Great playing on C melody sax (I'm pretty sure). The great flute player and composer, Josie McDermott, was also supposed to have played sax back in mid-century.
A discussion of this vid on a trad music forum I lurk on reckoned that the sax can potentially drown out the other instruments, but coupling it with a banjo works.
If you look hard elsewhere on youtube you will find Seamus O'Donnell's uncle, Tony Howley also playing sax, accompanied by Tom Cussen on banjo, and a piano thrown in too.
Yes the sax does work. Anyone who hasn't heard it before in this context will believe it sounds foreign and may very well dismiss it instantly. The more open-minded, however, would feel excited about introducing a new sound to a session and all the new beautiful possibilities it may open up.

Beautiful playing. And what a delight to hear a trad saxophone.
Wondered why the audience were behind instead of in front of the musicians...

Nothing new about a sax playing trad. Many of the Ceili Bands had a sax in the line up back in the 1950s.

Enjoyed this combination, the Sax used to be not uncommon with scottish dance bands (when I was a kid... that's a little while ago)

A saxophone playing trad??? That can't be right. . . . .and yet. . ..it works a treat.
You'll excuse me now. I have to to tweak my expectations and expand my horizons a bit.
