I was considering installing magnets on the spokes and putting coil near the spokes, would this work, and if so, could it power maybe 4 leds? I am looking just for visibility of my bicycle, not light to see where I am going. I live in a city that is pretty much always well lit enough for me to see, I just worry about not being seen. I also worry about the resistance of a sidewall generator like yours. How much harder is it to pedal when you are generating electricity for your lights?
Did you add diodes to protect the LEDs from the reverse voltage? Considering the stepper motor outputs AC and LEDs can usually only handle 5 volts of reverse voltage, I'm thinking a power diode in series with each LED would be necessary?
very nice, I made a fan generator with a stepper motor, now i have transformers that step up the voltage a little and I can run 8 leds for basically free. It's soon to change though if I can get the microwave turntable motor good on it.
Thanks for this video, it's great, i just finish putting on my bicycle, but i have a question. how do u make it spring loaded? i got it on there but i think i need to change the robber and the spring loaded stuff ... help????
Is very interesting what you can do with a stepper motor, I did something similar, but not connected to the bike.
I used three capacitors in parallel to obtain 1600uF (1000uF 35V, 35V 500uF, 100uF 35V) (with both large capacity is better for us) and a 80K resistor (33K, 47K). After the capacitor is charged, is able to keep a led on up to 5 minutes (capacitor charge lasts a few seconds.) A diode must be conected between stepper motor and capacitor. Soon I'll do a tutorial.

Thanks for TALKING about your project instead of having some stupid illegal background music and no info at all. Nice job on the lights. I want to make some for an electric wheelchair (not using the chair batteries) and use the small wheels. It should work the same wouldn't it?
So far I've not blown any LEDs and I've had it going pretty fast. It's AC voltage so it's pulsed. If it was being converted to DC it might go over the current limit of an LED.
i have a q for u: what's the maximum output voltage of the stepper? did u have to reduce it like soldering a resistor before LED to make sure that is doesn't get too much voltage? above 5V will damage the LED. Please responde asap. Thanks.

I have laser printers and dot matrix printers ready for the scrap yard I've picked up at auctions and people have given to me, never thought to use the steppers for a generator even knowing a motor being turned becomes a generator. What make/model laser printer did you get a motor with a rubber pulley from? I had been saving select motors for a CNC project but I will now likely save all of them as long as they are good.
I have a 220 motor which I intend to use as the generator. I will use a rectifier but the voltage is still too low and I want to power my horn too. Any suggestions ?
What is the Power of the AC current produced like 40 watts etc. Okay so if i use a battery powered led will it not get fused ? Okay then is there something which can convert ac to dc. If then where can I buy one. I am living in India Bangalore , Karnataka .
Most likely not. You need a stepper motor. If it's a stepper, it will have 4 or 6 leads coming out of it. If it has 2 leads, it's a conventional DC motor.
you really need to make a tutorial on how to make this generator. I really would like to put this on my bike. This is pretty sweet man keep up the hard work!
@Arbator177 it's extremely simple, solder two wires to the motor (stepper motor taken out of printer might have wires attached already) solder other end of wires to an LED. On the side that you twist to generate electricity attach a small wheel (maybe an old toy car wheel) The wheel should rest against the bicycle tire and there you have it. Hope this helps.

hey if the motor was powerful enough.....you could hook up power to the motor and make a e-bike :D

You might want to think about inductive lighting. Less moving parts on top of the moving parts that are already on a bike.

does the stepper motor need some pcb board for this conversion?

@mikr0bas No, just connect directly to the motor leads.

@dinomaui how did you make that spring loaded thing?

@mikr0bas I just put it together out of scrap parts I had

Congratulations, you invented the dynamo!. Besides of that, it is a really good idea to use a stepper for that.

you should add capacitors for the led so you will have constant light at moderate speeds not varying intensities

Do a Google search on stepper motors, then read the wiki link.

@101AOK Yes it shound work. Try to find a small drive wheel so the motor spins faster. That way you'll have light at slower speeds. :)

It's just a rubber wheel glued to the drive gear on the motor.
