doing something in 5 hours doesn't mean you deserve praise... The video filter looks terrible, makes any detail completely useless. The story is weak as well as well as the sound. From 3:30 on, I have absolutely no idea what is happening because you can't see anything.
This is a home movie with some direction... not a "film"
The owner of the house did a very very nice job for something like this. The only real problem I saw given your budget and time restraints is the dialogue in the beginning is a bit cheesy and the actor who was looking for a place to stay seemed like he was trying to hard to use a serious voice.
Dont listenn to the haters man! I liked this video! You definitely made the most of the equipment you had which is more than I can say for a lot of filmmakers. I LOVED the color scheming because I could tell you were shooting for a comic-book style surreal sort of look. Im not saying it was perfect but you guys definitely have the spark! Keep shooting!
@Jode86 you loved the color scheming? what scheming? the video filter used? the one which made detail impossible and the last 30-45 seconds completely impossible to understand visually?
If your going to give them confidence, then give them advice as to how to fix it, don't encourage poor technique and style. There is no comic book style here, there is no surreal aspect to it... don't give credit where credit isn't due. Keep shooting, but learn from mistakes and never stop learning.
@MST3Killa These filmmakers shot with very cheap equipment and in a single location and still managed to tell a story I found entertaining, hence the reason the film is a success in my eyes. The video filter drew attention away from not only the low video quality of the camera but the limited scope of the location. I don't understand where you're seeing poor technique and style either. The camera work, lighting and sound design were actually pretty decent
@jode94 don't know where there is poor technique? well, the line rule is broken in nearly every scene. Edits are poor. Having the filter ruins any chance of this. The limited scope of the location is always there since the story doesn't move around... but you think it's entertaining so the filter has no impact... all it does is make half the shots impossible to make out. That is POOR film making. Lighting? where? Sound DESIGN? there was a design to it or a built in mic you mean...
@jode94 There were no establishing shots, no way to know where they are in relation to the location. The editing often has them repeating lines and is off action, The lighting makes it impossible to see whats happening, sound picks up camera person breathing, its bad lighting since when a light comes into frame, that area is blown out while the rest isn't visible. And do you know what sound design is? thats a job to gather sounds and create "new" ones... there was none of that here. None.
@MST3Killa I'm not touting it as being perfect work MST3Killa. At the beginning, the wind seemed to be a manufactured sound, though maybe it wasn't. There's use of lighting at 1:40 and I liked their use of the lights at 3:04. The natural lighting at 2:14 is rather good. There seems to be lights at 2:50 with the blue. And I liked the filter. I don't care how easy it was to do, it added kind of a unique feel in my opinion and I enjoyed it.
@jode94 It sounds fake..don't know, but they didn't manufacture it. The lighting is wrong at 1:40 it was coming from the window, then coming from a lamp in the room.
You liked the turning on and off of the light? impressive... the natural lighting at 2:14? what natural lighting? they're in a basement with a bulb overhead, there is no natural light there. And the blue... I can see why you might like the blue, but everything else...no good.
@jode94 and when you say "not touting it as being perfect" but then have said all the as you put it, "great things" they did.... that's reinforcing a poor job. Tel them what's wrong they can fix it.if you say it's great, then why would the try to change it? It's not perfect.it's hardly mediocre. And i'm not sure you know what your talkin about enough to judge Good film making from bad. Sure you may enjoy a film, but do you understand why?
@MST3Killa They obviously couldnt afford a professional lighting system, but the high contrast lighting was fitting to the mood, whether it was intentional or not. As was the high contrast lighting in the basement (most likely not intentional). the light turning on and off was simple and effective. It doesn't have to be difficult to have a decent effect. It was, in my opinion, a cleaver use of what they had available to them
@jode94 A high contrast form would have been right, had there not been a filter on that totally crushes the contrast.
And no, something doesn't have to be difficult to be effective... but the light turning off and on makes the camera loose all balance and so when the light comes back on, it looks severely out of focus every time. it's hard on the eyes in a non entertaining kind of way. Clever? if you want to call it that. Causing more problem than good.... yes.
@MST3Killa The contrast was still there, though lessened slightly by the filter.
Normally I'd agree with you about the balance and focus with the light going on and off, but can you honestly tell me you saw that happening in that scene? Whatever effect the light had on the camera seemed to be masked by the filter for the most part.
@jode94 Yes I can see it... but yes it is masked by the filter... which is problematic. That filter throws everything out of focus. Again, making it hard to distinguish any detail, and really blows the contrast out. In the basement especially, I mean, the last 30 seconds I cannot tell what's happening at all. my guess is this cam was on auto focus, and with the light changing the camera couldn't adapt. The filter to me amplifies the problem, instead of getting rid of it.
@MST3Killa Now you're just splitting hairs. And the filter isn't throwing anything out of focus. Its washing the colors. Most consumer cameras have auto-focus on as a factory setting (Night mode as well, boosting the gain of darker shots), and must be switched to manual for more control. Any issues created by these automatic settings would be, if anything, lessened by the filter, which appears to be taking similar colors and blending them into one consistent color.
@MST3Killa The bottom line is that a year ago I watched this video and was entertained by it. I thought I'd let the creators know that I enjoyed the story they told, and not to listen to the people hating on it. I'm rather flattered that you took the time out of your day to try to educate me as to what I should and shouldn't enjoy on youtube but I've survived thus far...I think I'll be okay!
Thanks for sticking up for the video. I made this when I was very young with my cousins, I don't think MST3Killa understands it was just made for fun and for possible entertainment of others. I love filmmaking and did try to incorporate some things into the edit, but obviously it's far from perfect and I learned a lot from it.
@gnarly6154 Haha oh I can tell you guys had a blast, it was def fun to watch! I've actually worked on a couple rather large motion pictures (grunt positions of course haha) but the trend in that environment is pretty consistent - people with attitudes like yours are the ones that find success. Positive, motivated, willing to learn...Keep it up man!
Sorry...but I found the whole color scheme gimmick very distracting. I strongly recommending not doing this to any of your future films. Judges will think of you as "what does this button do?" filmmakers. Somehow you made the top 10 list though, hell if i know how. Keep making movies though. Every film is a learning process. You can get to where you need to be, just keep working a t it.
Their were some bad cuts, and some bad lines. The script could have been better along with the quality of the audio. Nonetheless it kept interesting throughout. Excellent Work.
Thanks man appreciate your comment. We were going for the rotoscope idea, but only had windows movie maker, so i combined several effects including grain, mosaic and several others.
That was pretty good; I enjoyed it. Like someone else said, the editing could use a little work (I LOVE the stylization, but there are some continuity concerns).
wow that actually wasnt that bad. u guys definitely have talent!! seriously boys great dialogue and acting. It couldve been edited a little tighter but obviously it wasnt your intention to make something PERFECT so i wont bother with all the minor mistakes. You all did a great job and im sure your future works will be vastly improve. cant wait!
not bad at all.....what program did you use to edit the film? the cuts couldve been a bit cleaner....also try shooting on a tripod so you get some nice still shots, even though the shaky camera wasnt all that bad for this type of short film....check out some of my short films : )
Hey dude, gr8 movies. The effect you've used over the top is really gr8. Chek out my page if u like ur horrors and thrillers. Mre r coming soon. 1nce iv gt a chance to upload them all.
i also am a fan of a scanner darkly. great film. but no, they use macrmedia and draw over each frame individually. i sed sony veags and added in some grainy film and art mosaic effects.
i like the video effect u added but i think it would have been better if u swiched from normal camera veiw to grain looking effect.also i think black n white would have looked cool in some parts too.
are you sure? it seems more like a combination of threshold/watercolor/smudgestick to me.... anyway great job, you had excellent sound quality, well done.
thanks very much, yeh during the basement scene there was threshold when the lights were flickering. And mosaic was used with grain for other scenes. thanks again
Omg it is real cool
But I freak out when I am in bed and it is dark
I like to watch creepy things, but when it involves a dark closet with 'something' in it
That freaks me out
Lol

i enjoyed this, but i would have enjoyed it more if i could see clearly what was going on
i'm still confused as to what/who Jim-bo was haha
but this did intrigue me
and i thought it was somewhat more comedic as well, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good, cause it was
