@MrSteevieboy The answer is quite simple. He is 'different'. He's been given a God given talent which even he can't explain..it just 'is'. Same could be said about Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and other musical prodigies.
I'm sure Paul plays things differently now. He's not trying to duplicate some tape he made 40-50 years ago in a studio. As the rhythm guitarist said, they try to hit all the riffs everyone expects to hear, but even the Beatles wouldn't play the same song the same way twice, live. They'd be bored to tears.
Amazing. McCartney doesn't play the bass lines as in the original. Compare this with original footage of his bass work at the lines "I found out, and I found out".
It seems to me that McCartney plays the bassline a little different here compared to the original recording from the 60s? Something he has done on other songs too. It sounds like he's playing an octave lower on some parts (eg. 00.48 - 1:00 lyrics: "She was a day tripper"). Anyone who can shed some light on this?
@IamMagPie My guess is that the studio version was done with the Rickenbacker bass, which has better intonation in the upper register. Since he is using the Hofner--which in his words always had intonation issues in the upper registers--he tends to play lower.
@masouruki: yeah, looks hard, but after less then one day, its very easy.
i play bass too, and its only difficult to keep it all the time, cause after repeating this bassline all over the song, you easily make mistakes, and the hand HURTS! :D
@LordLTSmash Play E open then on the same string play GG# - B on the A string - E on the D string - D open - B on the A string - F# on the D string - B on the A string - D open - E on the D string. Once you have established this pattern just move it across and start with the A string and play the same pattern only one string up those are all the intro notes. Middle part play ithe same riff starting with the B note on the 7th fret of the E string. Rest is mainly single root notes g-luck
@LordLTSmash The intro is really a variation of a boogie bass like say the intro to Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison what you should learn is how to play a basic 12 bar blues and then this would all make sense to you. It's gotta be a whole lotta shakin' going on and is what the the Beatles influences' were.
@2011littlejohn1 actually I already knew how to play this song. What I meant is that I thought I was a bad player but noticed that not quite so since a lot of people seem to have trouble playing this song, which is pretty easy BTW. But thanks anyways.
@ masouruki Yes, you're right! I'm a bass-player, and I've tried it. Impossible! Plus, he plays it the hardest way - there's an easier way, an octave lower - but no. And he's spot-on, note-perfect, and singing at the same time. Whatever else you think about Paul, he is a damn good bass-player.
@justathanasia I would say we don't know many times they might have overdubbed their own harmonies to create a thicker sound, especially in the later years when they stopped touring.
There is only one other legend that can match Macca , that has seen and done what he has done , that through the years has played to millions of people at sold out concerts all over the world , that also like Sir Paul changed the face of music and will forever be remembered and respected . That other legend is Paul McCartney's Hofner bass guitar .
@Albert18264 Talk about a legend. It sounded like crap ever since he bought it. Dark, muddy, it only works on keeping rythm (Get Back)...I wish he'd use his Rickenbacker again.
This one CANNOT NEVER get out of the set list. It's one of the powerful raw tunes Macca takes out in concerts (the other ones being I've Got A Feeling, Paperback Writer & Helter Skelter).
I saw this one in Mexico City last year and it's abolutely awesome.
@caulinrocker1 but you have to admit that it takes away that nice, original, clean Beatles sound. by clean i mean no distortion cus john lennon played his guitar like he was swatting flies. lol
@CarlosS0808 distortion is less subject to picking attack and other factors ... if you pick the strings hard on dist. the volume rises a little but on clean it could have a really high spike ... same for your fretboard hand ... also dist. picks up the lighter touches well because its consistancy ... in a place like that if its not all equalized perfectly the guitars could be drown out or drown everything else because of the way the sound wave echo there ... thats mostly why its distortion
Damn hard song to play on bass and sing, bleedin hard I tell ya! I mean even Macca has to keep an eye on his hand on that fret, I tried it, hard! so good job Macca, ya can still do it!
@JRGrange25 Practice it and it's actually not very hard to do, I managed to master singing and playing the bass for this song. Good trick to learn memory finger placement is to play in front of a mirror and just look at everything you play that way after a while you don't even need to use the mirror anymore. This song kicks so much ass and Macca is king of bass.
Every time you hear the Beatles, or a Beatle it never stops the awe factor, the amazing, the songs, the feeling, the happiness, the memories. The Beatles are forever.

@miguelportnoy85 Brilliant comment, squire. Paul is the most melodic bassist living, and maybe the greatest songwriter of the past three generations. No? You prefer Dylan? Dylan said, "McCartney is the only songwriter I am in awe of." 'Clown," ? C'mon, man! He has been knighted, for Chrissakes! People like Elvis Costello and Dylan are in awe of him! He is one of the greatest musical minds ever! President Obama just awarded him the Gershwin Medal for Pop Songwriting! You're wrong!
@miguelportnoy85 According to Jack Bruce (bass player, are you familiar with him?) to Times Online on June 1, 2008: "Ask him who he regards as the best bass players in pop and rock history (see box) and he answers at once: 'If you’re talking electric bass, it’s very, very simple: James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, Jaco Pastorius, me.'" @miguelportnoy85 I just hope you know how many people, A. Hate you, B. Disagree with you, C. Wish you would run into a knife. Your a fucking clown kid. Seriously this is one of the greatest songwriters to live in the past 100 years. Mozart and Beethoven turned sideways in their graves to hear this man sing and play. You sir are a JOKE
Paul inspired me to start playing bass because if a 19 year old from Liverpool learn to play the bass and become the biggest rocker in the world why can't I start a band and be the bass player?
@plotchickens He is very good and perfectly qualified for the job. In fact, I cant think of anyone else who could do a better job! He has played drums and been in a musical family all his life. He went to several music colleges including Berklee, and has played in many bands like Sting and Steve Vai. You saying he sucks, is just showing how ignorant you really are. :p
@plotchickens Yeah, collectively they are all one fantastic drummer, like the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers!!!! except Paul's band doesn't blow up miniature buildings and bad guys called Shredder, or something like that. I just watched your band's music and damn, you guys are good! You should go on tour with like Refused or ABBA or one of those Nordic metal bands or anybody else from Sweden. Is it dark all the time for you right now? I live in Florida. What does your band name mean?
I am a massive Sir Paul fan..Next to Elvis my main idol Sir Paul's idol too !! This man has been through so much the last few years and he continues to please the crowds ..a very private man who I deeply respect ..I live near his estate ..I have seen Sir Paul on a bike in Brighton ..no airs and graces about this man at all ..A true Northerner like me ..polite , respectful of others even when he was going through that divorce he kept his dignity ..Respect for Sir Paul Always
You can really see how much Paul enjoyed touring as compared to his other fellow beatles even when they were still touring together....and even now at his age he's stilol enjoying the life of touring and doing concerts all over the world. :)
@gochisox4696 Every like million years? Greatest musician to ever live? One in a trillion people? I do not consider myself to being include in that trillion onw.
@gochisox4696 Well - he is definately 500 million times better than half of the bands around these days who are busy destroying the reputation of the older, talented artists. They can try all they like but they will NEVER make people forget Macca!
@gochisox4696 your´re absolutely right! It´s hard to evaluate Paul Mccartney correctly, but I think you did it in a great way. He´s an amazing talented genius, and why not, the god of music?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@34LOLWTF If only Mark Chapman would've gunned this prick down instead of John Lennon We would'nt have to put up with this wobbley headed winkin bastards nonsense. Mark Chapman shot the wrong Beatle!
Paul is so class compared to those old farts Stones. Jagger looks like a transvestite, Richards can barely stand on his feet, Watts is 2 seconds to death on every show, and their performaces are far, far from professional.
iNTERESTING TO NOTE.....he is not playing the Tripper bass line exactly per the record. While the 'riff' part is exact (verse), he has changed the chorus to playing 8th notes on the triad, rather than hanging them like on the record. He seems to have done subtle changes like that in other songs too. The Hofners still resonate a great bass sound, even on stage...such a great bass guitar to play!
yeah, I noticed that too. He's done that to many of the songs...Paperback comes to mind when he did it in '93..made it more simple for him to play/sing at the same time.
How the hell does Sir Paul play that riff on the bass AND sing!!!!at the same time?? mindblowing!!!

drummer sucks. just a fat nobody
plotchickens 1 year ago
@plotchickens He is very good and perfectly qualified for the job. In fact, I cant think of anyone else who could do a better job! He has played drums and been in a musical family all his life. He went to several music colleges including Berklee, and has played in many bands like Sting and Steve Vai. You saying he sucks, is just showing how ignorant you really are. :p
coltong400 1 year ago
mmm... no, no he really is just a fat fucking islander moron who can't play.
plotchickens 1 year ago
@plotchickens wow, you really are an idiot, aren't you? Abe Laboriel Jr is an absolutely fantastic drummer, in fact, Paul's whole touring band is.
TheNatedogg56 1 year ago
@TheNatedogg56 his whole touring band is an absolutely fantastic drummer?
hmmm, whatever you say.
plotchickens 1 year ago

Paul is one in a trillion people. People like this only come once every like million years. I think he is the greatest musician to ever live.

@gochisox4696 Every like million years? Greatest musician to ever live? One in a trillion people? I do not consider myself to being include in that trillion onw.
WiltatKansas 1 year ago
@gochisox4696 Well - he is definately 500 million times better than half of the bands around these days who are busy destroying the reputation of the older, talented artists. They can try all they like but they will NEVER make people forget Macca!
davyjones800 1 year ago
@gochisox4696 your´re absolutely right! It´s hard to evaluate Paul Mccartney correctly, but I think you did it in a great way. He´s an amazing talented genius, and why not, the god of music?

Paul is so class compared to those old farts Stones. Jagger looks like a transvestite, Richards can barely stand on his feet, Watts is 2 seconds to death on every show, and their performaces are far, far from professional.
buzonperiodista 1 year ago 4
@buzonperiodista man Knock Jagger all you want but Keith fucking rocks and i love Macca hope he plays down under in 2011.
hambone9119 1 year ago
iNTERESTING TO NOTE.....he is not playing the Tripper bass line exactly per the record. While the 'riff' part is exact (verse), he has changed the chorus to playing 8th notes on the triad, rather than hanging them like on the record. He seems to have done subtle changes like that in other songs too. The Hofners still resonate a great bass sound, even on stage...such a great bass guitar to play!
untypicalmale4u 1 year ago
@untypicalmale4u
yeah, I noticed that too. He's done that to many of the songs...Paperback comes to mind when he did it in '93..made it more simple for him to play/sing at the same time.
