It has less to do with color and more to do with one's ancestors' original location. But I still say got over it -- We are all American here; and We are all human. Treat people as you would want to be treated.
Maybe we should just realize that 'race' is no longer a scientific signifier, and that we all are of varying and different ethnicities, and just deal. WE are of the same DNA. Since our physicalities are so easily changed, we SHOULD 'ignore' it, just like we 'ignore' the colors of a person's hair.
goddammit brother, i am going to favorite this, you cleared everything up in one swoop, people (white people) throw that word around trying to make themselves the victims when their own government is racist and benefits them, people have to know the words they use.
(continued).... In fact, some might consider it insulting. It's like saying, "Look even someone like YOU can win an award." Or when Tiger Woods became the first black man to win the Masters. Like we were all under the impression that black men were genetically unable to excel at golf. Most people don't really see how significant it is unless you're stuck in the past. I really don't see how anything that Woods or Berry have done that's comparable to acheivements during the Civil Rights Era.
It IS insulting, yes. In the 2000's for us to celebrate ANYTHING done by black people in the US as a first is degrading; as if a) we never tried before or b)we couldn't, when in fact we were locked out.
As far as "the past" goes, I'm reminded of the following: The ONLY difference between "then" and "now" is that we think there IS a difference. Times change, behaviors don't.
An example of what I feel is a delusion of segregation: When Jackie Robinson became the first African American on a major league team, that was a big freakin' deal. It ended segregation in baseball. But people still make a big deal whenever someone becomes the first black person to do anything. When Halle Berry became the first black woman to win an Oscar, I was thinking, "So? It's not like black women haven't been allowed in movies until now."....
In America diversity is LAW. Most institutions will accept a minority over a caucasian if they feel the institution has gotten 'too white'; An attempt to avoid accusations of racism. Here in Georgia, UGA has admitted to lowering the admission requirements for ONLY African Americans in order to promote diversity. This doesn't sound like oppression to me. In fact, some may even call it racism against white people. So where is the inequality? I honestly don't see it.
Those are cases of PERCIEVED racism. When this happens everyone rolls their eyes even in cases where REAL racism occurs (like "the boy who cried wolf"). As far as lowering standards for Blacks, if they weren't given substandard, public MISeducation/indoctrination in the first place, it wouldn't be "necessary." Furthermore, what are these "standards" based on to begin with? For if they were biased then it may be a case of leveling the playing field, rather than standard-lowering.
Look I'm not trying to argue or bring you over to my side. You've got some good points and I respect that. But here's the thing: White people no longer have institutions that are 'white only'. They were ammended as an effort to combat segregation. However, 'black only' institutions are alive and well. So who's segregating?
Nah, man, this is a healthy debate. We're cool. Should we examine why they were 'white only' in the first place..? Black people HAD to have their own schools and businesses during segregation. The majority went belly-up after DEsegregation (not "integration" which was a myth), and most of those left are fronted by blacks, but run by whites (like the Boule, NAACP, VIBE Magazine, BET, black frats/soros and Black Enterprise).
Of course 'white only' institutions where racist. I don't think anyone would deny that. And 'black only' institutions were neccessary... at the time. I really don't see how they serve a positive function now. It mostly just makes white people feel left out and 'segregated'. Most white people today have never experienced a white only institution, so when they see things like the NAACP and BET... it often leaves them disheartned since there is nothing of their own to campare it to.
I would say that it would be best to have our own institutions --if for NO other reason-- to make sure we don't get locked out again. When it comes to whites being left out...in this society I highly doubt that.
(continued)... There was another instance where the company had begun cutting back on vaction periods and benefits. I heard a disgruntled employee comment, "Man, someone needs to call the NAACP or something. This is bullshit." I was dumbfounded. He actually assumed that the cutbacks were due to race even though all of us, white, black, and latino, were effected. He could only see racism. These are perfect examples of how racism had only existed in the minds of the perceived 'victim'.
(continued).... Racism and other abstract concepts aren't absolute; they're ideas. And when people argue over ideas that only really exist in our heads... well, then that's just a collosal waste of time.
Mentality impacts reality. When you can prove that all races have EQUAL acess to education, wealth, power, (natural and social)resources, opportunities AND the ability to express/practice their culture undisturbed (which some people call "freedom"), then we will "let it go." It seems to me, though, that only the blind or those who support or benefit from systemic racism claim it doesn't exist. THAT'S the colossal waste of time.
I see your point. But if anyone is being held back by a construct, it is the construct that is to blame, not an opinion that may or may not even exist. Example: An African American I used to work with was constantly being warned about losing his job. He insisted that it was racism. The only problem is, he never did any work. Despite constant warnings, he could not stay off his cell phone. And thus he was fired for it.....
Let's just let it go. Racism, or any derivitive of the word, isn't concrete. It can't be measured, weighed, or experienced in any physical sense. Thus it is abstract and only real to the person who perceives it as such. If a black man puts a gun in my face and says, "Die, cracka!" It isn't racism that's a threat. It isn't anger that's a threat. It's the gun and the bullet that's going to end my life....
Claud Anderson is a good writer. I have "Black Power-White Wealth" on the book shelf...alongside "The Miseducation of the Negro" by Carter G. W. ....let me stop naming all of these books b4 some1 calls me "racist"
My mistake, it's called "Black LABOR-White Wealth" & it's very insightful. Table of contents: 1. The Nature of the Problem. 2. Power & Black progress 3. Impediments 2 Empowerment & Economic Justice 4. Why Whites Chose 2 Enslave Blacks 5. Why Blacks Cannot Emulate Ethnic Immigrants 6. White Bridges 2 Wealth & Power 7. A National Public Policy on Black People 8. Becoming Politically & Economically Competitive in America 9. Cultural Foundations for Economic Power: Black Artists & Athletes.
I picked it up the other day from a local bookstore (paid CASH, of course...gotta stay off the grid, lol). Funny how Dr. Anderson also touched on feminism as a problem in the Black community as well.....
Interesting video. :) I'm feeling the very beginning. I agree on some of those points. But where did you get the definition for conservative though? I was confused.
What did you mean "yes and no" that black can be racist. Racism comes in any color. If it's wrong it's wrong. You know what I mean. Hate is hate.
You might want to watch again.According to the definition, you can only be racist if you are in a position of power and withholding something from another race. We as black people are not in power here so it's impossible according to the definition. When black people hate another race it is ethnic conflict as explained in the video. If we ran this gov't and chose to exclude whites, that would be racism but we don't run shit. I know this question wasn't directed toward me but I hope that helps.
You don't need to be in position of power to be racist. There are so many killers in Alabama through history who are POOR class but yet they are still racist.
Not a definition, per se, but more of a "code word" or euphemism. Kind of like when people say "urban" or "inner-city" they're referring to Black people.
As to where I got it, credit goes to Dr. Claud Anderson of The Harvest Institute (and the author of PowerNomics). His video by the same name is on Google Video in its entirety.
Like LLO525Star mentioned only people in power can be racist, Blacks can hate those around them or dislike them but we can never be racist. If I don't like white people it's because of the things they did to me and my ancestors. But if a white person don't like me, and anyone else whose Black, then their racist because I didn't wrong them in any way.
Lakishia thank you for responding. However, I must say that is the MOST RIDICULOUS conclusion I've ever heard. 2 wrongs don't make a right. How can we generalize or stereotype an entire race? That's like saying every black person will be a sniper shooter or any other black criminals.
I think the term "racist" is being used loosely and incorrectly. Let's ask our friend Webster the dictionary, which says " a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
If someone sees you as inferior because of your race it is that individual's fault. Ignore them and keep it rolling.
I know but to me I think white people get a "kick" out of treating people as if their less than them, they even do that to their own with how much wealth they have.
The overall point is that whites go out of their way to treat people like 'shit' and most of them can be cruel, except for the 3% who reallly aren't racist. Some may openly show that their racist, white others will give subtle clues.
To me Blacks in no way can be racist, we can judge and commit crimes towards white, but they...
..aren't mostly based on race, most crimes Blacks comitt are robbery and murders. They even target other Blacks (black-on-black crime) is that racist towards Blacks?
I do think so, but it was put there in their minds by whites who began the whole race-war in the first place. They basically created what the Webster dictionary depicts as the word 'racism' because they came to Africa and believe Blacks were inferior because they were simply darker than them.
I also want to note that whites are the main professionals at being racist!
I don't know your life, but on youtube I see THE MOST RACIST comments coming from whites on videos that have Black people in them, and guess what? The video wasn't even about race in the first place!
I also do see Blacks calling them 'crackers' back, but that's because whites come on the videos, for no reason at all, other than to call people 'niggers'. Blacks just return the same action back that's all.
Thanks alot for clarification of the terms we use everyday to define racism. This video is concise yet very informative, I appreciate you doing a video on such a topic.
