I think it's worth it. Recently I fried my CPU (too much over clocking) and now have an interim dual-core. I noticed quite a sizable difference in the overall performance of games. Plus that, you're good for future releases, Battlefield 3 for example.
Good news, Intel has been sued and fined for almost 2 billion dollars in the last 3 years for illegal acts of stealing technology and blocking the competition.

is a 6 core processor worth the extra money. i wll only use it for gaming

Gears of War runs on the highest setting on my 2006 AMD Opteron 2.4GHZ.
The trick was I have a SLI. A 2006 8800 GTX.
Good news is that newer games that take advantage of DX11 or OpenGL 3 is less dependent on CPUs and better utilize GPUs.

There are forces slowing down the adoption of advanced graphics technology... namely Intel.
Intel wants nothing more then to see AMD and Nvidia become so tiny in the market that they have no influence.

awesome dude , i just bought recently similar system based on the 6 core 1055T processor , and i also play Gears of War 1 .
I've got 4GB kingmax 1333mhz RAM and 9800GT video card.
I upgraded from dualcore e5200 intel wich started to suck.
