  • How can you say Altrinchams a suburb in Manchester ? Sale? X Bury? X

  • THANK YOU to whomever took this for posterity. So lucky to have seen this firsthand! .... The brother of a mate of mine saw JD in a barn in the countryside when they first started -- I always wished someone had captured that precious moment on video too.

  • hes the freakiest looking bugger! its hypnotic...like seeing an alien doing kareoke.

  • thank you for posting. what an energy!

  • Around this time Kiss and Led Zeppelin are selling out stadiums while the greatest band in the world is playing a small darkened pub in a suburb in England.

  • I so wish Ian was still with us...

  • this is awsome. i love joy division. i used to only appreciate metal. but in my old band we played joy division covers......it changed the way i will forever look at music.

i had to play drums which i thought was boring concidering how repetitive it is.....but jesus christ its more powerfull than anything

  • I wonder if those fuckers in the pub that night realised they were watching history?

  • @ianbrownshairdo Probably not...and I pity them (and I'm insanely jealous as well).

  • Ian Curtis -godly and immortal!

  • to ulmeyda08 dude no kidding...me too almost anything anyway

  • Thank you so much for sharing this outstanding live recording - what a treasure!!

  • Dear All go see transmission 3 they are a brilliant Joy Division Cover Band its the closest you will get to seeing them

  • Dear All go see transmission 111

  • I love how the bass is so high, letting Ian's voice essentially be the bass line.

  • I would give everything to see it.....!!!!

  • Isolation!

  • god bless you!

  • i've still never found better footage than the stuff from this show

  • good to see nothing changes.

  • I`m at Macclesfield tomorrow (may 18th) for the 30th anniversary, brilliant band and great lyrics.....

  • genex waste art-faggery don't fret 'bout bass fretts...nor guitar fer th' matter!

  • I can dance like him. Maybe because I have epilepsy too...

  • Imagine being there... IMAGINE BEING THERE !!!! This is astonishing.

  • The best live footage of Joy Division in my opinion, brilliant.

  • Cheers for the person who put this on!!! Great stuff

  • This is just epic!!!

  • Thank CHRIST Ian didn't sing like Jeff Buckley!

You people really have missed the point!

  • i have heard people say that you can tell if someone is good in bed by the way they dance, that being said, what does that tell you about this guy?

  • I got a kitten a few months ago and called it CURTIS after Ian!

Me & the mrs were on our way to see the kitten and were debating what to call it, then, in the car on the way there, I just decided to put on Joy Division and then when we parked the car, we randomly parked next to a van which said CURTIS on the side, so there u have it.

He's about 5 months old now and still awesome, just like his Namesake!!

    Long live Joy Division!

  • how apt that they were originally called the stiff kittens.

not a good omen for your pussy.

  • was this when they played at check in?

  • No, its the Bowdon Vale Club near Altrincham - you can tell by the wallpaper! And the audio is taken from the Bowdon Vale bootleg, as the 8mm film would have been silent.

  • dance ya bastard

  • I would have gave anything to have seen Joy Divison in my local boozer.

  • I Wish i could play guitar like Kurt Cobain, sing like Jeff Buckley and dance like Ian Curtis

  • Ian, got an idea I´ve been studying hipnosis...

  • Mindblowing! Ian forever!!!

  • ive known about this proformance (from here youtube) but where did this come from? is it on the "here are the young ,men" dvd? dam this is just brilliant!

  • Historic

  • this is surprisingly awesome quality despite being obviously extremely low key..amazing version

  • could your 'perception' get any more superficial?

  • @schmucklos ...thanks heaps!

  • The Joy Division sound is still fresh/unique/amazing after all these years...and no one can recreate it even though plenty musicians had tried to w/o luck!!

This music is a life saver!!

  • A 1978 video recording deserves a medal, especially one of Joy Division - well done that man

  • I fucking love this! Ian's dancing is fab.

  • Gênio!

  • mai nessuno come loro

  • li amo

  • Genius!!! sounds industrial.Good live.

  • Awesome. Anyone know how to get a full, HQ audio version of this performance of Shadowplay? (It was featured in the documentary "Joy Division")

  • I love him!!!Since I first listened to their songs(poems really....)they have become my fav band...music makes me shiver..lyrics touch me like nthg has ever b4...his voice brings tears in my eyes..pity he had to leave this world so young...RIP Ian...

  • @molkoula if feel the EXACT same way....brilliant lyrics and band. RIP Ian.x

  • planned to see them in the usa i guess

    it;s a solace

  • look the yann is dancing tecktonic huhu

  • Ups Ian*

  • ive lost control again

  • Good call

  • If I saw them live in a bar, I would stop drinking and think about life.

Shows you how bad life was in late seventies England that Joy Division could come about.

  • haha their singer is awsome, but he looks so awkward up their...like the way he moves...

  • What song is this, I always have the tune stuck in my head but when ever i look for it i can never find it.

  • 1.she's lost control 2.shadowplay

  • if you were an 18 year old kid in that pub, you'd be 48 this year...where are they now??? lol

  • i had loved joy division when j was 16 i stiil admire they

  • That was the Gecko's goolies!!! WOW. how long has this vid been posted? Why havent i come across it before? Thanks! RIP Ian.... Legend!

  • Thanks for posting, This is amazing footage!

  • they are the one band i wish i could've seen

    more than any other

    amazing.

  • I've always been a fan of Joy Divison and so glad I was there in Amsterdam Paradiso. (well we were always there If i am honest :) )

Great music and what a voice!

  • i love joy division, they are the best thing to happen to music ever! LONG LIVE JOY DIVISION! r.i.p ian

  • Historic Document!

  • imesely influential bassline

every modern electro or rave tune going now has elements of this

  • I bet you like them really dont you?

  • you're a real ray of sunshine, huh?

  • hey fishfuckmagician, you must really hate yourself. i dont know how you could possibly pull a statement like that out of your ass

  • i luv this fucking great band!!!!! i try to find the places they used to play at in manchestern but fail...

  • what a great fucking band..

  • Every once in a while I get into an argument with a music fan who just doesn't 'get' that rock and roll isn't all about the melody and chords. Guys like that look at this video, see Bernard playing one chord slowly moving up the fret, and declare:

    "Talentless and boring"

You cannot explain colour, mood, tempo, timber and groove to people like that. They will never get why the Ramones or Joy Division were brilliant.

  • AGREED

  • U'RE RIGHT!!!

  • well said

  • @leeraconteur ... for one ... the Ramones were never close to joy division ... and last of alll Joy Division are Evil !

  • @leeraconteur Gods, tell me about it. I still can't talk to my old "classic rock" bandmates about punk rock. Yet at the same time it's hard for me to put my finger on exactly WHAT makes the likes of Styx, Green Day,etc. utterly unbearable. Obviously to someone like me they are stupid pop bands, but what is it that truly makes it unbearable? Styx is pretty easy, but isn't Green Day allegedly a punk band? And yet I have no trouble listening to the tight pop of Big Star. Taste, eh? a mystery.

  • y wznt i alive wen joy division wer around :( kinda cool that i wz born on the 10th ann of his death - dats not cool tho

  • Man, i've been in thousands of pubs. Why wasn't i in that one that night? Eternal regret.

  • Pretty sure this is the Bowden Vale gig. Perhaps Joy Division's greatest ever rendering of the immortal Shadowplay?

  • Its like if i dont own a copy of Unknown pleasures, then fuck!? who am i as a person??? haha who am i?? :PP

  • they had such a good live sound.

  • PERFECT i love this

  • if there were a Heaven, Kurt and Ian would be best friends..

    Love Ian's signature spastics.

  • All I can say... Is thank you sooooo much for posting

  • Is this the Bowdon Vale Youth Club?..I know it says a pub in Altrincham but judging by the flock wallpaper it would appear to be footage from the youth club gig.

  • !!IAN CURTIS EL MAS GRANDE!!!

  • !!!IAN CURTIS ERES EL MAS GRANDE!!!

  • This is awesome!!! The only thing I can ever score is some homemade vids with STILL tracks attached. Ahh...Just like Preston, with all the intensity included! Thanks again

  • Thanks from me too, this is brilliant.

  • fuckin hell talk about hidden gems

  • This is really an amazing piece of footage ....this a prime example of the intensity Joy Division had on stage.

  • In 1985 i bought a JD live vhs it was the only thing available("here are the young men").The footage is of very poor quality,THIS however is a truly hidden jem.THANK YOU.

  • It's amazing how different their records are from their live performances. It's cool how they were so flexible with their producer, but also that their fans were so welcoming to the difference between their live stuff and their records. Can you imagine seeing these guys play at your corner pub? Wow.

  • They did, it cost a quid, the next year at another venue I think it cost 1.70 to get in.

  • This is brilliant, you see werkhed your problem must be you don't see all music as an expressive art its not the quality of the playing sometimes but more the quality of expression yeah the Beatles and Pink Flyod are good to some people but not to all people, to some people bands like einsturzende nebauten can be the beatles to some people so, before you rant about how bad a band is to you, you should listen to a wider variety of music to hear what's really good. joy division fans stay strong!

  • JD was entirely different beast when they played live. so raw and with great emotion put into their work.

  • don't listen to it then.

  • You clearly know nothing about art. Pink Floyd bores the living hell out of me. This is real emotional music that captures. Atmosphere is one of the most chilling songs I've ever heard. Art is something that captures emotions. That does this for the people who love it.

  • ok now i respect both pink floyd and the beatles but callin them talentless is rediculous. not only is this has to be the greatest punk group, they revoultionized music more than u would know. the lyrics of these songs are thought provocing and chilling and just the bands story alone is enought to become a fan

  • The only thing that is truly sad is your inability to appreciate art. To say you don't enjoy this music is one thing, but to write off "a million others from the beatles to pink floyd" and refer to them as a con is just pitiful really. Especially considering you went out of your way to watch the video and comment on it. Perhaps you're just jealous due to your own limitations.

  • I would love to beat u to death u stupid brainless cunt werkhead!!!!

  • JD...new order at its best....a kultur revolution....felt to this day and beyond.....

  • Ahhhhh i live in altrincham :)

    Which pub is this??

  • thanks Observer!

  • The earliest known example of Kylie's 'Can't get you out of my head' dance move, at 2:04

  • we're all observer readers now

  • intense, is that the old market taven then?

  • Nice. Another place I wish I'd been.

  • i tend to watch this every time i go online, fantastic footage,it just draws you in..

  • Such a great dark song. BTW excellent document, thanks for posting it!

  • joy division and the velvet underground the two most important bands in rock history!!!!!!!

  • mabe if you like only today's indie... and new bands are nowadays pure rip offs, just listen to arctic monkeys or franz ferdinand, clearly smiths and division rip offs.

  • nothing is orginal these days. everything is influenced by something. doesnt necessarily mean their rip offs. if you wanna be technical ian curtis ripped off david bowies mono toned vocals. dont get me wrong. jd is my favorite band. but your argument doesnt hold up.

  • amazing! thanks a lot!

  • Why when a young man with such intense genius end his life? Ian Kevin Curtis dead at 23.

  • good old english pubs

  • :))))))

  • omg wat amazing footage great performance

  • utter utter genius !

still pisses on anything served up since for intensity and raw emotion .Thank god footage like this is still out there so the legacy of joy division will never die.
