My house never had an expansion tank it was built in 79' ....
I recently replaced the water heater and now have a sound like rushing water throughout the house. We have carefully checked the house for a leak, or something running, and can't find anything . Would an expansion tank stop the sound ?
Expansion tanks are not just for water heaters - and often have a higher pressure. You should differentiate that quite clearly. Likewise, replacing a tank is a pretty easy thing to do for Joe Homeowner if he takes a few minutes to research the job - and how to pre-charge a tank. Most tanks I've seen simply screw out.

My expansion tank in installed the other way around, as in facing up. Also there is and screw lid on the top, I assume to refill if needed?

Purge valve above the tank is to purge air out of the system. If you have overpressure or overtemp the T&P valve at the boiler will open.

What if the tank is installed on the cold side inlet ? One can only assume if the sound is different when tapping the tank ??
