I was watching that closely and it looked fine to me. NFL should be more lenient on plays like this. The ball was catchable, the defender hit him to jar it loose, there was no head hitting. Should he just watch him dive catch it? What else can the defender do?

They should concentrate on plays like Suh torquing qb necks. (see Suh on Delhomme). Those plays need to be addressed.

I always thought hitting a defenseless receiver was only a vaild call if it was already clear he wasn't going to catch the football. If a hard hit is needed to jar the football lose, try telling Ed Reed, Brian Dawkins and John Lynch back in his day not to do so. There was hardly a thing the defender could do to avoid that. He was expecting to hit him in the shoulder, and then Chad slid down. Mason had maybe, at most, a tenth or two of a second to react. Goodell, go eat a sandwich, leave the NFL.

new rule isn't talking about helmet to helmet. That was put into play last year. The rule changes for this year include db's who are going for the ball and accidentally hit a receiver... not even helmet to helmet but anywhere above the shoulders. it's rediculous.
