A thilling voice, reminds me of Cesar Vezzani, the Corsican singer who had that sense of explosions in his upper register. Will we hear tenors like this again- I doubt it... I suspect that this style of singing is not favored for recording, and thus the softer rounder vocal production is favored by teachers and students. Thank you.
Merli es una de las grandes voces del siglo pasado, pero no debe compararselo ni con Gigli ni con Lauri Volpi ya que es un tenor dramático. Si puede ser comparado con Pertile, Del Monaco, Vinay y quizás Martinelli.
You also have Giovanni Martinelli on this list but when I listen to Merli, especially in that ringing uppper register, I hear little miracles happening and I absolutely thrill to the sound of it. I just don't get that same excitement with Martinelli who had the same benefits of recording technology. To me Merli was a more refined Franco Corelli.
We are so happy that we can hear all these fantastic singers from the past en today. I admire this Merli, with his fine, high and sharp tenorvoice. But I like him most in recordings of rather unknown operaslike Lodoletta and Piccolo Marat.
Merli is a vastly underrated singer. I have listened to him with great pleasure for many years. Some view him as a provincial artist, but I've always loved his sound and approach.

To compare with Martinelli, Lauri-Volpi and Pertile, and even with Gigli and Bjorling..... Merli must have been exceedingly gifted. God bless you sir; your wonderful singing travels across the generations.
I LIKE HIS SINGING HERE ANYHOW AND PREFER HIM TO PERTILE in most cases and he sounds more dramatic. For a tenor he lived a long life! I don't hear any sound like the lyric bjorling, very different.
I can also imagine a different group of judges coming to a different conclusion. Merli's singing was noble and majestic..... more aristocratic than Gigli who largely sang for the masses and often resorted to smarmy effects in his singing. I have little doubt that if Merli were in his prime today that he would be widely considered the world's best tenor by far.

I don't know if he was one of the "100 Best Singers" on records, but he had a fine, brilliant spinto voice. He had a shudder in the tone which at times got a bit much. At his best, though, he was an authoritative, dramatic singer. His Otello duets with Muzio are surely great interpretations.
Merli is one of the great tenor voices on recording. He is not well appreciated today, eclipsed by the likes of Gigli, Martinelli, Lauri-Volpi, Pertile, and Bjorling. Merli's records deserve a re-examination, and he deserves a place on the list.
I agree, his voice does seem to combine the qualities of corelli and bjorling. It's shame that he doesnt have the recognition deserves. Less talented tenors are more celebrated.

Considering what is at the Metropolitan today, these artists shine like diamonds while the other is dross

If he's singing with Lucia Albanese he's going pretty good.

Geat voice. What is truely a pity is how he was treated by the fools at the Met. Sang only 1 season could you imagine.

I heard that Merli came second in the singing competition in which a young Gigli won first place. Imagine the quality in that competition!
