  • You're such a great teacher! I'm starting to practice drums and this is SO helpful!!

  • This was soo helpful. I've just picked up the drums, after years of other instruments, and was kind of intimidated by the idea of playing with ALL of my limbs haha. This has been very helpful, thanks.

    Btw, nice dog. xD

  • OK. I've been playing bass for 23 plus year, and finally decided to start learning drums. As a bassist I pay very close attention to drums have all sorts of different beats and rhythms stuck in my head. My problem is finding out how to get the appendages working like a drummers. So far, your vid is by far the best I've seen to start me on that road. Thanks a ton & forever in your debt . Mike aka Sonicfrog

  • great vid man! maybe you can give me some tips!

  • hehehe cute dog..

  • great!!!!

  • This is a very nice vid and a great way to get your feet wet. One comment would be that you need to learn the difference between a quarter note and an eith note.

  • well that wasn't bland at all

  • great teacher!..gracias!...

  • thanks a lot!!!

  • dude what sticks do you use?

  • Hey my man, I'm a blind guitarist, been looking for some good starter lessons for drums for a while, yours are the best out of dozens I have looked at, thanks much.

  • Your lessons aren't bad, but the rockbeat constant actually is with eights on the HiHat or cymbal and the snare on 2 and 4.

  • The count should be 1& 2& 3& 4& . He is probably using 1 2 3 4 for the beginners

  • hey now guys, there's not just one rock beat. You can do quarter notes, eighth notes, and many other variations. And think about this: At 120 BPM, quarter notes on the hi-hat with the snare on 3 is the exact same thing as eighth notes on the hi-hat and the snare on 2 and 4 at 60 BPM!

  • thank you very much! :D

  • cool lesson

and cute dog by the way

    :)

  • haaa niice

  • nice tutorial and patience =-P

  • this helps so much!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love ur kit......its a yamaha????

  • sure is!

    Yamaha DII Xtreme

  • Bland, Like Your Teaching Methods.

  • ya head movement helped alot

  • In all seriousness, it IS ALL about the quarter note...the pulse beat. Look at a metronome click as being in the center of a horizontal plane. As a drummer, there are 3 places that MUST be mastered. Playing

    1) directly ON the click

    2) on the back side of the click

    3) on the top side of the click

Bands, singers, and studio situations will want the drummer to play the groove in one of these 3 places. If you are trying to master drums, this post may be the BEST advice you will ever receive.

  • And a dog on bass perhaps? Great vid, thanks!

  • Thank you kind sir for the video.

  • very good...not too much stuff in one setting, told well...perfect for my kid..thanks

  • your cool dude nice you know alot of druming stuff

  • fucking awsome!

im a drummer and ur alot smarter and a hell of alot nicer then my teacher lol

also i love ur dog =P

  • i like your dog

  • Your very elaborite. You are smart to start teaching at rock beats. and 16ths. I took lessons for 3 years and learnd more with a 10 min video from you.. You make it easier cause you walk through it slowly.- Keep it up and youll change peoples parspectives on what souunds cool and what looks cool..

  • Fuck off, this is the best instructional drum video on youtube, say something constructive or just, as i said before, fuck off.

  • Great man thanks a lot I love the drums and this gave me a the ability to approach my new set.

  • Awesome. you should be a teacher. just having you spell it out so clearly made it so easy to follow. thanks

  • wow

  • excellent excellent job brother

  • Thanks To You ! i learn many things Thanks!

  • very helpful thank you

  • nice, u rock. i learned alot to start playing the drums.

  • Very good job!

  • excellent video i practiced each of your steps while watching great teacher carry on what your doing please

  • shud i buy an electric drumset or a normal one?? plz help

  • You can be a lot more musical on an acoustic kit, really understanding how to play the instrument.

Electric kits are fun, and the volume control (headphones) is nice if you have neighbors.

If "both" is an option, then I would say "Both".

Ultimately, it is up to you. What do you want to get out of it?

  • im a beginner and both is not an option but volume control wud be nice but its also not a need

  • well,if ur a new beginners,i think u shud try buying the electronic, because 1 electronic is a bit cheaper,2 the sound is well maintained because u could use headphones,3 it still having the same sound,n most of the electronic is durable,i suggest u try buying electronic before u switch 2 acoustic

  • ok for one REEVERBOT is retarded, electronic drumkits are in now way cheaper.

a decent acoustic begginer drumkit can range anywhere from $200 to $400, i'd strongly recommend an acoustic kit. from my own expirences an acoustic set lets you hear and feel what you're playing. yeah with an electric kit you can play with the different sounds and whatnot but if you are honestly serious about drumming then an acoustic kit would be my recommendation.

  • Nice dog :D

  • I've always wanted to pick up an instrument... thought maybe guitar, or drums... dunno. Really cool video though. It's tough to just say "Im getting drums today" since they are so damn expensive... and I live in an apartment.

Great video though. I'd love to see some more stuff of yours if I ever pick up a set.

  • Hey, you can get an electronic kit like he's using. They are no where near as loud as Acoustic kits. Plus you ca plug headphones in and then the only sound other people can hear is you hitting the pads, which isnt that loud.

Plus you could get a kit for around $1400 or so for a good one.

  • Maybe when I get a job. No way I can justify spending more than $600 on a drum kit for now. And I wanna go big-ish or stay home. In time, for sure. That sounds like its something just for me though.

  • my set was like $950 but u could buy a used set and just buy new drum heads maybe it'll be 600 or 700 ish

  • Very nice, clear, helpful basic instruction. Love that pup!!! Hope his name is Ostinato.

  • Great vid, helped me a lot. I'm learning to drum so this vid really was a big help. Thanks a lot and nice dog. lol

  • Great video, off to practice it now :)

  • i dont know why, but the video isnt loading until 2min for me, i really wanted to somment and rate but since i havent semm the full video i cant, nice introduction though

  • damn,5 stars

  • this is great! keep doing this!

  • Heh, it all has that clicking sound to it.

  • This is awesome esp for beginners!!!

Thanks for sharing some lessons and lease do more of this!!

  • its eighth notes note quarter notes.

  • oops i meant not instead of note

  • u sound good

  • Top shelf tutorial, thanks, i have already adjusted my trigger pad positions to snare with left hand.

Is there any down-sides to hat with left hand and snare with right?. Even though im right handed?

    Thanks again very well presented.

  • No downsides to any skill. It should be easier for you as a right handed person to play the constant on that hand.

  • Thanks again i never viewed it that way before, now i can stop struggling on the constant hat pattern with my left hand.

Excellent tuition thanks again, happy holidays :D

  • thanks buddy,

    this is of great help

  • tyvm =] im a noob drummer and i had to learn lol

  • thank u

  • Well done bro, this video was an excellent starting point for drumming. I've been drumming on both snare and african for several years but never really could get the hang of a set. Your video gave a great foundation for me to work with. Get to work on another one. Thanks

  • I am working hard to publish my method in the form of about 500 videos to supliment a book. It is a collection of exercises and music to work on basic and advanced drum set skills.

  • My son had his first lesson today and this clip is very helpful for him to practice the beats. He liked the part where your dogs wanders into the shot. Thanks!

  • great little lesson there.. gives u an idea of just how different things can sound within 8th notes! cheers

  • dude,ur my hero...hahhahaha....seriously your a great teacher...

  • I´m learning how to play drums but I´m 17 years old and, I know I started really late but I just love drums and after this video I think I love you too..jajaja, thanks a lot!

  • how much coffee did u drink before filming this? you look so hyper.

    but great lesson

    thanks

  • Yo, this video is sick... All those drum patterns that are in my head are starting to come out... Faster than I could ever think of.. Man.. Great job with this video. This is the first video I have ever watched someone playing live drums and explaining the concept of it. Has done wonders for me in just a few hours... Thank alot... For a first video thanks excellent...

  • cool, i'm kinda sorta playing from this!

  • Outstanding: You didn't miss a beat in your presentation - not easy over nine and a half minutes. You're a natual.

  • It's amazing. I've been "brain playing" for month, I wish I had the money to buy a kit! I'll be back when I have one ;)

  • this is good.

  • CUTE dog hahahah ^_^

and four on the floor dnt you mean the dog hahaha

  • i play the drums 2

  • What is being described as a quarter note is actually an 8th note.

  • If you count it 1,2,3,4 then it is a quarter note.

It is all relative. I generally teach my students quarter notes before 8th notes. (See 8th note placement video)

  • Your on the money with the 1 2 3 4 thing. Like you said, it's a "crash course" and you simplify it instead of getting into 1/8 notes etc. I teach and do the same thing and then get once they get the layered beats, I get into 1/8s to get them to play what would normally be 16th note syncopated stuff. This is good especially for the young kids..Nice job..

  • awesome instructions! thank you.

  • I've never played drums but I really want to start. I've been listening to music all my life and have been playing "air drums" for a while, and this is all way too simple for me. I think I need a set.

  • you've a really good teaching style. perfect. thanks alot man.

  • puro dada..aysus

  • Very cool and very rich Thanks I learned alot!

  • thx dude, this was no bad at all... an ur dog is damn funny ^^

  • man, unless that little variation is at like 200 bpm, I believe you are playing eighth notes on the hi-hat and your snare/bass strokes are the quarter notes, just food for thought on counting bud.
