't bad.
Shin hyon-su is probably where she is because she dedicated the precious little hours one has out of school to studying the violin. It has nothing to do with her last name or nationality. I'm not trying to take the liberal high card or anything, i'm just telling it like it is.

Except for where she rushes a bit at 4:05, and at the very end, I thought they were pretty well together, nothing drastic. My only complaint is a subtle intonation issue throughout, but it's so slight as to make me wonder if it's really there.
this is a competition guys, the soloist hasnt ever reeally practiced with those dudes before, cut them some slack. they did great considering they barely knew each other at all
Isn't amazing how when played by Russian musicians Stravinsky's music suddenly becomes moving? The soloist is phenomenal: abandoned, daring, caught up in the heat of the moment yet always accurate and sometimes inspired. Great - and thank you for posting.
i think she's brave for opting for this rather than all the over-played concertos, such as the mendelsohn and the sibelius and the beethoven and the brahms
She really doesn't understand Stravinsky. It has a kind of pseudo-musicality to it, but it's very shallow. She plays it all the same. No humor, semi-aggressive, Little variation in tone or vibrato. No expression. BAD control of line. I also think she doesn't look very good up there. Blank face and something about posture. I would never go to see her perform. And I loved studying and performing this piece myself, so it's not the piece.
She can play....but this is the final round of tchaik comp. I would assume that they would be better than this. Not to mention the fact that its a rarity when the orchestra plays in the same tempo.
She said "This music was the first time to play for the orchestra, so, it was so hard to play w/ them. even I wanted to give up....... I couldn't do anything in rehearsal and on the stage. " She stewed about her rendering. Don't blame her. She couldn't anything as she wanted to do. I think she was the no.1 in the competition.
Yes, the orchestra is never together with her. I think she should have chosen another concerto. Unless you have a good orchestra, this is impossible to put together well. The piece relies so much on the ensemble and interaction with the orchestra, so if they are bad there is little you can do. A mistake to play this piece with an orchestra you have no idea about before. She should have programmed more standard concerto such as Paganini or Sibelius. She is a very good violinist though.
true and it's quite annoying. I think the orchestra is clearly to blame here, it's sluggish I wonder how much they rehearsed the piece; but she could also have slowed down a little bit. that would have helped. But besides from that her performance is very very impressive!!
Anne-Sophie Mutter and Kyung Wha Chung also take it at this same tempo. In my opinion, if you play this too fast, it does not show the relationships between orchestra and soloist.
Italian + Russian + French + a little creep = Stravinsky

people, really. these comments about asian musicians somehow being genetically better at violin are so not cool.
ones ethnicity has nothing to do with playing ability. Being asian doesn't make you a good musician. Practice does.
