I was in right field about 10 feet away, but was too young 12 to fight for it. The guy who got the ball jumped into the old yankee bull pen and ran away with it, probably because he stole it. I saw a black man catch the ball first.
It's incredible how a humble baseball player like Roger Maris could be hated by many people at the time because of Babe Ruth being the previous HR king. I know extra games were added to the season but the same was done for Ruth. I echo many people's sentiments when I say that Maris is still the HR king.
The real single season HR champ. Glad to know the true record stays in the Yankee family. The Babe set the standard and Maris earned the right to take the torch. And that torch still burns bright to all who respect the game, its integrity, and our heroes who played it without the need to cheat and deceive us.
@skywalker71903 McGwire earned it and so did Hank Aaron but Bonds is a cheater that used roids and noone likes him and sosa used a corked bat so he cheated too
this guy right here Roger Maris deserves to remain the home run champion. I mean Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire both took steroids which in my mind doesn't make them a good player at all. Well maybe they were good players but they were certainly not smart players. In my mind Roger Maris remains the home run champ.
With the steroid fiasco (hopefully) behind us, it's startling to imagine the way some purists of the era were complaining about Maris because the schedule (completely out of his hands) was expanded to the present 162 games vs. 154.
I don;t know who caught that ball, but I remember seeing a big black hand with a ball in it and then some guy jumped over the fence with the ball and ran into the old yankee bullpen. There was a lot of fighting over that ball, nobody caught it in the air, it was a hard low line drive and we were all fighting over it. I was only 12 years old and afraid to fight those big mem over it.
Sal Durante and Family claim Wall street Banker ARTURO MONTENORA and him have been doing business for over 10 years SAL DURANTE caught roger maris 61st home run ball, and Mr Montenora caught him as a Client. (AP).
Roger Maris is still the single season home run champion. He was also classy. Did you see how humble he was when he ran around the bases? The guy was a class act. Todays ballplayers are nothing but a bunch of cheaters on steroids. Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds etc are all a joke.
What I don't get is why they hated him during the regular season, but cheered when he broke 61. You'd think if they didn't want him to break it they would have chewed his ass out.
Have always loved Roger's short, lashing swing and its results:). I'll note here that whatever one feels about steroids vis-a-vis the record -- whether McGuire or Sosa took them during 1998, etc. -- Maris still holds the American League record for most homers in a single season:).
Yes, I agree, he's number 1 in my book too. I love to watch this footage and to hear the call by Phil Rizzuto, who's also the all-time number 1 in my book.
@jyosso Yep, as far as I'm concerned Maris is still the record holder with no asterisk. Put down McGwire's total with a '**" , Sosa's with a '***' and Bonds with a '****'.
Roger Maris is in all baseball minds still the single season HR king, without a doubt. Who believes that Sosa, or Bonds did it cleanly. We no with sureness McGwire didn't! Any baseball fan that still doesn't agree with that then it's in bad taste. Bonds owns the record for Single and All time HR's, with massive cheating agendas with roids and everything else. Maris family should be pissed and proud at the same time! The movie 61 should be re packed and sold again lol!
Roger is the legitimate single-season HR record holder in my opinion, but I still don't think he belongs in the Hall of Fame. He really only had maybe 7 or 8 good seasons, and he was only really dominant in one of them. It's true however that there are alot of Hall of Famers who deserve to be in even less than Maris.
@mrgoodcat8x56r - damn straight. I don't recognize those cheaters' (McGwire, Sosa, Bonds) records at all. Maris still has the record as far as I'm concerned.
It was against the Boston Red Sox, not the Baltimore Orioles.

It's sad that Roger Maris never knew the single season home run record belonged to him. He passed away 6 years before it was official.

Ruth may have played in less games but Maris had less At bat's than Ruth, which is a better gauge - Let his record not be tarnished!
