This laptop was bought to meet a time-sensitive need in the workplace. I would follow your advice about getting a normal laptop but I'm only 14 so I don't have too much money and the desktop I'm using right now is really old and is actually worse than the mini.
Omg this is the best mini netbook yet! I previously had an hp mini 1000 but it cra.shed (it was a lemon and hp would NOT give me a refund) Now i have this dell mini 9 and it is about a million x better
I have had this mini 9 for almost a half a year now, it is an amazing machine, its fast, small, quiet, i actually use it mostly for messenger, but soon im going to put some game emulators on it, but it is an amazing machine for its size. solid state really makes a difference, it rather sad that this thing is faster than my pc, also, im running windows 7 on it, (my dad has been beta testing it) and so far, my mini has not frozen once. Great machine!
nah, i have a 32 gig solid state, and i have over half my space remaining, not quite sure how much, and im too lazy to go get my laptop right now, but it's not 16 gig no, that was the old beta versions, i have the final RTM version, and it's fine.
This mini 9 is a jem now....its actually a step up from their crappy new mini 10 because mini 9 allows 2 gig ram upgrade while mini 10 doesnt. you can increase space by hadding a SDHC. This is a great little mahcine for office, web, photoshop, movies, and even DJ softwares if u upgrade to its full potential.
the sims 1 i dnt kno about the sims 2 tho but there is a app called gma that unlocks the dell mini graphics card has they underclock it to save battery
It needs one eSATA port to make it worth while. I assume the SSD is SATA so I guess if I bought one of these I'd remove the SSD and mod in an eSATA port.
FYI, When checking bootup tests with all Atom machines. When on Battery power the Processor will cut down the speed. When On AC power it will run full speed at 1.6mhz. Alot of videos on tube that check bootup times with battery power on one machine vs AC power on another machine. AC power is Full Processor.. Just a note for the Shoppers out there. Any questions on netbooks email me.
I checked out the Mini 9 at my local Best Buy, the freakin keyboard is too small. I guess I'm just spoiled with my ThinkPad's keyboard. Ye folks should check out the new Dell Mini 10, the touch pad is like the new MacBooks, it's clickable!!
The HDD vs SSD debate is silly. HDD have been around far longer than SSD. The price for SSD is still very high and the "advantages" of SSD are not worth the extra price. SSD don't really offer better battery life, they are not that much more reliable than HDD, and not cost effective.
SSD is much more durable, if you drop it HDD can easily get scratched and ruined if they are reading/writing (iPod mini). The battery life is actually better, you don't have the motor to spin which takes a lot of power. Writing to SSD is the power hog, reading takes very little power. SSD is also silent and fast.
For the amount of space you get for the price is terrible compared to HDD. That is the only advantage I can think of for HDD.
i like this one, but i perfer the Hp Mini Netbook 1000. this one has only an 8.2 or 8.7 inch screen. the HP has a choice of either. and the HP is a widescreen. but i like both. they both have XP which i really like. and im getting the HP MINI for x-mas. can't wait!
There's nothing really "wrong" with it, but there's so much more you can get from almost anywhere else. Aside from that However there is on huge flaw. The keyboard, which is the worst fucking keyboard of all time. I really am sorry for anyone who plans on getting one since they have to put up with this keyboard when they could've gotten almost any other netbook and been much better off.
So I just got my mini9. It has bluetooth and I would like to use my 50 inch lcd tv in my livingroom as a monitor as I sit on my couch surfing the web. Can I do this wirelessly without a patchcord??? If so, what do I need to do???
At least he is very informative- he gets to the point, explains the laptop inside out with a lot of detail..this helps a lot for people who want to get this laptop since there is no real retailer for dell computers...
the small HD is the dealbreaker for me. i wouldve liked to see a 64gb SSD in there, 32gb at least, i would be there in a heartbeat. i think ill be going for the lenovo s10, but there are so many net books outthere
im going to buy it but bwone i cant u buy a battery that last longer because mini 9 last for 4 hours and its a good think its a xp because vista sucks and lot videos saying it sucks
I'm still undecided whether to get this Mini 9 or the Aspire One .. Aspire One's huge HD is not Solid State so it sort of counters the idea of being portable (lightweight, efficient, and reliable) the 6cell battery sounds really nice though I think the Mini 9 is just as upgradeable .. I do agree that the Mini 9's keyboard layout is a bit of a turnoff though. It would feel just like re-learning how to type again on this netbook ....
I need a computer that can go on the Internet and run iTunes at the same time. Is this computer good for those two reasons? I really don't need a extravagant computer that has the newest features. I need one for little stuff like that. I don't use programs that use alot of space that much anyway.
yeah probably, but bear in mind that the HD is SSD, so they come in 8GB, 16GB, 32GB etc. Make sure that that is enough for your music. I just ordered one of these, but i have a Core Duo 14.1" Inspiron with 1GB RAM, and it runs Itunes fine. With Itunes, RAM is really your main concern, not necessarily processing speed. these machines normally come with 1GB RAM. If you buy it, you can always swap in a 2GB RAM chip easily for about US$25-30.
I'm assuming through some BIOS update but I haven't seen it done myself. I have heard its been able to be done but I'm not sure on the process. Wish I could help more.
