I just stumbled upon this while looking up stuff to entertain a little one, but this is just beautiful. I might have to go digging for an audio file for this.
Ray sings the hell out of this one. He puts so much feeling in it, I guess that's what you call soul. The music along with Rays strong soulful vocals, does something to the heart. Do you recall when this song was played on the Cobsy Show, Rudy got upset because she could wear a certain dress to a party, This song did wonders for that episode. Just like the ending of the song turns positive, Rudy obey her Mom and the day was another happy Huxtable Family ending..Rest In Peace, Brother Ray, ..Love
Powerful song--No one sings this like Ray Charles. I searched from this song since 1993, calls to record stores, etc.--finally found it on Youtbue. Extraordinary reminder of how beautiful and powerful our indviduality is.
"It Ain't Easy Being Green" (that's how they wrote it) was recorded on Ray Charles' "Renaissance" Album. I have it on 33 LP, but maybe you can find it on CD through Ebay or Amazon. Good Luck!
I remember buying that out of print CD many years ago in Berkeley at Rasputin's, and while driving home, I put it on--I started to sing along to it and when he got to "tall like a tree", the key change and the wavering of Ray's voice got to me--tears started rolling down my cheeks. Such a beautiful version of this song--NO ONE sang it like Ray Charles, and no one ever will have his soulful touch. All these modern hip hop singers could learn a thing or two from him. RIP Ray.
Ray Charles + a classic Sesame Street song = pure magic!! Wow. Simply phenomenal. This, for me, ranks right up there with the original Kermit version of this song, and the version of Big Bird singing it at Jim Henson's memorial service. Beautiful.
I felt that same way. Ray does this song great just like Kermit does. You would cry more if you heard Big Bird sing it. I did when I saw Jim Henson's funeral on television.
hi dee, my mom told me long ago, that i said to her when I was a little kid," mom, I feel happy and sad at the same time". That's the human condition I think. At times of joy we suddenly can see a cloud beginning to pass over.
This song is so moving. It reminds me of that episode on The Cosby Show when Rudy listened to it in her room. As a child it made me cry when I saw her so sad and I still tear up when I hear it.
This is an absolutely stunning rendition of "Bein' Green", which elevates the song to masterpiece status. I also love how Ray not only makes the song truly is own, but also relates the lyrics to issues of race and racism.
Nothing more to say. I searched for words to describe my feelings, but you took the right out of my mouth, Frownland. Absolutely a masterpiece, I agree.
Without struggle in life, this song just wouldn't mean as much as it does. It makes your heart burst with joy and sadness. It's a beautiful thing when something can do that to you. Ray Charles was one of a kind and made this song his own.
Fantastic !!!!! I must say that the best version I have heard is Della Reese version....But this one is totally up there with the best covers of this song...Della seems to be talking about her blackness....but then so is Uncle Ray,too.
Green is beautiful and so is black ......and white too !!!!!
It's a shame that we don't have many, if any, kids shows today that address issues of diversity and the challanges of everyday life. Instead everyone wins an award, no one is challanged, and a moral and spiritual atrophy settels into the conscience of a new generation. Now more than ever good parents are needed.
i saw the last 10 seconds of that clip YEARS and YEARS ago, on the tribute to Jim Henson. It touched me then, at 10 years old, and still today at 28. Great music, I wish more stuff like this was produced today. The world would be a better place.
oh man! the monster chorus at the end was unexpectedly touching! i never realized as a child how sesame street was completely about embracing diversity, even when it wasn't talking about it explicitly.
That was the great part, that its embrace of diversity wasn't obvious - cause if it was, it probably would have come across as preachy. Instead, diversity among people and monsters is normal, as it should be.
Since I was a child growing up in America this song meant so much to me, yet I could not grasp WHY it touched me at such a young age. On the surface it seems depressing, but this song is an anthem of tolerance and acceptance. As an adult I find tremendous value in this song!!! peace
How ironic, and yet, so appropriate, that the great Ray Charles brings out his own vivid colors in this classic song. Thanks *so* much for posting. Now it's one of my favorites. Thank you Ray Charles, Jim Henson, and Muppet's.
mrmagoo123 thank you for posting this better version of the late Mr. Ray Charles singing a wonderful song. It's such an evocative song; all of us are green...do we have the courage to be 'all we can be' fully expressing who we are in a way that brings beauty to this world?
This version has always left me in tears. I loved the song as a kid, and when Joe Raposo passed away, they aired a tribute to him and they played this. I searched a while for this version , and I found it at a used CD shop. I popped the CD in my car player and found myself blubbering all the way home. Such a beautiful rendition, finely executed by the late great Mr. Charles.
So beautiful indeed. If this stunning combination of arrangement and performance doesn't move you at least a little bit, I feel very, very sorry for you....
A great rendition by Ray. Miss him. To truly listen to this song, not to just hear the words really makes one realize that trying to "fit in" is kinda silly. I accepted my "green". Makes things so much easier.
You know, I'm a Christian. And sometimes when I'm going through things I pray and ask God to speak to me. Often He answers me with songs about His love for me. But one day, after having poured out to Him about my being SO different. Not just because I follow Christ, but because of who I am in Him, He put this song in my spirit. I went to the piano and began to play and sing and it sounds funny but to this day, it reminds me of how He feels about me. That's awesome. He's awesome! Thanks
There are some 2 Billion + christians out there, I don't think you are any different there. It just seems a little but like a plug for your religion. I think regardless of religion this song does hit a very special place. *tear*
Bill Cosby use this song in one of his shows for Keshia Knight Pulliam who played Rudy Huxtable feeling down. I searched for Ray's version of this song, thinking it would probably be easy to find, I was wrong. It seems that Ray never recorded this for any of his albums! I searched through Jim Henson's library of songs with no success. Now, I know its out-of-print! Again, THANK YOU!
Sometimes when I get a little down with this world, a world in which we have more and more wonderful ways to say things, and fewer and fewer wonderful things to say, a song like this reminds me that giants, such as Ray & Jim, once walked among us, and it makes the day a little more bearable.
Love this!. I heard it played on an episode of the Cosby Show and made it my mission to find it. Unfortunately, the Ray Charles album this song is on hasn't been released on CD, but fortunately for me I'm not too picky and I bouught a copy of the LP online. A true classic.
i luv you ray!!! this is a definite tear jerker. such a beautiful song. teaches that don't be down on yourself for the things you can't change and embrace the beautiful qualities you've been blessed with.
I just want to state right now that this song means more to me than any other song that I have ever heard in my life! Having Spina Bifida, I really can relate to the message of this song & think that it is still of the utmost importance to teach children to accept people as they are & not define them by what music they listen to, TV shows they watch, who they choose to associate with, or anything else.
None of these things have crap to do with who you are as a person & it is about high time that we started teaching kids this again through songs like this one.
I love this damn song. I was watching the day this aired originally even though I was too old to be watching Sesame Street. But I knew that Brother Ray was gonna be on and my Daddy had raised all his girls to show proper respect for artists.
This is a deceptively simple song that is actually quite sophisticated melodically and the words are very poignant. I was a kid but I still got how special what I was watching was.
Thank you so much for posting! I've been checking YouTube regularly for this to show up! Now I'm just looking for the ever elusive "someone nice" sung by Ernie...

For those interested, the lyrics:
It's not that easy bein' green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or
yellow or gold-
or something much more colorful like that.
NicosNicosNicosNicos 3 years ago 7
It's not easy bein' green.
It seems you blend in with so many other
ordinary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water-
or stars in the sky.
But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important
like a mountain, or tall like a tree.
NicosNicosNicosNicos 3 years ago 7
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine,
it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.

This is such a gorgeous song. The big finish Ray Charles delivers towards the end still brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for posting this clip!

Thanks for adding this. I watched the 20th anneversary special so many times as a kid, and this song always made me cry and feel good at the same time. Its great to see it again.
