The mother ship is described as being 1/4th the size of our moon. With a ship that super massive, it would have it's own gravity. They didn't need to invade earth. In reality, all they had to do was hover near the earth's atmosphere. The mother ship's gravity would have cause natural disasters on earth such as earthquakes and mega tsunamis.
