I likly danced to this in High school maybe the Ronnetts. and this is my least of Duffys songs. 1 and a 2 and 3-4 and repeat, put your hand on her waist young man, not her back.
For the record, it was originally done by The Drifters in '61...Another truly great recording of it was done by Lulu in '70, on her Melody Fair LP.
Interesting that so many in the press carelessly liken Duffy to Dusty, when it is actually Lulu whose style and sound she evokes more...with strains of Ronnie Spector....But ultimately, she has an unmistakeable sound of her very own....and what a thrill it is!
@DDreaming - Ronnie Spector ??? Although her sound changes, listen to Billie Davis sing Whatcha Gonna Do if you want to find a precursor to Duffy's sound.
Billie was wonderful, too...I just said "strains" of Ronnie...check out : Ronettes- Is This What I Get For Loving You sometime. Ronnie's voice rocked the airwaves in 1963, and there are few singers from that era who will deny taking notice.
DUFFY is a musical force unto herself...she is not an imitation of anyone, no matter who she may remind us of at times. Peace
I don't care what anyone says, Duffy's cover is the best version of this song. I can't wait to get my hands on the deluxe version of Rockferry so I can hear how it sounds on the album. So excited <3!
but why do they reproduce the wrong bass note that was on the Cryin shames record near the beginning? It's obviously wrong on the record yet they play it like this everytime. Huh?
Please Stay was a hit for the Drifters, but it was also covered by the Cryin' Shames in 1966. The Cryin' Shames version is the definitive one IMO and I notice Duffy sticks pretty close to their arrangement. If you haven't heard the Shames' version have a listen; the lead singer had a lisp but in no way does that retract from a wonderful song by a wonderful band.
will she release this as a B-Side? I really do hope so!!! I love all her songs even the welsh ones although I don't understand them the music is just Awesome!!
The next single will be Serious, released on 25th August ... but I agree this song would make a great single for Duffy and I can't wait to hear Bernard Butler's take on the production
I was well chuffed when she said she was singing 'Please Stay'... Duffy was so good live and the venue was absolutely classic. Leadmill is your typical dingey back-street club LOL I have seen school halls with a higher stage! I only managed to get the vid cos I was in the third row and I only got in the third row cos I was standing there for 2 hours before they came on LOL
this song was also sung by the Bay City Rollers back in the '70's
